Subject: Nutrition Question

1 1/2 hours before my ride this morning I had 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon and an English muffin with butter and jam and coffee.  I was discussing this with one of the guys after the ride who said he ate too much.  He mentioned that my breakfast was an awful lot of protein.  Just before the ride I experimented with a GU Roctane island nectar (yuk) and during the ride I had two Cliff shot bloks.  I felt fine, other than it was a hard workout, especially after running and swimming yesterday.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the nutrition aspect as far as improving or hampering my performance?

Today, I had a 52 mile smashfest in 2:51'26" with some tough teammates going really hard into the wind. Feels good to be getting back in shape! My legs are BURNING but I'm so happy.Laughing I purposedly avoided drafting (only went on the front or alone for periods) to make the training more race specific.

Barry 18 days 14:49'35"

Scott 16 days, 11:09'25"

Jennie 16 days, 7:25'38"

I guess I'm gonna have to crank up the training if I want to stand a chance in this challenge, huh? Nobody seems to want to quit, and I love it! I have the best!

Jennie and I ran a 5k with our 7 year old daughter this morning.  It was an interesting race in the sense that we had to predict our time and the winner was the one to have their actual time closest to their predicted time.  So there were no watches, no heart rate monitors, no ipods, no mile markers, and no race clock.  At the beginning of the race, they started the clock counting down, and when your predicted time came up, you started.  So theoretically, if everyone predicted their time accurately, then everyone would finish together when the clock hit zero.  Rheona ran a 40:24 and Jennie ran a 31:33, but Jennie stopped to walk with Rheona for the last 3/4 of a mile at the end of the race.  I ran a 20:17 which wasn't too bad considering it was the first race for Jennie or I since May, the last few months have been nothing but slow, aerobic running, and it was our first race here since moving from sea level to high altitude in Colorado.

If this http://athlinks.com/result/154818/224569/70681495/93927287is our Scott, then, yes, he is fast. 40:32 10k.

Scott, you should sign up at Athlinks and claim your races. They are all up there for nosy people like me to look up anyway.
Ernesto, me and Mitch are members and have friended each other.

Chris, yep that's me.  I'll have to check out that site and claim some races.  I wasn't too happy with that 40:32 either, but to put it in perspective my 5k PR is 18:14 and my 10 PR is 37:35.  So any 5k over 20:00 and any 10k over 40:00 is a disappointment.  After reading the big yellow book on MAF, I've been running below my MAF now since the beginning of August, so today is the first time I've used any fast twitch muscle fibers since May.  Plus I did the usual thing of starting too fast as well.  After over 20 years of running, I still start too fast when I don't race much.  I think with a few more races coming up and pacing myself my times will come back down.  Jennie and I will start strength/speedwork in about 5 weeks, so I expect that will make a difference.  We'll likely start doing some strength/speed building Spinervals workouts too, which will be good because I'm crap on the bike and I find hard training on the bike helps my running.  When I set my 10k PR a few years ago, I was in the middle of training for an IM.

I found myself on athlinks.com com and claimed a bunch of results.  It took awhile to claim 50 race results, but I'm in there now.  There's a 10k from 2010 I can't find and a half IM from 2006 I can't find, but everything else seems to be there.  Jennie registered on the site too.

Scott, congrats on your great time on the 5K, and even better your impressive 5K and 10K PR's! Also congrats Ernesto on an awesome bike ride today and Mitch on getting your new toy, you are all set for the winter with your new treadmill! On my side, I will be starting my training for Ironman Texas on Monday, but am worried on how well will I be able to balance training with all of the Holiday party's during the next six weeks :-)

Gabe,

Being worried about Ironman Texas is not good. It is still too far for you to call it "Ironman training". Specific IM training starts no sooner than 20 weeks, if you start putting mega miles now you will be extremely burned out by race day. January 1st is a great time to start, and it's right after all the holiday madness.

Also, if you don't mind sharing, show me the plan that you'll be following (if you have one).

I would rather call this period base training, you can still keep the frequency high (like now) and do more speed. But forget the mega volume now, there's no doubt you will finish the race, so take that worry out of your mind. Let's talk some more, if you give me your number I'll give you a call and I'll explain it to you in detail.

Gabe,
I agree with Ernesto.  At this point you just need to be geting in shape enough to handle week 1 of your training plan.  The training plan will get you the mega miles in due time.

Ernesto,

Thanks for your concern and your valuable advice, we might have to actually rename a movie to "Ernest saves Gabe's Christmas" Wink

The plan I was looking at is from Endurance Nation and I got it from a group of triathletes from Guatemala that I recently found out will also be doing the IM Texas (and all of them have done IM's before).  I will send you a copy of the plan so that you can take a look at it and give me your feedback!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

The weekend is over in my part of the world and I put in decent workouts the last 2 days. Yesterday was a 3hr mountain ride, lots of steep ascents, today 15k run with the club really kicked my butt. It is hot here, somewhere around 30c even in the morning.

The rest of the Sunday was spent at the kite festival with the family. Here is a picture of couple of big kites:

Oh, my numbers have improved: 20 days (26h : 54'). Yeah.

If it's an EN plan I don't need to see it, those guys are great coaches, extremely good at the Ironman distance.

Nice and chilly trail run for me this morning (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/129910020).  9.59 miles in 1:30:04 with an avg HR of 146.  I think the 5k yesterday woke up some fast twitch muscles because it seemed like I could run the downhills a hair faster than usual today.  My legs felt a bit heavy at the beginning but it wasn't too bad.  Jennie is out doing her long run now while I watch the kids.

I second Scott's statement about the trail being chilly.  The sun was no help today.  Today was a bit tough.  The cold weather hurts my lungs a bit.  It took awhile to feel like I could breathe easy.  Heart rate was high.  I tried to stay slow and a few hills I walked too keep the rate down.  I am still using the aerobic heart rate zone I got when I did a threshold test on the bike.  Still trying to get strong with all these hills.

Now for a hot shower to try to thaw out!
