Os after having a relatively decent day, I got home and received a call from my dad--apparently, he visited his doctor as he has been having some energy issues--just getting really tired really easily. Mind you, my father is 74 and obese--he has type 2 diabetes, but other than that, he is actually kinda healthy--BP is awesome in fact--and always has been! Anyway, the dr said that he has an irregular heart beat and that he CANNOT exercise (no worries there, as my dad isn't too active), AND he MUST lose weight! In any case, my dad is scared, so he is actually going to watch what he eats (this has always been his MO--eats whatever until he has a health scare, then does as instructed and gets better quick--then goes right back to old ways...)but the fact that he is so scared has got me worried too--I offered him all info I have on paleo diet, as that will most likely help him--and he is actually interested, so that's something...

Please, pod, keep my dad in your thoughts/prayers/etc. as I told him, he's got to be here in May to see me finally graduate! (yes, that is what I told him)

There is a lot of info on Type 2 diabetes, blood sugar, and cholesterol improvement using a plant based diet.   I highly recommend Engine 2 Diet or any plant based diet for people who have diabetic issues on top of everything.  Not to be scary but out of all you said, Type 2 Diabetes is the scariest and could be the root of the heartbeat issues.

Keeping him in my prayers.   Hopefully, he will make some lifestyle changes.

I missed the "what is your job" thread that seemed to be going on here so I'll just respond here seeing I am giving advice.  I am first and foremost an RN.  I manage cancer research, mainly in radiation, at a large university hospital.  I have several other letters after my RN, however they are just frosting.  As I explained to my husband, when we were at a wedding with a woman who had a brain tumor, when I miss a deadline, people die.   There is NO stress to my job whatsoever.

I wholly agree with following a lifestyle similar to that recommended in the Engine 2 Diet.

There is a BBQ restaurant here that has t-shirts that say "I worked to hard to get to the top of the food chain to be a vegetarian". Ha!

Soooooo, just to bump us back up and to get some chatter in here I will tell you about how brain-dead I was at swimming this morning...

First, I was doing a 400 swim in my warm up and lost count, which I don't usually do but wasn't huge. Then in the main set I was supposed to do 4 sets of 150 with 20 seconds rest. So I take off on the first one and start counting 1 of 1, 2 of 1 etc. Well my brain at 5:30AM somehow decided that 150 yards is 6 laps!!! So after 6 of 1 I take my 20 second break then start of with 1 of 2, 2 of 2, then it occurs to me, "Hey Dummy?", "Yeah?", 150 is 3 LAPS! D'oh! So my first two 150's became a 300.

After those I had 4 X 150 pull, which I managed to count correctly. BUT... before my last 150 and 100 c/d someone who was waiting for a lane asked me how much further I had to go (for the record I share whenever someone asks) and I told her 350!? Surprised

I AM good at math... really!

On a side note, I tried using a nose plug. Hated it but I think I can get used to it for Oceanside. Maybe that was my problem, lack of oxygen. Yeah, that's the ticket!

At squad when they make me take the lead I hate it coz I can't count especially in the 25m pool  Sets of 200 well how often we do extra (I rarely undercount!)  I get into the zone with swimming and im writing shopping lists in my head etc!

Quiet on here today.

Ha ha, I never know for sure whether I did the right workout as I can get lost even on 100s! When in doubt I always add extra distance. If I were any good at this swimming stuff I'd be able to know exactly where I was in the workout based on time. But that'll never happen

Same - I'm a strong swimmer, I'm a pretty confident swimmer especially in the pool - but I am not fast.  I'd love to change that!

If you get lost easily, count the 50's (for a 25 yard / meter pool) and count backwards... so if you have to do a 200... you have to do "4".. push off the wall, that is 4 "to go."  When you get to 1, it's "last 1"

That helps me get through long sets, and it keeps me on track.  Also, at the flip (after 25 yards.. I repeat the # I'm on) and will say it in my head a couple times on the way down the pool.

So, my laps are 4,4, 3,3, and so on.  This has worked for me on 500's even, because I always can't wait until I get to 3...because when I hit 3.. I say to myself "I can do 3 of anything"... On 1000's or greater... I start at 20, and do a little celebration when I hit "single digits"... then another celebration at 3.

Hope that helps.

Counting 101!  I don't know how my coach and the endurance swimmers cope with their 10km sets of 1km.  I just couldn't do it!

I am really impressed with the diverse group that we have in the pod. Everything including Vet techs, zookeepers, truck driving salesmen, professors, law enforcement, IT, designers, armed forces and health care, yep we are quite a cross section of the world. I love that we have people from all walks of life and all parts of the world. I'll probably be throwing out some more non-training types of questions over the next few weeks. For me, life is about the relationships that we develop as we go along, and this is just one more opportunity for me to meet people, embrace the differences and grow as a human. So, I thank you all for indulging me.

"Don't let the scars in life define you, they are there to help you develop." Have a great day everyone!

BTW, I have my Yanti watching set for Friday. I will be taking a late lunch to see the start. I haven't been able to find it streaming anywhere yet, but I'm gonna hunt for it tonight when I get home. If it isn't streaming, I'll be stalking watching her bib # and seeing where she is on the course.

I'm not sure if this is BT legal or not, but if any IT types are looking to relocate to beautiful, sunny Florida:

Feb went waaaay to fast... especially when I have my first half marathon coming up.  I'm not really scared about not finishing but I have a feeling it will be a crap time unless I can finally shed this chest cold.

Asalzwed - 2013-02-28 11:49 AM Holy sheet, last day of February! Are you kidding me!?!?!

I know, huh?  We have half a day to get in nine pages of conversation!

I'm doing a 5k bright and early this freezy Sunday morning.  I'm shooting for a PR on this one.  It'll also act as a baseline for 5ks for the rest of the year.

Which thing makes me wonder if I really want to play soccer this Saturday night....

That race is coming up pretty quick, isn't it?  What will be your longest run before the race?

Me as well.  I have it on my calendar by my computer so I can remember to switch over and follow it.

IronTrac doesn't have the NZ athletes loaded yetSurprised Once they do I'll be using that and the computer to track our girl.
