After struggling through my workouts all week, at 39 degrees this was the best ride I've had in a while. I attacked the uphills and coasted down. Felt good.

Also, thinking of buying this saddle - http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_174722
Hoping it will be more comfortable (it has a cutout).

My worry is that replacing it will screw up my bike fit. I don't want to spend another $100 on a bike fit because I got a new saddle.

I barely made the quota today, had to run very late (just finished) and just for a very short period (4 miles in 30'21"). Also, today Ironman Arizona is taking place, that was my first IM race two years ago and four of my peeps are doing it. Chris, if you are by a chance thinking of losing your Iron virginity next year, tomorrow at 12PM Mountain time be super ready, this is by far the most popular race in the Ironman world, sells out in six minutes or less. Also be ready to cough up $650 or so.

WORTH EVERY PENNY IF YOU ASK ME.

If your problem is numbness, that saddle will not help too much, you need a noseless one like the ISM Adamo or Cobb Vflow.

Nope. Current plan is Wisconsin 2013 (September). Next year is a 70.3.

Wisconsin (Ironmoo) is a tough Ironman, but you will be more than ready.

Great weekend.  Two bike rides and a swim.  Getting ready for the Austin Turkey Trot, a 5-miler.  I'm so glad it's not summer or winter here.

Chris, I switched to the ISM Adamo because I had severe saddle issues with the front of my pelvis.  I really like it.  I realize it's a female perspective, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Ernesto,

My IM history is full of drama and race day struggles.

IM Germany 2006:  DNF due to near hypothermia.  Non-wetsuit swim in sub-70 deg water followed by horrendous thrunderstorm on the bike.

IM Arizona 2007:  Finished!  Yeah!

IM Florida 2007:  DNF due to "intestinal issues" that started right out of the water.  Had to hit every toilet stop on the bike and run until dropping out at mile 14 of the run due to massive dehydration.

IM France 2008:  DNF due to lack of training because of work.  Made it to mile 5 on the run.

I completed two half IMs in 2006 and another one in 2009.  2006-2007 were good for tris because I could train.  During 2007 until this past summer, training was a constant struggle due to traveling for work 2 to 4 weeks out of every month.  Now that I'm in Colorado with Jennie and I don't have to travel for work, I'm looking forward to getting back into steady training.  Jennie and I have the following plan for 2012:

Cooper River Bridge Run 10k - late March
IM 70.3 Boulder - early August
Denver Rock and Roll Half Marathon - late September

I'm sure we'll do other races for tune ups and we'll likely look for some triathlons to do during the summer to get ready for the half IM in August.  If 2012 goes well, we'll look at a possible IM during the summer of 2013.  Due to my job, I can only get time off during the summer so we'll be looking at an IM in June or July.

Went for an OWS today! Swam 1500m out and back in a lake nearby and really enjoyed it. The water temp was 28c or so.

Next week off to Colombia via LA to spend time with my wife's family, Long haul... So Wednesday 30th - no workout, just 15hr flight, which is harder for me than running a marathon, but I guess, no points for that here... While in Bogota I will be just running in the park (at 8000 feet above sea level) 3x/wk as usual. But at the moment I am enjoying the pole position:

Today, I did a very easy four miler in 36'05" on the treadmill at the Hotel in Austin, where I'm working for a couple of days. My legs are incredibly swallen (thighs and bad cankles) from the bike on Saturday, but this is common when I go hard. I just need to flush it all now.

Scott,

Sorry to hear about all the mishaps in your Ironman races, that is certainly the distance that throws the most punches at you. I can't imagine the disappointment of DNFs, I never had one (luckily) but I wouldn't hesitate to drop out of a race if I feel my health is threatened or I simply cannot put one foot in front of the other.

One thing that you should take advantage of is the place where you live at now, it will give you a huge edge over the competition and if you become regular on the bike, you can become GREAT after training in that place. The other plus is the astounding amount of triathletes in there too, a lot of group rides and swims. Running is not a weakness in you certainly, but getting off the bike tired will blow the best runner to the ground.

When I trained for Ironman, I asked the question to a great coach (if it's better to be a good cyclist and average runner or viceversa), and the answer was clear and logical, if you can't leave the bike feeling fresh you will be toast regardless of your running abilities. I have MANY peeps doing Ironman and I have seen this repeated time after time, actually the latest was yesterday in Arizona.

It's definitely true that getting off the bike with fresh legs is very key in the IM.  I would definitely rather hold back on the bike to avoid having trashed legs on the run.  I'm looking forward to training on the bike here since it is definitely the weakest of the three disciplines for me.  Jennie and I went for a swim this morning and we'll do a bike workout this afternoon.  It was only my third swim this year and only my second since moving to altitude, so I'm just easing myself back into swimming and trying to get used to coming up for a breath and finding there isn't that much air available.  We'll update our training time after our bike workout later today.

Visited local bike shop yesterday and looked at their saddles. They are selling the ISM Adamo Road saddle for $140 + tax. They would install and do a quick fit for either free or $5. Can get from Amazon for less than $80, including shipping. Is it worth $60 for them to install it? What do you guys (and gals) do?
