I'm with you guys on all the distracted drivers... I was driving to work this morning and some girl was driving and texting, swerving all over the road... almost made me spill my bowl of cereal... ha!  jk

Seriously though, I feel way more comfortable in a group.  But as my workouts get more specific, it's going to make it harder for me to go w/ groups...

I RAN!!!!  I RAN!!!!

And I iced when I got home and did nothing for the rest of the night.

It feels fine right now.  No worse than before.  My ankle is sore, though.  Thank goodness I've been doing strength training and riding my bike a bunch.

Warren,  There's no doubt you're getting some intense leg workouts while skiing.  I am with Jeff though, if you can get something in early than I would try something short.  I even thought a decent swim would do your legs some good to rest too.

Karl, Texting and driving wasn't something I saw when I was a fire fighter but distracted driving for other reasons was certainly around during that time.  I saw a lot of things with women putting on their make up, reading a book or the newspaper and people eating while driving.  Pulling up on a vehicle accident and seeing an opened newspaper between the driver and the steering wheel made for some interesting comments on a incident scene.

Jonathan, Those pics are, again, stunning!  I still wonder why I have to live in the flat lands.  With all of my extended family being born and raised in the foothills of the Appalachians I always seem to have a longing desire to be there, or someplace like that.  Mountains seem to bring my senses alive when I have the opportunity to visit them.

Tracy,  Seeing you've been able to get a run in makes me smile.  I know that has to be a tremendous feeling to finally get your running shoes on after so long.  Congratulations!

Will,  I suggest you invite your friends out for some intensity rides sometime.  Make sure everyone knows the route and that this specific ride will NOT be a "no drop" ride.  The hard part of a ride like this would be actually being able to stay focused and get the targeted workout complete without turning it into a competition/race.  But even if it happened to turn into a race there would be significant benefits to that as well.  That said, the trainer seems to provide the best possible focus for me to actually hit the targets of an intense work out.

Jonathan congrats on reaching the summit and thanks for posting the pictures. What else can I say that has not already been said by everyone. I hope you enjoyed the challenge of getting to the top.

Tracy congrats on getting your first run completed in almost 8 weeks. I'm so happy to hear that you did not have any issues and hopefully you'll continue to make progress.

Great, great news.  Was it great while you were out there?

This is a critical time for your recovery.  Stay the course and don't submarine all your patience by getting ahead of the plan.  Keep us up to date.

Well, 2 1/2 days of skiing and my legs are FRIED.  I am planning no skiing today but I'll try to get a run and swim in, just because.  I did a really short swim in the outdoor heated pool last evening, but today I'm planning to go to the lap pool.  The swimming motion felt great.

My oldest is really pushing me on the slopes now.  Back in the day, I did some fairly extreme skiing.  In fact, the end of my season was always a hike up and then skiing down the mountain Jonathan went ice climbing - at Tuckerman's Ravine.  I thought those days were long gone, but Z had us in the double black woods trails dodging trees and rocks yesterday afternoon.  I thought my legs were in ok shape, but I guess skiing uses a little different muscles than SBR!

Had a tooth filling today and the right side of my face was numb for about 4 hours... tried to swim and it was a lot more challenging than I thought it would be... ha!

On another note, my calf muscles were sore form the get go during my run yesterday but I decided to run anyway (9 miles).  They were sore thoughout the run and were shredded at the end.  In fact, it's usually my quads that are sore after workouts, my calves have never been that sore.  I got in the ice pool at the gym and could barely walk last night... They're still pretty sore today.  So, I'm looking for advice... is it okay to push them like this?

I'm no expert, and I always trend toward being cautious, but the fact that it's your calves - I'd be careful with that. I think I told a story last week about how I did some water jogging in a shallow swimming pool while we were on vacation last summer. My calves balled up into tight knots and got so sore from that. I ended up battling some achilles pain for a while after that trip.

What are they sore from? A specific workout or general training build up?

Seeing your pics on FB makes it look like a pretty wonderful time but one that Mamma may not have appreciated nearly as much as you and Zach.  I would love to learn to ski but it make a little difficult when the longest slope I could use is on a highway over pass.

I would take a day away from running and try to figure out what type of activity caused your calves to act up like that.  Do you experience this normally on a smaller scale after running and added mileage allowed caused this to happen?  Did you run hills more than usual on this particular run?

