bcraht - 2012-06-26 11:37 PM 68km ride tonight, longest yet.  Saw tons of other cyclists out there.  I paid attention to my head position, and my neck/shoulders were definitely less sore.

kick butt - and isn't it fun to be out there with a bunch of other people? I love that!

Glad your neck/shoulders are good!

Holy posts, Manatees!  I’ve been gone for just over a week and had to read through almost 20 pages!!  Don’t fret though; I took some notes so as to not miss anything I was thining!   And hopefully none of you think I was spying on your conversations, because that’s kinda how I felt! J

...

My week was SUPER fun in Costa Rica – BEAUTIFUL down there!  But hot.  And apparently, training is an endangered species down there…only got 1 short run in.  But I’m back in line today and have only 1 month before my favorite race of the year – Door county ½ IM!

I’m glad to be back, crew!!  Missed you!! (PS sorry for typos!

Welcome back, Tracy!  I'm jealous...I've been to Costa Rica once and absolutely loved it.  Pura Vida!

PURA VIDA!!!  Love it!!

Dang! We are on page 91 already!  We are going to be MANATEES Part 3 pretty soon (or is that Part TRI?)

So all this talk of IM, HIM has got me considering the March HIM in San Diego! Crazy I know! Talk me out of it! Talk me in to it! Told my DH to tell me not to do it and he said he couldn't do that.  My 21 year old son who lives there told me if I "get to work" I could be ready by March (not sure what he thinks i've been doing)(he's never done a tri). Guide me my POD...

San Diego in March sounds wonderful -- weatherwise and racewise. I think you could definitely be ready. That's nine months away. I say go for it.

cdban66 - 2012-06-27 11:49 AM Yanti, I like the bad a$$ biker look that you have in your avatar. I'm not sure it stands up to the pink burkini, but it is pretty cool!

I had to F5 to see it, and I agree. Awesome picture. (I also like the pink burkini, however. I think of it almost every time I swim, even though I don't have to contend with the jellies.)

Consider yourself guided - DO IT!!!!  Get onto the BT Beginner Half Ironman Thread - it's a great plan - just a bit light on the bike.  If I can do it ANYONE can!  I'm so excited.  My IM is March we can take the journey together!  Suddenly you have made me find my mojo!

Looks like your March race is the week before Cali!  That would be pretty cool to have someone to "train with", even if you are way over and down under! Glad to help you with your mojo, I'm still concerned about the cutoff times tho.  Especially the SWIM!!!!!!!!!!!! I can do the time in a pool or calm lake but I am remembering how the choppy waters and wind slowed me in Moab...

TJ, you have so much time to improve between now and then!  If it helps at all, I am just a few weeks out and I am still concerned about the cutoff times.  I don't think that goes away; you just train as best as you can, and you just go for it!

It looks like I will be doing the Tri for Real Olympic on the 8th! My coach thinks I can do it and supports the idea--of course I am supposed to do it "for fun, not worrying about times" --yeah, cause (a) I'm not competitive AT ALL,Laughing and (b) my times are so dang fast regardless! Undecided--No worries there! It truly will be all about the fun and just getting through it!

Either way, I am so gonna need Manatee support/encouragement over the next week and a half! This will be the longest distance I have attempted so far!

Congrats on the training PR -- you're just smokin' it right now, good race, great swim, longest bike!!!

Good news on the bike position, too. And you're likely acclimating to higher mileage on the bike as well.

Thanks, Yanti.  Yes, I am gaining some confidence to be sure.  I am feeling strong and like I am recovering well and quickly from workouts.  Only 4.5 weeks to race day.  Eeeek!

Eeeek = excitement. It is a necessary part of race preparation. Embrace the Eek!

I might have to add that one to my mantra list.  Yesterday I was using one from BernardDogs, paraphrased, It's not supposed to be comfortable, that's where the growth is.

Ohhh, good one!

Nope. No actual "podium." Just a round of applause and a hand shake. Still great.

My husband took a couple pictures, but they are all horrible. (My mother would say, "They look just like you!" Thanks, Mom.) I'm letting my hair grow out, so I have gray roots, and of course, they are right around my face. Drives me batty, but those were the hairs that bleached white in the sun when I was a kid (and looked awesome when I was a teen), so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. When I saw the pictures, my family had to sit on me to keep me from running for the L'Oreal. I'm recovering from the shock, but I am still fighting the urge to color.

Anyway, here's the race report:

If I did the Oly, it would be just to finish, and I would be DFL again. It would be the longest I've ever been on my feet (3.5 to 4 hours, I estimate), and it will be blazing hot before I finish. Even the run on Sunday was getting hot, and it was shaded and not yet 9:00 a.m.

