Wow, what an awesome, really fun race! I'll post a race report in the next few days, but the super-condensed version is that I'm happy with my race, I met most of my goals and had fun. The swim was tough today, everyone I spoke to said it was unusually hard this year. I missed my swim time goal, but I did catch up and pass some of the pro field, which was pretty cool.
My stretch goal time was 3 hours flat, I missed it by exactly how much I fell short of my swim goal, so I guess I had a good bike and run. My T1 time includes a half mile run from the swim exit to the bikes.
Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

What a day.  Up at 3:45 just cause I couldn't sleep.  Light breakfast and a short drive to the transition.  Coming over the bridge and Fly Like An Eagle was on the radio - got the chills and realized the race was on.  In transition a little bit before 5 am and the place was already packed.  Weather was forecasted to be in the low 90s, but because last week was unseasonably cold and westerly winds were in effect the rumor the day before was that it might be wetsuit legal.  The swim is in the Choptank - a tributary to the Chesapeake which is brackish and prone to all kinds of weird stuff.

At 5:45 am - the call was made and it was wetsuit legal.  I haven't done a wetsuit legal race since 2010 so I was a bit excited.  After a short run - maybe .75 mile, I squeezed into the suit.  With water temps at 75, I was glad to be in a short john.  Water was absolutely placid and we were off at 7:15.  I actually went out hard (for me) and found myself after about 10 mins feeling like I pushed it too hard.  I settled in and felt great until the last .25 mile.  Calf cramps started.  I flipped on my back twice and then just started kicking to work them out.  Out of the water in 37' - last year was 47'.  Hmmm, this could be a good one.

In T1, as I was stripping the wetsuit, both calfs seized up.  Worked through it and hit the bike.  Started with high cadence to find my legs and stretch a bit.  The Eagleman course is dead flat and prone to winds.  Last year, I averaged 20.5 and left it all on the bike.  In the week leading up to the race, I followed E.'s advice and hydrated heavily (lots of coconut water) and added more salt to the diet.  On the bike, was a 3hr perpeteum bottle, aero drink in the front with water and some gatorade on the back carriers.  The aero drink was huge as I drank constantly, finished the perpeteum and took salt tablets every 45 mins. No cramping at all for the rest of the day!

All in all, the bike felt fairly easy.  I averaged 21.3 mph, but could have gone faster.  However, I knew from last year that it all come down to the run. By the way, love the aero helmet - it is the only way to fly.

After seeing the family in T2, I hit the run and it was already about 88 degrees. I wanted to average 8:30 pace so I wanted to make sure that I didn't go out too hard. After a pee break in Mile 2, I settled in and just ran and (other than the aid stations) never walked.  Took ice at every station and put it down the front of my top and under my cap.  I ran with hydration on me which was a huge help as I could take fluid whenever I wanted.  There is not a lick of shade anywhere on the course and temps were about 90 for most the run.  I did see Crowie finish as I was leaving.

I went out at 8:33 pace and came back at 8:36.  HR never went above 160 which was great considering the heat.  Last year I ran/walked at 9:40 pace.

At 1.2 miles left, I could see the finish line and looked at my watch and saw that sub 5:15:00 was possible.  My stretch goal was 5:20:00 and I never imagined that I would be anywhere near 5:15:00.  I did the jumbled math in my mind and realized that If I ran sub 8:30 for the last mile I could hit the mark.

Final number was 5:14:02 73/270 in my AG. I went from 160 after the swim, to 106 on the bike to 73 on the run.

I am indebted to the kindness and support of the group and the sage wisdom of Ernesto and others.  And, for any of those MAF doubters out there, I took 25' mins off of last year's time.  I did train a lot more, but I was never injured and felt good the whole time.  The stuff will make you faster.

I have no races scheduled to my November marathon - which is probably a good thing.  Time to spend some quality time with the family and take things easier.

P.S. Ernesto: You couldn't find my name on the Ironman site because I have one of those jobs where I am not supposed be on any type of bulletin board with my full identity so the Petto is a bit of pseudonym.

