Of course you have, it's easy being the girl. My mom is always like "awwww, she's so cute..."

Yeah, parents always love me. That doesn't stop me from being nervous about meeting them, though.

Well, you don't meet a cute solar physicist every day, you know.

Yes, well, that has worked against me before. My last ex's mom liked me in general, but I think she was threatened by the education thing. Oh well, that relationship wasn't going to last, anyway.

See, this is another double standard thing I do not understand. Maybe its because I'm a short male, and short males are discriminated against in this culture in some ways much like women are in general, but...

> A well-educated woman is a great catch! Who cares if she has more education than the guy? Its not a contest.

> A well-educated woman that makes more $$$ than her guy - or makes more $$$ period, regardless of education - why do so many guys see that as a threat? I think its a great thing.

I guess I'm just terminally weird.

My wife, of 11 years, has been making more $$$ than me for at least the last 6-7 years.  I've never, ever even thought of it.  Doesn't bother me a bit.  Why would it? Same account.

What if you had separate accounts?

My wife makes significantly more than me.  Never really thought about it in terms of being emasculating or whatever.  I don't much give a fig.

And we have separate accounts.  Hold-over from when I was a contractor and concerns over taxes and such.

There's a story in the NY Times today about that very issue:  successful, well-educated women dating men who make less money.  In all of the examples in the story, it doesn't work out.  But to me it seemed the women wre complaining that they liked to go to nice restaurants but doesn't want to pay all the time, that kind of thing.  One woman accustomed to flying business- or first-class was not happy with a trip that the boyfriend planned involving a less convenient flight itinerary, to save money.  That kind of thing.

Then the other issue was the lack of ambition or drive that some of the men seemed to have.

So in a weird way the article actually made me optimistic.  When I had money, I spent a lot of it on other people, and on charity.  Didn't drop a lot in fancy restaurants or keeping up with designer clothes.  I like camping, which is cheap!    While I DO share the concerns about ambition, I think I'm being honest with myself in thinking it's the heart a person has for their work, not the amount money they make from it, that matters to me.

Anne - thanks for the compliment.

Celeste brings up an interesting point. Ambition - what's important to a woman/man.

From my perspective, its not so much money driven, but are you interested in improving yourself - what you can - and learning not necessarily to overcome your weaknesses but to compensate for them?

Something that sort of piqued my interest in this... The Blonde wants to learn ballroom dancing and wants me to learn with her. I'm game, why not? It is exercise, can be fun and it will improve my run balance, I think. But I've heard other women complain that there's 'stuff they want to do' - whether it be ballroom dance, go on a special vacation, or simply do something that expresses more interest in a relationship - and I wonder if that can construed as a lack of ambition. Because I do think you can become complacent in a relationship by losing your 'ambition' in *having* a relationship.

(remember, I'm the 2x divorced guy - as I've said, I'm good finding relationships, not staying in 'em long-term, so this grasshopper is eager to learn what you think).

x2.

I love relationships, romantic or platonic, that keep me on my toes and encourage me to try new things, step outside my comfort zone, etc.

And to all the guys who've piped up to say that you don't have any problems with your wife/girlfriend making more money: you rock.

Farro soup with sausage, mushrooms, and escarole. With some crusty bread on the side. Perfect for the cold snap we had over the last several days.

Whatever you got.  Just a well rounded dinner in general.  If you only got one component I can improvise the rest.

Thanks!

I can't wait for our cold snap... maybe December or ...urr... January.

The wife just did a great Beef Bourgenon (sp?) the other week.  Got it out of Barefoot Contessa's French cookbook.  Was awesome.

I don't do the cooking, I do the baking, so if you ever need help on the pastry side of things, I'm your man.

Afternoon, TAN!

My thoughts on today's topics (at least some of them):

1) My asthma has been really bad lately, too.  Maybe it's because of the season changing and the different pollen in the air.

2) I love XKCD!  Not so much for meeting parents.

3) Mmm....beer.  I'm a big fan of stouts, but right now it's pumpkin beer season.  The Harvest Moon beer, not so good even if you like Blue Moon.