I don't know. A lot to think about.

Wow that's hot.  Absolutely wouldn't be running or riding in that heat, reckon your best options are 5am or late at night!

Not sure what to advise re- the Oly.  That's a hot race to finish DFL.  Is it worth it?  Or would you feel more comfortable doing the sprint and racing it - really going all out and giving it your best shot?

I am agreeing with you mostly. The sprint sounds the best option in the current heat but isn't there an Oly later in the year when things are cooler. You are a lot faster than me and I'm doing one in August. I think you would do better than you realise without having to wait til next year.

Did that just slip out?? Thought we had to wait for the weekend.  Yay, we will both be in over our heads! I'm still trying to get into a pool or lake more than 1x per week...it will be a looooong 1500m...just have to HTFU I guess!

I hear you on the pool stuff. Luckily i am working with my daughter on her fitness and so i am just starting to get to the pool a couple of times a week. I can't believe how my swim fitness has slumped. I'm back to 200m before i cling on for dear life to get my breath. 1500m is a v.v.v.v.v.v looooooong way right now, especially with no poolside to linger at every 50m or so.

You were the only one to spot my August reference. I am aiming to do the Anglian Water Olympic distance (They are also running The Grafman HIM at the same time) held around Grafham water.

I was going to enter a little sprint with my daughter the same day, August 12th, but she has shin splints from doing even a little bit of jogging with me This has forced us to just bike/ swim for a few weeks whilst we kickstart her weight loss in the hope that when we can start jogging again, it will put less strain on her shins.

Meanwhile, it left me with that date free again so i figured i better man up cos once you lot found out i opted for a sprint when i could have done an Oly, my life would have not been worth living. Plus its on my list and its in the same week as the actual olympic games triahtlon, so i will at least have a decent target time to aim for!

Great to know you are also getting out there and doing it. Looking forward to checking out your training.

We have the same Mom?!?! I knew I felt a great kinship with you ... my mom never fails to remind me what an ugly baby I was--even the doctor (who arrived after I did, and who had delivered my older bro and sis) said, "Whoa, where'd you get that skinny ugly baby?" Unfortunately, it's the truth!

Hey, you know what ... you can color anytime, if you still don't like it in a few weeks, you can do it then. But give yourself a chance to see how you like it this way.

Off to read the RR!

The nice thing about going for a new distance is that there really is no pressure to do anything BUT have fun and get a great experience out of it. Don't let your head tell you otherwise!

Flipper claps and thwacks, as appropriate!

Flying update. Got back in from work around 12.30pm, slipped into my running gear and legged it to meet my 9 year old daughter and the rest of her class/school as they lined up to watch the Olympic flame run past. They all had to walk to the Robecca Adlington swimming center which was the closest point it passed. Thats the swimming center i learned to swim at as a kid and so did Miss Adlington, the current 2x gold medal olympic champion.

The weather was unbelievable. Thunder and forked lightening, torrential downpours. All the little ones were soaked to the skin, but we did see the classic sight of the flame being passed from one torch bearer to another, which was pretty awesome. The rain held off for that particular sight but started again soon after as i helped walk all the children back to school.

The head made the sensible choice of letting all the children go home early so we are stripped off and drying out before i have to head back to work

Unflappable British stoicism in the face of bad weather!

Crap weather aside, that sounds like an amazing experience. It takes my breath away watching the flame travel just on TV.

So here's the update on me ... finally went to the doc today (funny, the diarrhea and fevers/chills and fatigue didn't go away by themselves after the race).

Good news: bloodwork and initial tests are normal.
Bad news: My head says WOOHOO FREE PASS!
Good news: doc called me w/results AND a scolding that specifically stated this was NOT a free pass, especially since I still had yucky symptoms, dangerously low blood pressure, but also oddly easy bleeding/bruising, and a long list of dos and don'ts.
Bad news: I think I've already broken half of them.
Good news: I got a TV and cable service!

Many people probably sit around and watch too much TV, but in my case I think this is an excellent idea. Tour de France is right around the corner! I haven't bought myself a TV since ... geez ... 1997. Not kidding.

Allen, that is soooo cool.  What an experience to share with those kids.  I would totally be willing to stand in the rain to watch the olymic torch go by!

Yanti, so glad your tests came back with good results.  Now SIT! RELAX! and enjoy watching TdF on your shiny new TV!

As for me I'm still up in the air about the HIM in March.  One minute I'm ready to sign up, the next minute I remember Moab and think I can't do it.  If I procrastinate long enough maybe it will sell out...
