Allen, that is soooo cool.  What an experience to share with those kids.  I would totally be willing to stand in the rain to watch the olymic torch go by!

Yanti, so glad your tests came back with good results.  Now SIT! RELAX! and enjoy watching TdF on your shiny new TV!

As for me I'm still up in the air about the HIM in March.  One minute I'm ready to sign up, the next minute I remember Moab and think I can't do it.  If I procrastinate long enough maybe it will sell out...

You're already a different person than when you did Moab.

And in March, you will again be a completely different athlete than you are right now. Don't let who you are now dictate who you can be 9 months from now.

However, if you have legitimate concerns/fears, let us talk you out of those, too.

Drive by post -- swamped at work and probably will be for the next week or so.

I hope that all of you are doing well.  I'll try to make time to catch up soon.

Well, I’m back. In one-piece-ish.

I flew into Mammoth and spent the first few days running and hiking the high desert with my parents. We then headed into Reno for the family reunion.  Yanti, you would have loved it. I was surrounded by piglets for the whole trip. Unfortunately they were mostly all related to me ; )

The following happened in Reno: I got a job offer at a certain “adult” establishment, I threw up in a planter box outside the hotel (not from the all you can drink beer festival we attended but from the over-indulgence in the all you can eat crab legs,) me and 22 of my cousins rented out a party bus on our last night in Reno. I don’t know that I can share any more details from that or I would have to kill you. All in all I got to see about 100+ family members.

(these are just a few 1st cousins, I have 30-something of them, no SOs included!)

I also got a fair amount of running in. Probably not the ideal for 4 weeks out from an “A” marathon but not terrible either.

SAAAAAAAAAAALTY!!!

I missed you terribly. Apparently I've also been very badly behaved in your absence, but I'm sure you won't notice. Right?

How is it that all your family gatherings always include pole dancing??? Then again, I can't write what happens at some of my family events either (like my sister and I at my brother's 50th bday ... cough cough) ... but damn.

So glad you had/made/were an awesome time and are back in one piece! Having runned a bit, no less!

I hear you on the pool stuff. Luckily i am working with my daughter on her fitness and so i am just starting to get to the pool a couple of times a week. I can't believe how my swim fitness has slumped. I'm back to 200m before i cling on for dear life to get my breath. 1500m is a v.v.v.v.v.v looooooong way right now, especially with no poolside to linger at every 50m or so.

You were the only one to spot my August reference. I am aiming to do the Anglian Water Olympic distance (They are also running The Grafman HIM at the same time) held around Grafham water.

I was going to enter a little sprint with my daughter the same day, August 12th, but she has shin splints from doing even a little bit of jogging with me This has forced us to just bike/ swim for a few weeks whilst we kickstart her weight loss in the hope that when we can start jogging again, it will put less strain on her shins.

Meanwhile, it left me with that date free again so i figured i better man up cos once you lot found out i opted for a sprint when i could have done an Oly, my life would have not been worth living. Plus its on my list and its in the same week as the actual olympic games triahtlon, so i will at least have a decent target time to aim for!

Great to know you are also getting out there and doing it. Looking forward to checking out your training.

Way to go Allen!  REgarding the swim--I can tell you that I find the longer distances in the OW easier than in the pool.  I had a hard time with some 400's on Wed after my long swim on Monday.  Now granted, the wetsuit has a lot to do with it, but I think the mental part of counting lap after lap after lap and having to turn every 25m makes the pool much more difficult!  Either way--way to challenge yourself!  You will do great!

Flying update. Got back in from work around 12.30pm, slipped into my running gear and legged it to meet my 9 year old daughter and the rest of her class/school as they lined up to watch the Olympic flame run past. They all had to walk to the Robecca Adlington swimming center which was the closest point it passed. Thats the swimming center i learned to swim at as a kid and so did Miss Adlington, the current 2x gold medal olympic champion.

The weather was unbelievable. Thunder and forked lightening, torrential downpours. All the little ones were soaked to the skin, but we did see the classic sight of the flame being passed from one torch bearer to another, which was pretty awesome. The rain held off for that particular sight but started again soon after as i helped walk all the children back to school.

The head made the sensible choice of letting all the children go home early so we are stripped off and drying out before i have to head back to work

So cool.  I have had the honour of watching the torch both in '88 and 2010.  I too get chills.  Sorry you had such terrible weather, but sounds like the experience was awesome for the kids!

So here's the update on me ... finally went to the doc today (funny, the diarrhea and fevers/chills and fatigue didn't go away by themselves after the race).

Good news: bloodwork and initial tests are normal.
Bad news: My head says WOOHOO FREE PASS!
Good news: doc called me w/results AND a scolding that specifically stated this was NOT a free pass, especially since I still had yucky symptoms, dangerously low blood pressure, but also oddly easy bleeding/bruising, and a long list of dos and don'ts.
Bad news: I think I've already broken half of them.
Good news: I got a TV and cable service!

Many people probably sit around and watch too much TV, but in my case I think this is an excellent idea. Tour de France is right around the corner! I haven't bought myself a TV since ... geez ... 1997. Not kidding.

Yanti, please listen to the doctor.  I ask questions here so that those that know how to help me give me advice, which I then follow.  So that I get better.  Please consider the doctor your mentor.  And yaaaaaaaaay TV!

But Moab didn't beat you, TJ.  You won.  And you will do so with the HIM as well.  Just sign up--you will make it happen.  I believe the quote was "You don't quit".

Rode my bike to work today for the first time.  This work anyway.  25km one way, with a couple good hills.

Ohhhh I previewed the marathon course yesterday!

Also, I have been running with my gaiters and I remember someone asking what they are. Anyway, here they are:

Nice and low profile for racing. They work great for the kind of trail I will be running. If anything, they do a great job of keeping my shoes tied!

Awesome! I love bike commuting. It takes some advanced planning each night but it forces you to keep your sh*t together. Also, it's nice getting a little bonus workout in.

It looks like I will be doing the Tri for Real Olympic on the 8th! My coach thinks I can do it and supports the idea--of course I am supposed to do it "for fun, not worrying about times" --yeah, cause (a) I'm not competitive AT ALL,Laughing and (b) my times are so dang fast regardless! Undecided--No worries there! It truly will be all about the fun and just getting through it!

Either way, I am so gonna need Manatee support/encouragement over the next week and a half! This will be the longest distance I have attempted so far!

Yes! Way to take the leap! I've got the Oly in August and I'm still pretty sure I'm crazy but other people keep telling I can do it . . . so who am I to contradict them? Sounds like you'll have a great time!

Maybe with a TV you'll sit down and rest for a minute or two.  Jeez, if I was your doctor I'd have you committed just for the excuse of tying you to the bed! NOW GO LAY DOWN!

Nice to see you back Salty. No, honestly.

Got some fun news for ya...Ran to the Olympic torch relay and as the crowds grew bigger i had to run on the road to keep some space. I was wearing my triathlon T shirt and 2xu shorts and as i neared the end of the run, at the top of a pretty steep hill, some of the crowd started to cheer and it spread to all of the crowd including air horns. I had a big smile on my face and gave them a wave then eased off as i got to the section where my daughters school were standing.

Must have been cheering cos they new that i was setting my fatest ever mile time. I ran it at 7.58/mile which is my fastest ever by over a minute a mile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
