Went to the LRS and ordered a pair of Saucony Hurricanes 14. Stability shoe. I liked it as its lighter than my current Asics Kayanos , fits well, and , has a toe-to-heel drop of only 8 mm. Didn't have my size (tried 12, need a 12.5), so I ordered it and once in the store will compare to the Brooks Adrenaline and make a final decision, but I felt the Saucony fitted better.

The other benefit is that with an 8 mm drop, its a good first step towards a more "minimalistic" shoe, which is something I am looking to try. Also tried the Brooks Pure Cadence, and I love the way they fit, but thought that moving to something like that might be premature (4 mm drop), considering my age/weight and the fact that my calves are tight as it is. Might wait a couple of months and include them in my rotation for the short runs.

Question regarding laces. On my last race (wet and rainy), my laces kept coming undone, so I am thinking of buying "Yanks" type laces. Any recommendations? Do you use a lace/lock combo or just a lock device on your regular laces? Have heard some people have issues with elastic laces.

My running shoes are Zoot OVWA, so they come with elastic laces and stoppers built in, I really like them. I just bought a pair of AVIA trail shoes (for next winter), that come with their version of Yanks laces are not elastic, but they hold well and tighten easily. A couple of my kids started using Yanks on their basketball shoes a couple of years ago. One stuck with them the other didn't  (I guess she learned to tie her shoes), but as far as durable, they seem to hold up well enough.

As far as your blister I would leave it alone and let it heal itself. If it pops use liquid band-aid when you run, it will protect the spot and won't fall off.

Question for you Garmin users: What do you do with all your log files to review them - do you upload your files to garmin connect, Training Peaks, BT, leave on computer and use Training Centre, other?

I currently use a mixture of all but its a pain to keep uploading to all differetn locations. Thanks, Mark.

I'm neurotic -

  • I upload to Garmin Connect because it just happens when I link my watch with ANT+ to my computer.
  • I then go to BT and upload so that my training logs are up to date.  I use the equipment tracker here as well for my shoes.
  • I also use Sporttracks on my computer (not online) due to the enhanced functionality and some of the plugins you can add on to the main program.  I try to import my garmin files here regularly.
  • Finally, due to the social aspect, I started using Strava.com so that my Bro-In-law (and anyone else who may not be on BT) and me can share our workouts with each other.  These files are updated less frequently.
  • I also have an Athlinks account so that I can track and share all my race workouts with my friends (some of us in this mentor group share race results - happy to link to others as well)

Same routine after every workout.

1) connect.garmin.com Upload workout. Do a quick edit to change the title and maybe write a note. Leave window open and copy url.

2) beginnertriathlete.com Upload workout. Edit it to paste the url I copied from Garmin connect and put in what equipment I used.

Doesn't take that long.

I use elastic laces.  Have been using them for about a year and never had any problems with them.  They're great for a quick transition in races, and I never have a problem with overtightening my shoes.

With your blister - if it's not causing any problems I'd just leave well alone...

I do this as well, except that first I upload to Garmin training centre on my computer.  I was using that before I started using Garmin Connect, so I have everything on there as well.

Regarding blisters (and I know I'm in the minority here), I'm firmly in the camp of drain but leave the skin. In my experience, if you don't drain it keeps widening.

@Mark - same as Chris, Garmin Connect + BT

@Sammy - I now only use lock laces on all my running shoes http://www.trisports.com/locklaces1.html

@Jackie - had same problems uploading to BT w/ swim files.  This is fixed by going to "Training Log" and then uploading files by pressing the "upload" right side on the "jump to" section.  From there you select the Garmin 910XT and List Activities.  Then choose to add all new activities which you haven't uploaded yet.

In response to our "Polar Ernesto's" question as to why we do endurance sports, I concur with everyone's responses and would add the following:
-to meet great people like you guys!
- I now moderate my partying a lot more and think twice about what I eat and drink.  However the savings I expected from not partying as much are not happening as I spend all the money in gels, power bars, etc...
- To stop living in the past; my claim to fame used to be the "Death Ride" race I did when I was 27 (16 yrs ago, imagine) while living in CA.  I can now focus on what I will be doing now and the future (more Ironmans - yeah baby Wink)
- Like Jim mentioned, a cheaper mid-life crisis, but really more than that, a mid-life awakening, especially since I will be a dad again in about a month and I want to remain healthy and provide a good example for my kids!

What about you E, what are your reasons for doing Endurance Sports, and even better, for been so kind to us with your time and knowledge?

Finally, here is a short video that I got from the transitions at my recent IMTX in case anyone wants to watch:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8LKMArO9Jc&feature=g-upl

@Mark - same as Chris, Garmin Connect + BT

@Sammy - I use Yankz and like them now that I've figured out how to really lace them up.

@Gabe - thanks.  I did a search and saw I wasn't the only one with the upload problem.  Video was great, but in person was so much better!

@Andy - how'd you like that Madone 5.5?

I found my Saucony Fast Twitch 5s on sale at footlocker.com.  They are on the way now!

Rest day today.  I was trying to save them because I think I'm going to have a forced rest day with work this week, but I was tired today.

Got my race report up!  I'm at a campground just outside Yosemite with spotting internet service, no cell phone signal, but it's beautiful up here!  Heading into the park tomorrow for a few days, hoping to get in some trail runs. No training today, just a bit sore from yesterday's race, my calfs are killing me.  When I've got more time I'll get around to updating all my totals for the month.

Updating for Sunday's race.  My calf is still so sore/cramped that the only thing I could do would be the bike (but I'm not pushing it).

Had a 2 hour drainer workout today. It was actually very challenging and I wanted to puke afterwards, but felt good to do another speed/endurance workout even though the weather was great outside.

What about you E, what are your reasons for doing Endurance Sports, and even better, for been so kind to us with your time and knowledge?

(Taken from Steve Prefontaine's quotes) You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where I started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement.

About passing it on, I believe in good karma and I'm a social individual so I try to pay it forward. A bit of a frustrated teacher too I guess...