Congrats to all the racers this weekend - You all did awesome!

@Chris - I get the screw it feelings - had them around mile 9 of my last half when I knew I wasn't going to meet my goal.  Mental aspect of racing is the toughest, and I still haven't figured that out.  Given your achilles issue you shouldn't beat yourself up.  You're a tough runner and will only be stronger.

@Ernesto - Awesome race in tough conditions.  Some of the pro football players were wearing DeSoto wetsuit (tops) during the playoffs last winter.  Sounds like a heck of a swim and bike.  Great run to finish the day!

@Andy - you ESCAPED from ALCATRAZ!!!  How many people can say that.  What a race!

@Joe - can't wait to read the race report (oops you posted as I typed) - as Chris said above, not surprised you destroyed your previous PR.  You have been an animal from a training perspective - you get out what you put in with regard to racing and training.  Great example to all of us!

Been out of touch, so Congrats to all racers!

I personally had a horrible training week.  Weather did not cooperate. Had to cut my bike short on wednesday after 15 min due to thunderstorm (so no point for me), and it basically continued to rain for the rest of the week. Couldn't do my swim on Friday, and Sunday was raining in the morning (family activities the rest of the day), so basically 3 rest days this week...and my next race is 7 days away.

I was able to run 4 miles on thursday and bike 12 miles on saturday

Rachel, great ride.  You will do great in your IM.

Now, can any of you tell me why BT won't find my swim workouts or some of my bike workouts on the new 910XT?  They load just fine to Garmin connect.

Very dehydrated this am when I ran with Scott.  Yesterday was 90degrees with 6% humidity and I did about 2 hours of racking leaves.  When Scott to our son out I stopped drinking fluids to get more done.  NOT WISE!  Track with Scott.... HR at a best of 147 and pace was 13:04.  Tomorrow another Master's practice and not sure of the training throughout the week since my race is on Sunday.  Just a Sprint that my goal is to finish.

Joe and Andy....storming great results!  Get some well deserved rest.

Ernesto, that sounds like a brutal day.  Reading your account was giving me flashbacks to IM Germany 2006.  I wouldn't wish that kind of day on anyone.  On the upside the next race will seem luxurious by comparison.

Had my first 1 mile OWS TT on Sat. and finished in 00:38’51”. Not exactly how I wanted it to go, but I finished!! I lost track of several of the buoys and went way off course. One of the lifeguards had to tell me where the next one was. For some reason the sun and poor sighting slowed me way down.

Sunday Ihad a brick workout and managed to get a 02:05’18” (35mi.) bike followed by a 00:42’02” run (4.1 mi.). Today is an off day and time well needed. Tried to keep in my MAF zone, but the heat (90Deg. F) made it very difficult.

I have to work on my sighting as well. I ended up doing a good number of breast strokes during my OWS on Saturday simply because when I did the crawl, I kept going way off course. So I would do some breast strokes, then crawl for a while, and so on. What I found funny was that when I was breast stroking, I wasn't really losing any ground with the swimmers around me.

Short swimming seesion for me this morning.  200y warmup, 1200y long swim, 100y cooldown.  It sucks getting out of bed to swim in the morning, but once I start going in the pool it's not too bad.  It's that whole waking up tihng that is tough.  35:09 overall.

Master's Swim this am.  Tough to get up at 4:30am but even worse for Scott who can never get totally back to sleep once my alarm goes off!  Feeling good about my swim and how I am coming along.  This week will be fairly easy with no big accomplishments.  Don't want to over train and be exhausted by race time Sunday.

Ok, now I consider myself a runner. Got my first blister (actually almost a week ago). Its on the top/side of my second toe (next to the nail). Its small and doesn't bother me at all (so no pain), and its not broken. Been running/cycling/swimming with it without a problem.

Questions is, how do I treat it? Since it's not painful, should I just let it be? or pop it? I have my race on Sunday, so leaning towards let it be at least until then, but wanted to hear the experts