Last thing, since you have been riding hard on Jorge's plan and there's the possibility you're toeing down during your pedal stroke.  If this is the case, or you think you might be, make sure you keep your feet a little more flat while riding and allow your hips and legs to power your pedals.  Try not to use your lower legs.  Maybe use a higher cadence, if your used to a low 80's cadence, to drive the pedals.  A Higher cadence may help you drive with your legs and not your toes because higher cadences make more muscles fire more quickly.  When this happens your body will have a natural tendency to become more efficient.  BUT, you have to learn the proper pedaling techniques and not rely on cadence all of the time or you'll fall back to what's comfortable during big work rides.

It seems you and your family have the worst possible luck with illness.  Sorry you have to go through all of these things, seemingly on a routine.

I miss snowboarding and cruising through tree lined powder filled slopes. Skiing and snowboarding require your muscles to work very differently and I can feel the burn as you tryped that statement above. Sounds like some truly awesome family time to me!

Jonathan- Thanks for sharing the pics and congrats on the amazing hike/climb!

Why were your calves sore already when you began your run?

If you can't pinpoint anything then I would be very careful.  You seem to be describing a situation where the muscles got worse while running.  That's not how typical muscle soreness works, so that's another cautionary sign.

HAHAHAHahahahahhahaha.... I could see this.... between the numbness and the feeling of pressure I could totally see you attempting to breath and hacking on water! Hope those calves start to feel better.

My best guess is that my calves were sore from Jorges workout the day before my long run (like Dirk said).  I've never done interval training, so maybe that's contributing.  I've never had much calf soreness in the past, so I'm wondering if it's bad to keep working them or if I need to give them a rest.  The same thing happened last week (just a little more severe this week).  I gave the legs the day off yesterday (did a swim only) and plan on a short easy run today...

Question for those of you that are or have done Jorge's:  How much swim and run did you do during the program?  Thanks!

Will right now I am ramping up while still doing the program. I'm trying to swim 3x a week and run 3 to 4 times a week while still doing the 4 workouts in Jorges's plan. I'm a little sore as well to be honest and tired. My biggest challenge is trying to find the time to get the workouts in and getting a good night's sleep. My runs aren't very long right now and neither are the swim sessions trying to keep them to an hour or less. Same with Jorge's workouts with the exception of the long weekend ride. I'm in week 13 now.

On a positive side note I did get my treadmill today and will put it together this evening and give it a go. Hopefully I will not be cursing too much during the assembly. It's been raining on and off here the last two days so this will be perfect plus this will be a huge help in getting some more runs in and not having to worry about the weather or not having enough time to get outdoors to run.

So, I am in week 2 of Jorge's plan.. watch out! I am doing 3 of his workouts per week, well really just 2 and then I do a long, easy ride that is based on how I feel really. I am also trying to run - 3x and swim 3x a week, I will be upping the running to more frequent runs in March.  Even when I have been pounding the bike sessions before (last season) I cannot recall experiencing the sort of calf pain you are describing.

From your description, it sounds like you have tore your calf muscles up pretty good. I would definitely give them a few days to recover. Look at me- giving advice when I am the last person who should give any... don't listen to me...

I did the main 3 interval workouts of Jorge's plan last winter.  I ran 6 days, but all at easy pace, during the same time.  I think you can handle some intense bike intervals with frequent running, as long the runs aren't also intense and aren't overly long (I topped at 1:45 during the Jorge plan).

Got in a great snow shoe last night.  We went out for a group hike for 2 hours, covered 3.8 miles and 1450 feet of elevation (a GPS nerd was with us).  He's going to send me the data at some point, along with some pictures if they come out.

Great question, Will.  I did as much running as I could handle after putting my legs through the stress of the program.  My idea was to get faster at biking that winter and to not let anything else get in the way of that.  I'm pretty sure I could have run more, but I got a lot of quality workouts in because I didn't push it on the running.  This year I want to work more on the running and get stronger legs.  That's not exactly happening because of my hiking, but they sort of help one another out.

I would not push it too hard on the runs when you start out sore and get worse like Jeff said.  You never know how long you will take to fully recover from those kinds of workouts.

By the way...you have an ice bath at your gym?!  That's so awesome.
