Busy weekend for me including this morning but not for training. I got a call Friday that the guy building my custom shower pan could only come on Monday. I had to get the plumbing completed in the bathroom in the basement before he came this morning. I have spent all weekend finishing piping and last wall that had to be built along with the cement board for the shower. Glad I don't do plumbing for a living...Training took a back seat. I should be back on schedule. Hopefully I will get in the tabata's this evening.

Good to see everyone is ok up North. My sister just missed being in the tornado down in MS. She left work 30 mins before it came through were she worked.

I hear ya. It is snowing again here but is supposed to switch to rain tonight, which will mean a hard freeze, which will mean it might be really tough getting to the gym at 530 tomorrow morning. I am having PTSD symptoms from sliding down our huge hill the other week anticipating what it might be like tomorrow. Fortunately, I have my bike fit scheduled for this afternoon.

Swim speed session and upper body strength at gym today.  The pool was freezing!!!!  Recovery run later this afternoon.  We're having unseasonably warm weather (upper 30s - low 40s), so I'm about to take the younger boys out for a walk.  It's so good for them to get the activity.  It's snowed here almost all winter (a foot of snow is considered a dusting in Cleveland), and we've been stuck inside.  I need the fresh air, too.

I came into the office today just to get out of the house.  The roads are horrible.  I'm not looking forward to running on the treadmill.

uhcoog - 2013-02-11 7:30 AMLong run done.  Need to get back into foam rolling on a daily basis.  I'm starting to ache like an old man.  Oh wait..........  I am.
You are not old! Geez! Tell me about foam rolling. I've seen it and read about it, but it works? In what ways?

Foam rolling is wonderful.  It breaks up the fascia that covers the muscles and allows for increased blood flow to the muscles, which speeds up healing.

This is the roller I use:

http://www.amazon.com/OPTP-Pro-Foam-Rollers-Marble/dp/B002C9EX14/ref=sr_1_9?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1360603909&sr=1-9

Definately worth while!

I take it that means no running in Yaktrax?  It must be really bad for you to be on that treadmill.

Its way too dangerous.  Roads are barely plowed and there's only one lane (not one lane per side, one lane total), no sidewalks and mounds of snow 15' - 20' high so no one can see you.  Way too dangerous to be out on the roads at least until they get a little more cleared off and by most estimtes that won't happen until Friday.

That sounds awful, Kel.  How were you able to drive to work?  I was in a really bad wreck when I was pregnant with Gordie, and it was traumatizing.  I don't do dangerous roads anymore!!  Be careful driving home.

Tried to upload bike fit pictures...not happening now. I will figure it out later. I had to park my car 1/2 mile from my house, down the huge hill, so I wouldn't wipe out in the morning on my way to the gym at 5am. Should make for a long, cold, dark, walk.

So I woke up this morning to a very light sleeping household.  Means no trainer in the morning.  So I went to the gym and got some circuits in.  I'll do my 1:45 on the trainer later.

Back to normal...Bathroom plumbing done! 1:10 Run finishing at the top of z2. Last mile was at 9:08 pace. I am seeing improvements from this HR training. For those that have just started be patient the speed comes eventually!

1 hour on the trainer with a Z2 finish.  Felt strong!

I ate my first grains this morning after almost 7 weeks without touching them.  My gluten-free oats were delicious  I'm done with the Whole30 challenge.  This way of eating isn't working for me, but I did learn a lot from my 7 weeks.  Most important thing is that it rid me of my sweet tooth.  I sweetened my oatmeal with blueberries this morning (rather than honey or maple syrup).  It tasted great that way.  I also drink my coffee unsweetened now, and I limit sugars to fruit only.  I learned that eating good fats is OK.  I will continue to eat avocado, coconut, etc. sparingly.  I've tried many wonderful recipes that I wouldn't have tried had I not been on this plan.  I don't want to permanently omit dairy and grains when I'm training for an Ironman.  I already have to cut out enough foods with my Celiac disease.

