We went out for a group hike for 2 hours, covered 3.8 miles and 1450 feet of elevation (a GPS nerd was with us). He's going to send me the data at some point, along with some pictures if they come out. Sounds like you are having a load of fun! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright I guess I am having one of those weeks. I get the treadmill today and then spent a good 3 and half hours dragging the thing down to the basement and putting it together. I power it up and guess what? It doesn't work! Unbelievable! I try alll the basic troubleshooting. It powers up but none of the buttons on the console work I can't start the belt and and access the menu even though the display comes up. I can't tell you how angry and fustrated I am. I could've swam and/or ran today so it's a missed workout(s) and a wasted evening. I'll be calling these guys tomorrow to get it figured out. I somehow have this feeling that this is not going to be something that can be fixed over the phone and that I am not going to be using it for a while. Bummer. |

I would be counting my blessings if I had one and it broke...lol Will, hope your calves get better, have you tried a foam roller? Tracy, glad your foot is recovering and feels good. I did spinervals today and almost threw up! Ya'll have a GREAT weekend! |

I did not have the safety key in place and it was in demo mode. It would help if I actually read the instructions and followed them all the way through but because of my lack of patience and the fustrating week I have been having I was very shortsighted yesterday. A little patience would have gone a long way last night. I may give it a go during lunch today. I am sort of debating the weather is nice but I am short on time so I may be able to get a longer run if I just do it indoors today. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tracy, I love hearing the good news about your foot! Will, how are you calves today?
I've had a good training week. Last Saturday I had plans that wouldn't allow for my ride but I did get in a 10 mile run with the last half being a little more up-tempo. It was a horrible day for my heels. They hurt from the beginning all the way to the end at every step. Even got worse as the run went on. I was close to incapacitated afterwards. The next day they felt normal (sore but not above that threshold where it can't be ignored). Jordan wanted to do our usual Sunday long run, but she wasn't content with 10....she wanted 14. She's doing her build towards a marathon in late April. This is the longest run either of us have done (in my case since the late 1980's anyway). It started out interestingly. I noticed she was lagging behind me and I was worried that she wasn't feeling well. I kept slowing down but it was hard to maintain such a slow pace. I estimated we were going 10 minute miles but I held back for her benefit. We got to around 8 miles and I could begin to feel the first, slight sense of fatigue in my legs. Just a little heavier than the weightlessness that is the norm. Jordan didn't feel it yet. Anyway, after we finished the 14 (my heels did fine) the GPS told us we'd averaged just about 9:00 pace! She then told me that the early miles had been 8:30 pace and I thought they were 9:00. Interesting to be going much faster than it feels! Monday was a horrible heel day. It hurt like crazy to run even though I'd 'warmed them up' by swimming first. But through the run they improved. That was 6 miles. Tuesday they felt good and I did 5 miles in addition to my cycling. Wednesday I swam a little then ran and felt really good. Did 7 miles because it felt good and I was watching a good movie. That night Jordan and I went to run with the running club. It was a 3.7 mile route but she tells me she wants at least 6 miles. So that was a 13 mile day for me. Heels were good! During that run the poor girl caught a toe on a sidewalk seam and went down hard on the concrete. She ripped a hole in her tights and bloodied her knee as well as skinning up her hands and hip. The other running club members were really great about stopping and supporting us and making sure she was OK. After I forced her to tell me how hard she'd hit her kneecap and was satisfied with the answer (no major impact that could have broken it), I quickly rushed her back to running. I wanted her moving again before the pain set in. I knew the knee would get stiff and the burns on her knee and palms would continue to worsen for a few minutes. It was a good call and she felt fine and brushed it off. Thurs 5, Friday (today) 6 and the heels feel better than usual. I'm over 50miles for the week and don't plan a run for tomorrow...but if I did I could be over 60! BTW, besides the heels there is no pain, no aches, no arthritic feeling, no fatigue feeling in my legs at all this week. Not even with a 14 miler on pavement the day after a 10 miler and none the day after the 14 miler....none of that the day after the 7/6 combo runs either. If it weren't for the heels I'd say that I feel bulletproof in the legs like I did as a teenage runner. This isn't luck...it's a 'FINALLY' situation. I've been doing my part for over 2 solid years now. Actually, it must be 3 complete years of a commitment to running 6 days per week. At my age and weight it's probably how long it takes. But it eventually happens. Now to get fast. (like Dirk)

![]() Holy smokes Jeff, that is a ton of running! Awesome and a testament to patience for sure. I made the pup suck it up and run with me this morning. So far I have only been walking him every morning but he seems even more full of energy when we come back from walking. In fact he got himself permanently kicked out the house by his ridiculous behavior after his walk on Tuesday. He streaked through the entire house in a massive puppy freak out, bouncing off of every piece of furniture including the living room couch where my husband was sitting all dressed for work! Then he stood right there on the floor and peed. I looked at him and said - your done. So today was his official first run with expectations and he did really good. I say with expectations because I know there is a bit of leash work involved in running with a pup. I've been conditioning him slowly during our walks to learn to heel. He has been on a retractable leash but when he finds himself walking beside me I reward him with a piece of kibble. Eventually I included the command heel with the kibble. Then we progressed to me giving the command when he was not even paying attention - and he understood! This week we have been able to progress to the distance of one telephone pole to another with him walking at heel. This is amazing to me really because at just 3 months his attention span is pretty short and he is easily distracted by any piece of trash on the sidewalk. I'm pleased to say he did very well on the jog this morning! I asked the vet if he was too young to run with (pup had to have shots again today) and the vet said "you need to wear this dog out". Ha ha ha, I'm afraid I have my work cut out for me!!!!! |

