I've got a question for y'all.  I'm on a ski vacation this week.  Day 1 today, and my legs are FRIED!  My boys, particularly the older one, has just about caught his old man on the slopes and pushed me quite hard his afternoon.  So my question is this, should I do any S/B/R this week?  I just don't know if my legs would appreciate anything after the work I did today, and I'm planning on skiing probably every day, at least some.

There is a pool here, and my wife also wants me to do some snow shoeing with her.  Should I just take a cross training week and call it a day?  I have no races anywhere near the horizon.

Warren if it were me I would take advantage of the skiing and snow shoeing and just enjoy myself with my family. I don't think a week away from S/B/R is going to hurt you at all.

michgirlsk - 2013-02-25 2:31 PM I had a second session with the new PT.  Since it's only been two sessions, I don't really want to jump to any conclusions, but I do think I like his approach better.  Maybe it is a result of how the past sessions went and so he's trying something different from before, but he seems to be more about the whole body.  I have a lot of discrepencies with my structure (sigh!) and he was saying this and that could be relaying to problems with the hip.  For example, he watched me run on a treadmill for a mile today, and he noticed my left scapular area barely budged while moving.  Incidentally, that is also the side I have had issues with my shoulder with swimming a year or so ago, and I *think* the shoulder which I also slightly dislocated my shoulder a few years back (it popped out while I was playing rugby - don't laugh - but I popped it back in leaning over)... but he said it may or may not be related.  Anyway, the fact that he's looking at various functional issues I think I like, instead of just "stretching will fix everything" which I feel was basically how it was before!  (Okay, slight exaggeration maybe, but you get the point!)

Samantha that's good to hear and it sounds like you are making some progress with the new PT. I hope he can help you through some of the problems you've been dealing with and maybe you should layoff the rugby matches until you can get yourself healthy!

~sigh~

I know the man who was killed.  Straight stretch of road with the "typical" local shoulder on a busy stretch of 4-lane road for non-locals.  It was a local who veered off the road and killed him.

~sigh~

Like I said, living in a small town with a small group of avid runners and cyclists puts me at risk of knowing about all of the ugly stuff.

Please.....go hug your loved ones.

I would be getting very concerned about my own safety at this point. So sorry you have to go through this again and please take care during your own workouts .

x2 stay safe Tracy and good luck with this weekend's TT, hopefully you'll get the good weather you are hoping for.

Wow. I have a hard time being on the computer during the weekend and ya'll are ACTIVE!

Samantha, are you feeling better?  How's your PT going?

Warren, great article on the cadence, thanks for posting!

Jo, glad your son's deployment was canceled.  How are your sisters?

Tracy, sorry about the fatality.  Do they know what happened?  Also you had a GREAT ride, so you be careful too!

Jen, so sorry to her about your grandmother.  It is so tough to lose a loved one.

We are 5 weeks out until our TRI, so unless you are just using your typical 3 weeks hard 1 week not as hard, keep er gassed.

Bhargav, welcome back!

Tony, riding the trainer is much harder than riding on the road...to me anyway.  you are doing so good, you will be going uphill and thinking you are just coasting down hill.  You are gonna kick butt!  Congrats on a great winter cycling program.

Matt, congrats on the 10M race, great time reduction.  As far as looking back, it is just a tool to use.  Remember, how you feel, have you been sick, weather (heat, wind, rain, humidity) are all factors too and they change during the race.

Dina, so glad your puppy OK.  I bet you gave a lot of loving after that and gave him a warm cozy seat in front of the fireplace.

Dirk, great article on your history of starting triathlons.  That is what makes you a GREAT mentor...you have been there, had injuries and learned.  Thanks for sharing.

Jeff, the article in IronWar, I'm not sure if it is factual or not but they seemed to indicate that they trained long and hard with high intensity.  I am also reading "I'm Here to Win" by Chris McCormack and in 2002 he swam 720 miles, biked 18,275 miles and ran 2907 miles.  Broken out daily, that is 1.97 swim miles, 50 bike miles and 7.97 run miles.

