I am still young( i think so any way,36) but the last check up i had was 3 years ago and was told I had high colestrol( family thing). It all depends on family history. If your family is prone to heart attacks then regular check up in that area. If you read the fine print i think every tri or HM will have asked you to consult a GP before regular exercising. Maybe even the HR montintor you wear tells you. I think as you get over 40-45 it shold be yearly. Skin cancer is big here as Mark said. Also prostate, make sure you see an asian doctor with a small hand ( Advice from out first man- prime minister boyfriend)sirgab - 2013-02-22 1:17 PM ... Question for the group, how often do you get medical checkups? ...
mmm... good question, definitively time to book in for a checkup. been a few years. |

If you are seeing your Doc for a PSA blood test you need to avoid cycling about 48 hours prior to the test. You should also avoid any bedroom extracurriculars for the same period of time. I started doing an annual PSA at 39ish to establish a baseline. Then every year you get it checked again and look for any significant increases. My Doc flipped last year because mine shot up a ton. We retested and it was fine. The culprit was cycling and extracurriculars...it was a really good morning that day.... I also agree with the comment above that my checkups are pretty worthless - that's why I'm considering get an EKG added to exam. Blood pressure good. I eat right so chlolesterol good. Lifestyle good. What's there to talk about? I guess the point is to do the tests in case something shows up. Edited by dangremond 2013-02-22 8:16 AM |

Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed On the medical exam issue, I generally get a full work up every two years - blood (fasting) and urine tests are a must. If you never had an EKG/ECG - get one! This is absolutely critical in my opinion for any endurance athlete. I also see a dermatologist annual to check my skin - especially with all of the sun exposure I get. Having colitis means that I get a colonoscopy about every two years and as a bonus I get a prostrate check for giggles - luckily he is a slight man. |

Marathon training has been a humbling experience for me. I know now that I have not done the proper training for the triathlons that I have done. I feel that I have done the proper training for the marathon. I am pulled and pushed forward by my awesome COACH, Ernesto who has been there for me since I first joined this group. He personally showed up at my first triathlon and took pictures. I knew then that he was someone special. So many of you have given me advice and encouragement that has kept me going. I have a small lump in my throat just thinking about it. Thank you all! I am both very excited and slightly apprehensive. The unknown always does that to me. This will be the biggest athletic event I've ever done in my life. At this time, the race day forecast at start time is 42 degrees and a very slight wind. Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed I really haven't had a checkup in a few years. i think the last time I did though everything seemed to be pretty normal for me. I not had high blood pressure nor really a family hx of it nor family hx of high cholesterol either. The only thing I really deal with is exercise induced asthma which I get a new inhaler for when I go in for being sick or something. But I'm 38 so I really should start thinking about getting checkups more regularly. |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed sirgab - 2013-02-21 8:17 PM My employer conducts yearly tests on all its employees, they even do the spirometer one (where I blow literally off the charts by 30%). It is incredibly important, especially PSA for men over 40. Prostate cancer is a disease that has a high survival rate if caught during the early stages, and cyclists are in a group that could be called "endangered".Great job Joe, good to see you are coming back strong! Jackie, do you have a bib# and is there a way to track you for your upcoming marathon? We are excited and totally rooting for you! Question for the group, how often do you get medical checkups? I had gotten one 4 years ago when I turned 40 and then neglected them assuming I was fine, until today. I had a few wake-up calls from friends in the last 2 weeks starting with a friend who I rode bike with, and was a couple years older, who died all of a sudden of a massive heart attack while working out at the velodrome two weeks ago. Then another friend was diagnosed with cancer also a couple of weeks ago. Finally another friend died two days ago also unexpectedly from complications with her pancreas. They all seemed to be in good shape, but I guess you never really know. So today I went for a thorough medical checkup and am waiting for the results, but was told my pulse and HR are doing great :-)
EKGs will reveal abnormalities that could cause a sudden cardiac arrest. This is particularly important for long endurance events such as marathons, IMs and halves. I encourage everybody in the group to get regular checkups, because most of us athletes confuse the words "fit" with "healthy". Usually they are closely related but not necesarily, I met very sick people that happens to be very fit too. Thirdly I will encourage you to read (or to re-read) out little bible by Dr. Maffettone. He talks extensively about this sick athletes and how food has almost everything to do with it. Never forget, we are what we eat! This country (sadly) is plagued with bad food choices and food-like products that are far from healthy, it is actually very hard to eat well if you eat out. Try to make good choices before going to the grocery store, if it doesn't make it to your shopping cart, it will not make it to your stomach.

Getting pounded by snow again and can barely bring myself to get on the treadmill again after getting outside for a few nice days. Might go out again once the roads are cleared. We'll see. I get my physicals yearly and have had the same complaint about them over the past several years. I have specifically asked about a EKG and or stress test because of our sport and the stories you hear about guys who thought they were healthy and then died during races or on training runs. My doctor seemed very reluctant to schedule the tests and has told me two years in a row now that I don't need to start PSA screenings yet. (I'm almost 43) Maybe time for a new doctor?

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed At 46 I do a yearly check up (full blood analysis and EKG), but as it has been mentioned, we can get rid of aging. Genetics here have a fundamental role not only on how long we live but on how "good" we live (some are prone to lesions, other are not....). Just eat healthy, exercise as much as you can, and enjoy life!

I spoke with my Doc about the EKG/Heart stuff last year. There was a separate test or evaluation I could do but was likely not covered by insurance, ran about $300 and my reading of the material was that it wouldn't likely tell me too much. if you've been reading Slowtwitch and Dam Empfield's series on swim related deaths in Triathlons he is a big advocate of EKGs, stress tests, etc. I am starting to believe it is worth the money to pay for the tests if I have to to be sure I am not at risk. In 2009 I ran past each of the 3 people who died in the Detroit Half and Full Marathons. Seeing them on the ground in various stages of distress left an indelible impression on me. I'm a big believer in when its your time its your time, but not sure I want to avoid possible changes to my lifestyle to delay that time as much as possible. On the PSA front there's a lot of debate on the necessity of annual PSAs. The numbers can jump around for quite a few reasons and then you getinto the whole, "Well, your PSA is elevated so now we need to do X." I guess better safe than sorry, but who wants to deal with overdiagnosis eiher? Edited by dangremond 2013-02-22 12:47 PM |

However, my good choleresterol (HDL) is really high and my bad one (LDL) is within reason, so we will see what the doc has to say.