Congrats Jen! I didn't go through with the whole30 but I did take away about eating healthier. I did find some really good recipes and will be making one of them tonight actually. Pork chops grilled in a skillet with coconut oil on both sides for 4 mins(enough to brown them), then add a red pepper, green beans, mushrooms, carrots, and broccoli, then you put in dutch oven in the oven at 350 for 30 mins! Yum, Yum and the whole family likes it as well

So the power company managed to take our power away yesterday at 11 AM which we knew was going to happen at some point when they removed the tree. Little did we know they would quit for the day leaving the street down. Overall compared to others still not that bad. My wife and kids went to my mothers last night but I stayed home because of the pets. The overnight low was 30 which wasn't bad either so I woke up to a 60 degree bedroom which is more than tolerable for one night. I talked to a guy at the gym who said his is 39 degrees, ouch. Hopefully it's back on today but they are only quoting people Thursday or sooner. NStar blows.

I still did the trainer for a half hour by flashlight, LOL. Went to the gym and swam 200 yards when the power went down there and they kicked everybody out of the pool. So I ran two miles at recovery pace and then went back in to swim. Wasn't feeling it after 300 yards and called it a day.

Ya I just couldn't do it. I cut down on the grains, dairy and stuff like hummas.

I've been MIA on the boards, but I'm still around.

Scott- Thanks for being so open about your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and to your family.  You are an unbelievably strong person!

Jen - I too couldn't do Whole30 for more than 15 days, and even then, I probably didn't adhere to it 100%.  I did learn valuable lessons, but I find it so restrictive.  Like you, i love sushi, and there are just certain things not allowed that seem a bit crazy.  I did learn some valuable lessons and have been sticking to the weighing only once a week.

Kidtri - I too train by HR, and I agree.  With consistency and patience, you do see great gains.  After 2 years of inactivity, I have been training since after Thanksgiving, and I have seen gains in my speed I didn't think would happen this soon.

It's on the bike for me today instead of a run, because of the poorly plowed roads.  Oh, how I can't wait to get outside and run again!

Have a great day everyone!

I think the education is definitely worth doing Whole30.  And they even advocate not staying on it.  It is to educate yourself and how certain foods react with your body.  Everyone is different.  Dairy doesn't seem to bother my stomach, but after the Hot Chocolate Race on Saturday, I decided on a burger and fries, my only indulgence of the day.  The next day, my stomach ached all day long.

I love these and teach all of these in my classes.  Another core exercise that I teach:

Plank with alternating knee taps.  Very challenging!

Kelly thanks for exercises...hope roads get better soon.   I have been doing more strength training this winter than in the past and curious to see what happens with it. My arms seem bigger....feel a little stronger with the swim I think (I do not have a swim background).

Ran outside today...beautiful day.... the snow is clearing/melting quite a bit. I will avoid that treadmill as much as possible

OK, just finished my 1:30 hot yoga and 1:10 low cadence bike ride ... I am pooped!

I know I need to train for my race, but does anyone else really use their workouts to relieve the stress of work or whatever?  I really didn't want to go to yoga tonight, but I know it really helps relax me. Then it was just like automatic pilot on the bike ... I find myself on auto pilot alot lately

Carrie - all my workouts are stress relievers, especially running.  Running alone (or with my dog) is the best way for me to zone out and forget about whatever is going on at work at that moment.  Don't need to talk, don't need to think, just run.

I thought when crazy man left in December things would settle down, but with a new sheriff in town all the regulars are playing the same old games trying to make themselves look good (and others not so good).  I'm soooooo tired of these games, and don't play them, so it really stresses me out.

But, we are off to Hawaii tomorrow morning for 8 days.  I'm going to turn off from my work email on my phone tonight and not think about it.  One more day....

1:30 run in the books.  Tabata intervals later this morning.  I feel as if I'm bouncing back faster after my training sessions.  Not sure what's different, but it's a good feeling.

Waiting to hear if my sister had her fourth baby last night.  If so, I'm going to visit her this weekend and taking all four kids by myself.  Should be interesting!  I also plan on taking my road bike and trainer down there because I don't want to go 4 days without riding.  It's supposed to snow again on Friday.  Think I need to wrap something around my bike if there's snow coming down (it will be on the back of the car)?