Well we have been getting rain, rain and more rain.  I did get out and got a few runs in between showers but the humidity is HIGH and the  temp are about 70.  I'm also riding on the trainer (funny note, wife loves the trainer, she can ride and not worry about falling while clipping or unclipping and doesn't have to worry about cars).

Remember I missed 2 weeks of swiming due to work an sickness, well I can't seem to get the swim back.  I was swimming 800 - 1,000 yards non stop, well I'm back to like 200 non-stop and I'm sucking air!

I'm feeling good right now, no major injuries but ya'll know me by now, I'm not that smart, wife had to reign me in! I want to train more and harder, reading those books is NOT helping...lol  Give me a few weeks and I'll be hurting from something stupid I did.

Sorry this is so long.

Karl those books are good motivators and the Macca book was really good. I really enjoyed his book and his approach and ideas about triathlon. I know not everybody is a fan but I think Macca is a smart and very clever guy and you at least have to respect him.  Also with the swimming I find I have the same problems, long layoffs are not good. I think I am going to miss two weeks in March when they close the pool for maintenance. That'll probably set me back some unless I can find another pool and some time to swim at it.

Jo63 - 2013-02-25 7:08 AM Good morning Junkies: crazy past couple of weeks, hope everyone is doing great, I am going to have to go back a catch up! We got some great news yesterday, my sons deployment has been cancelled, he is not happy, he said he was prepared to go and was looking forward to doing this (as a mom I don't get it) but I understand! he had to put a semester of law school on hold so he is not sure what he will do until he can resume.... I on the other hand felt a sense of relief just go away, I can't explain it. I have been told all my life to put it in Go hands and he will take care of it, this is very hard to do but maybe this was my lesson to learn, and I am so grateful!! Have an amazing day everyone!

JoAnne good luck in trying to catch up with everything going on here. That seems like an impossible task. I'm glad to hear that you're son's deployment got cancelled even though he's not happy about it I can total understand your concern for him. I hope everything works out for him.

Well I was able to get some speed work done today in the form of a 10 mile race.  Overall I feel I did fairly well but did have a 2 mile section that I struggled through, for some reason I just cannot push through the tough sections of a race, and the unfortunate part is I'm not sure that is something you can learn or train to do!  But I am definitely going to try.  I also did this race last year and made a ton of improvement.  Similar to Dirk I love comparing performance from year to year, and even more so to compare the same races.  I think it really shows how far you have come: so with that in mind below is a comparison of last years race and this year.  One Item that strikes me is that even though I was  much faster this year, my overall Pacing was poor (at least compred to 2012).  I wonder if I had held a slower pace at the beginning would the end of the race been stronger.

Good Times!

I'm with Dirk...the pacing was REASONABLE at least.  I say this because of how well you held your pace in to the latter part of the race before falling off.  You just didn't know what pace was reasonable yet so now you know that something like 7:45 might be better.

Also, the amount of fall-off in pace was actually fairly small.  You probably have one of the more even splits out of the entire race field I'll bet.

Gotta agree with this.  That start may have been a tad quick, but you held the pace pretty much to the end.  A real drop off would be 1:00 or so, which I bet is typical for 10+ mile races. Incredible improvement.  As the guys are EN say, work works.  All you consistent work is clearly reaping benefits.

Hey you guys know me, it's never enough when it comes to my races! I always feel I should of done this or that and finished 10m faster! . But one thing this does is makes me wonder how quick I can do my HM in 2 months! Lots of time to get some endurance built up, an maybe even a little more speed! I'm thinking of targeting a 7:50 pace! I held that for 6 miles in October so I think it's doable.

At times I have considered doing this myself but I can never wrap my mind around spending that much time of the thing.  I seem to get a better work out when on the trainer because it's easier to have a focal point with out all of the stops, rollers and traffic.

Also much of the riding I do is on roads with much less traffic than many of you may be used too.  If a person is even remotely alert they can see me up to a half mile away in most cases.  I simply don't feel the danger that many people feel.  Of course there is always an idiot that's not paying attention or who simply doesn't care about anyone else, but no one can stop that person anyway.

