Did Muncie as my first HIM today. It was an awesome race, but that run course was brutal! Maybe not for others, but there are no hills in South GA to run on, so I was unprepared. I had a horrible swim, a good bike, and a decent run and came in at 5:48:41. It was my first HIM, so with nothing to compare it to, I am happy with my time. Congrats to all that finished the race today!

Wow - nice times for the Muncie crowd!  Here's my MOP result.

5:53:53 for me.

38minute swim

19.6 bike avg

2:18ish on the run

Was a bit dehydrated going into the run without realizing it.  Humidity was lower so really didn't sweat a whole lot on the bike.  Walked the aid stations and took on consistent water and ice.  Powerbar gel every 3 miles and got stronger as the run progressed.

Although my goal was 5:30 I classify this as a successful failure as I was able to somewhat recover from some dehydration issues.  This could prove invaluable for me at IMKY

Great job folks!!!

Buddy of mine did Muncie, and will be doing louisville, with bronchitis in 5:13, he's a beast. ..... Adam

Great results guys, congrats!

I was a little disappointed with my results at Muncie.  My goal was to break 6 hours and that just didn't happen.  Decent swim (37:12), Excellent (for me) bike (19 MPH), Bad, bad run (2:26:49).  Overall 6:08:53.  Boo.  This was my 4th 1/2 and my worst run split of the 4.

My Halfway run time was 1:04:04.  I fell apart about mile 9.  I'm not exactly sure what went wrong, but I have never felt so bad at the end of a race ~ ever.  I was miserable.  I was plenty hydrated, I hit my nutrition spot on on the bike.  I was just so hot and sick to my stomach.  I felt worse when I finished yesterday than I did after my IMFL finish last year.  The nausea was intense and lasted well into the night.  Today, I feel like I've been hit by a bus.

Oh well, I will take it as a learning opportunity for LOU.  I know some things that I'm gonna have to fix.  I've got my 4th half under my belt now, more experience.  And, I'm really, really happy about that bike split!!

A couple days off for me and then back at the grind  Excellent job, guys ~ some fabulous results, especially for you first timers ~ nice!!

Muncie was great! I posted a 5:41:28 finish, which was a PR by 7 minutes for me at this distance.

It looks like everyone else did a great job and learned a lot, too! Congrats to all the finishers!

I was hoping to meet more of you in Muncie. I was proudly rocking my BT tri top during the race.

That was you? I almost said hi but didn't want you to think I was weird. I finished in 5:48:41, so you probably saw me on the bike course, I was riding the hot pink bike.

Jillian,

We're all weird!!!!!!! You should have said hi. One person did say hi and we quickly exchanged screen names in T1, but I can't remember his name. Congrats to you on a great race.

No plans made yet...so where to stay, where to eat, where to get a good deal on gear, and where not to be? Any answers will be worth the read.

Was out in the Muncie heat with the rest of you - First HIM - 5:30:05 - need to sharpen my math skills up as I slowed down at the end b/c I thought no way I could make it in below 5:30.  Oh well - got to enjoy the final half mile and saw my wife which was well worth it!

Think I was same as everbody and enjoyed what I thought was a perfect weather day on the bike and mid way thru the run it felt like someone turned the oven on.  Managed to walk aid station and run inbetween!

Congrats to everyone!

Good lesson to turn it down a notch for IMKY.  While it was hot in Muncie....Sunday's report from Jess doing the course training ride in Louisville was 98 degrees - the car said 102 when they left to go home

Hey Everybody,

Got done with my 3rd HIM for the season, Muncie was unbelievable fast! Broke 6 hrs for the first time ever. PR by 33 mins (5:56:21), 45:21 min swim, 2:55:43 Bike, 2:09:57 Run. I have never come close to breaking 3 hrs on the bike befor (I LOVE TAILWIND)! Triple T is the one thing that got me through that run course. Great event overall!

Have to switch from race mode to survival mode!

Congrats to everyone and I’ll see you in 48 days!

Pretty tough swim at the Grand Haven Oly tri yesterday--felt like we were surfing more than swimming towards the end.  Big rolling, two-foot waves left a lot of people feeing seasick after exiting the water, too.  Everyone had slower times, and the sighting was very, very difficult, mostly because of the large swells but also because the terminal swim buoy was pretty small and difficult to see.  Lots of folks were blown too far into the shore by the SW wind and had to hang a left to get back out there.  Sooo glad IM Louisville is on flat water!  I lreally ove Lake Michigan, but technique, etc. fall apart pretty dramatically.

My results are unremarkable compared to you folks, but I've really been concentrating on running strong off the bike and felt just great, doing 8:15 miles for the 10K, which is quite something for an old guy.  At Grand Haven, too, there's about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile run with your gear from the swim exit T1, so the running starts early in the race.  I did have the fastest T1 time in my age group, woo-hoo!

I have three syllables for any of you who struggle with heat/cramps/hydration:  Endurolytes (by Hammer).  I've been taking two of them every two hours in the heat, and I've never felt better or even close to cramping or dehydration.  Again, just my two cents.

Louisville's getting much closer ... cue dramatic music here ....

I did the Sourdough Non-Branded 70.3 race in Fairbanks on Saturday. What a gorgeous day we had.  Temps reached 78 or so by the end of the run.

Swim went great.  I may have gone out a bit too fast--27:59

Bike went OK with a slight issue--2:58:15.  This race is very small and laid back (Translation:not a lot of aid stations).  At mile 38 I was out of fluids and was wanting something to sip on.  I was sweating a fair amount and was thinking ahead to the run.  So at the last bike aid station at mile 45, I grabbed a 20 oz. bottle of water and finished it in 30 minutes just before I finished the bike portion.  This caused a bit of a problem on my run

Run went bad, but a good learning experience--2:16:46.  I was planning on 2:00.  Right when I started the run, i felt a side stitch and I attributed it to downing 20 ounces of water so quickly.  I tried everything to get rid of the ache but with no luck.  I was pacing 9 minute miles and my legs felt good, but my right side was killing me. At around mile 3 I started contracting my core muscles in hopes of getting rid of the side stitch.  Well....the side stitch went away, but I caught a terrible cramp in the middle of my back from the contracting of my core muscles Laughing.  I can laugh now, but I was in pain on Saturday.  I couldn't get a deep breathe from that point on and did more walking than I ever imagined.  The last 5 miles took over an hour.  Silly me.

I learned not to drink too much at the end of the bike, and to not try to combat side stitches with quick bursts of core flexing. Who do i think I am?  Mike the Situation?

Congrats to everyone on a successful 70.3 weekend.

Saturday I got to spend the day at a soccer tournament watching my oldest play. First time I wasn't the coach and it was nice. Just sat there and cheered instead of sweating it out. The real plus was the two hour break between games so I managed to get a 14.5 mile run in.

Sunday was the start of scout camp and we had to be there by 1:00. That meant getting on the bike wicked early for the planned 5 hour ride and 45 min run brick. I planned to start on the trainer and then move out to the roads. At 8 I switched over to the Tour de France and the next thing I know I plodded out the whole 5 hour ride on the trainer and 45 min run on the treadmill. To be honest it wasn't as bad as it sounds since I had something good to watch on TV.

quesy & Joe-

The airport in Louisville is pretty close to the race venue, but not walking distance.  There are many hotels in the area, but you need to start looking if you don't have something yet. Google Jeffersonville, IN as a possible location to stay if you don't find what you want in Louisville. Jeffersonville is right across the river. Good luck.