He loves that HAHAHA, this is too funny and just for the record I did throw a few things, a big temper tandrum and I used ALOT of bad language last night so that alone should allow me to keep the man card. I think it was a little less embarassing going back and reading the instructions than calling the company and having them walk me throught this in like 30 seconds. I really would have felt like a bigger idiot then I already feel like I am had I done that. |

I swear she is like two different dogs, she can be very calm a pleasure to have around or a wired ball of energy bouncing off the furniture and walls. I try and run her around as much as I can to have her burn off some of that energy but it doesn't always work. Sounds like you are doing a great job with the pup and with training him. Lab's are smart dogs but they do seem to have selective hearing, keep being persistent it is paying off. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff that's an awesome week of training. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeffy- calves are still sore, but not painful. Hoping for a long bike ride tomorrow, so if that goes well, I'm thinking it's probably okay to keep beating them up a little. I'm think it has to be either the increased workouts or I'm pointing my toes down during Jorge's intervals (as Dirk mentioned). I think it's the second... so gonna watch that from now on and may also move some workouts around... headed out the door now for a little swim action. |

She then told me that the early miles had been 8:30 pace and I thought they were 9:00. Interesting to be going much faster than it feels! Wow...this is the craziest thing to me. I never have an issue that comes and goes so sporadically. It must be incredibly frustrating. I'm glad that you are still able to get your runs in though. I keep telling myself that I will get my runs in, but my weekend activities lately have just trashed my legs and I don't have it in me to run with them beat up like that. My major training for my half starts in April. I'll have to make sure to have a good base by then and we'll be good to go. For now I'm sticking with my strength of my legs and to get some good miles on the bike to be able to happily ride my 175 miles for MS in June. Happy Friday all! |

I love seeing huge mileage weeks but sometimes I hate what it takes to get there. It sounds like you've had a great week of running to day the least. And bigger deal to me is that you and Jordan can spend so much time together. One day I hope one of my girls will pick up some running or cycling shoes and allow me the influence you have with her. Fast?? I am not so sure. I guess August 4 will be the date to determine who's actually faster. Right now I'm not as confident in me as you are. |

Ha ha ha, I'm afraid I have my work cut out for me!!!!! Our mini dachshund does the "running like his tails on fire" thing sometimes when he has to go out. I have picked up on this little detail, but many times I think I'm the only one. As far as training, the first three months are key to a dogs training period! I had my chocolate lab from 8 weeks on and I began training her for bird hunting as soon as I brought her home. Puppy's are strongly looking to the alpha to for approval and they will pick up things extremely quickly if given the time. "Cheyenne" would pick things up on one or two tries much of the time and then on successive training she would only need to review things once before it was concreted into her behavior. She was off a leash and fully controllable during her first 3-4 months but the leash was probably one of the more difficult things to get her to catch on too. Keep working intently during his young period and you'll be amazed by how much he wants to be approved of by the alpha. One other suggestion: Make sure he knows who the alpha is. I would suggest that whoevers' dog he is that they be the only person that feeds him for the next couple of months, the person who does the bulk of the training and I would even suggest that person let him out nearly all of the time. This can certainly become difficult but over the long haul it will help the dog learn to seek the approval of the ONE trainer that will spend the most time with him. |

Thanks for humoring me blabbering on about the puppy everyone! Not much question about who he thinks the alpha is as I'm pretty much the only one who does anything with the dog at this point. Not picking on my family, but the kids are too small and hubby is working. And I kind of get entertained by reading dog training books then trying out what I read. I just wish we could get some sunshine and warmer temps. It's getting old going out in my scarf and gloves to play fetch! |

I completed my run in 2:39:10 but I didn't do any miles at marathon race pace as I have been doing. Some of the pain I was feeling and the 2 miles at Tempo (actually just a bit slower) on Wednesday seemed to have left me a little bit more fatigued and concerned about a bigger problem if I pushed the pace. Once I completed the run I had a little more than an hour to cool down, shower and get to the ART specialist before some treatment. I was slightly hobbling as I went through the door because of the development of pain in my heel during the run. Once he treated me I was nearly back to normal with only very minor pain. I also took some Aleve before leaving for ART. I am planning a 3500-ish swim and a 2 hour ride for tomorrow to round out my training for the week. I am kind of excited about the swimming because I missed almost every week in January and now I am back to a normal 2 swims per week schedule. Next week's schedule will be very similar for swim and bike but the run will be 40-42 with a 21 mile run on tap for Friday. |