Ugg, I just read this one.  So sorry for all the tragedy.  It's never ending out there.

I have also thought about doing more of my riding on the trainer or rollers.  Watching drivers while I run has given me pause though - between texting, talking on the phone, eating, putting the finishing touches on the morning face, etc., it's amazing how many people aren't paying attention.  I may do more, but I just really enjoy being outside riding.

I know that in the professional ranks, more and more triathletes are doing the majority of their rides on the trainer.

2 months is still a ways out, so keep plugging and at the pace you're improving you're gonna hammer that one.  Notice I didn't challenge you this year?  In fairness, I am planning a biking season, but I'm hoping to run a half in October/November at which I'll take on your spring race time!

That 10 miler plugged into the various time predictors says you're in the 1:44-1:44:20 pace.  That translates to 7:55-7:58 pace, so given you paced a bit fast  in the 10 miler, I'd say you could start at 7:50 and potentially hold it the entire race.  If it turns out that the 7:50 was too easy, you can really hammer the last 5k.  And if it's too aggressive, it won't be off by much so your drop off should be minimal.  But keep it under control at the start!

I think I am going to be doing the same this season. My weekday rides are probably going to be more on the trainer I think I can get a better workout there. The long rides though will probably all be outdoors. I need to ride as many hills as I can but I think I may stick with the trainer for the shorter stuff. It's just safer and I too find I can get a better workout without all the distractions.

I'm not a seasoned veteran in the cycling area yet. But, I have biked in rural South Georgia and through Los Angeles. I must admit that I did feel a little safer riding in Los Angeles, but I do get better rides with less interruptions in South Georgia. I just feel that people have less respect for cyclists out here. On more than one occasion I have the horn blared at me from truckers, dealt with rude guys in pick up trucks, had stuff thrown at me and I simply cannot get any closer to the white line. Furthermore, I have ridden along the designated cycling paths, which are not any more friendly for cyclists at all.

The Tri club I recently joined has another agenda as well.... they are going to work with the local officials to help develop better regulations and make the area more biker friendly.

Karl- You can still run in the rain.... but, not in this morning's rain. That thunderstorm and tornado watch was something else. I was actually in the gym when the weather guy on tv said that this morning was not the morning to head to the gym.... I was already at the gym and the guy on the treadmill next to me said we must be the only two crazy enough to go to the gym amidst the torrential downpour.

If this weather keeps up, I am not sure how much swimming I will be able to get in this week. Guess that means extra bike rides for me.

Don't be a slave to your training!  Have fun.

But with that said, if you can sneak out in the mornings for a couple of miles of easy jog, I think it would be a good thing.

But for the most part, this time is about the family.

I like that plan.  During that plan, the times when it suggests water running you will of course be doing bike or swim.

Just one thing I'd like to add to what he says...you actually may experience minor pain at the site of the stress fracture but it should be considered OK as long as it's minor, does not increase during the run, and is not worse later in the day or the following day.  Any worsening of any sort means you pull the plug on the run for the day.

Good luck!

RunningYogini - 2013-02-26 10:56 AM I'm going to try running today for the first time in 7.5 weeks!  Woo hoo!!!!!  Here is the plan I'm going to use.  Thoughts?

I like that plan.  During that plan, the times when it suggests water running you will of course be doing bike or swim.

Just one thing I'd like to add to what he says...you actually may experience minor pain at the site of the stress fracture but it should be considered OK as long as it's minor, does not increase during the run, and is not worse later in the day or the following day.  Any worsening of any sort means you pull the plug on the run for the day.

Good luck!

Thank you looking at it, Jeff!  I'll give a report this evening! Laughing

Tracy good luck with the run today, have fun and be safe.

WOW!  You guys have been seriously busy!  Obviously I haven't been around.  This weekend I spent 3 days ice climbing and hiking Mount Washington.  It was an awesome time!  I will read through everyone's posts tonight, but here are a few pictures to share my experience.
