Oh, well. How can you compete? Ugh Kendra - I hope they give you a lot more details soon...tough if they havent really given you any detailed information yet! |

Champion 26509 Sydney | Subject: RE: Nibbs - XL D001 - 2009-07-25 4:33 AM What Would Nibbs Do? (WWND?) I posted this in COJ too. Yeah, I know. One needs to be careful when asking BT (especially COJ) what to do, but I'm so confused that my head is going to explode.... I was just offered a new job. On the plus side: - Hours are better. - Workload is lighter. - Area is nicer. (There's more to do in the nearby than where I live now.) - Management seems less "dysfunctional." - The job was created just for me, so they apparently want me. (Just wait till they get to know me. LOL!) On the minus side: - It's in another state, so I need to relocate. - Pay is lower. (About 18% less!) - I become the "junior" member of the department. (I don't think layoffs will be an issue. But if they ever occur, I'll be the first let go.) - I only have 2 1/2 weeks to make the move. So What Would Nibbs Do? The 18% pay cut and relocation to an unknown area are the problems. (I think the cost of living is a little less, but I'm still investigating that.) Any insights or comments? Questions I should ask myself? Thanks! Hi Dee - I know everyone has given you great advice so I thought I would just share a couple of little stories. First.... how SuperCat moved to Australia: I was working in radio in New Zealand and saw a job advertised..applied for, got and interview and got offered thejob. The positives were more pay, great opportunitiy, more responsibility working fora small company and i would get to travel and learn new skills. It also got me away from adifficult work situation that involved kooky hours, terrible pay, lack of respect from colleagues..... The negatives were moving to a country where i had no support network, on call work and other things that becane more aparent once I started the job.
Second... how SuperCat got her current job: The move to Australia was a great one but the job with so much promisehad got out of hand. I was good at it but only one person so the workload and stress levels were wearing me down, the constant travel was a chore - especially with all the time spent travellingearly in the morningn and late at nights. I worked myself into hospital, got diagnosed with a chronic stomach condition.... took 2 weeks off work and the lower stres saw me start to get healthy before returning to the stressful environment reveresed any improvement. On top of that, while I got along well with management, their lack of engagement in the masssive projects I was working on, lack of engagement with the key stakeholders on the clients side which i kept sayingwas needed, and inability to provide back up when I was not in the office due to being onsite with clients wore me down. My mobile was constantly ringing and it was just too much for oneperson... So... with the stress levels, silly hors and workload I started looking for jobs. Got offered a few - some with more money and benefits too - but didnt take anything.... then I went and interviewed for my curent job...the advertised salary was 75% of what i was earning at time time.... I clicked with the boss, the work sounded interesting, the hours *normal*, no on call and no laptop... plus it was a brand new position that I could shape myself. In the end I couldnt say no.... ended up talking that job at 83% of my salary at my last job and havent looked back.... Yes I still get stressful times but its not the same... yes I still sometimes work kooky hours or take work home or get frustrated but its still not the same. After 3 years (yes a Gen Y who has STAYED in a job that long) Ive framed up my job some... but my initial insticnts were correct and unless a massive opportunitiy comes along...Im not going anywhere!
But... all the good stuff I difnt knowwhen I took the job... and i had as many people telling me to take the job as not... it doesnt always workout (as seen in my first example) and a paycut is something you have to workout if you really can live off.... I had some challenging times with that! And still do! Best of luck making a decision! |

Just make sure that when I post something its substantial! Not sure it helped.... Just storytelling A few others have done some "storytelling" too. Some of the stories gave me things to think about. A lot of people had good comments, and advice.... And, of course, the entire BT community is always really supportive and helpful.... |

Just make sure that when I post something its substantial! Not sure it helped.... Just storytelling Well, when there are good people, like Deeder, SuperCat, Tinky, etc. etc., why wouldn't we be, ya know? Sounds like a little too aggressive with the e-mails and such, but, if that person is working over 8 hour days, then they're weeding through some stuff and trying to get the easy questions/answers out of the way? Don't be expected to respond outside YOUR work time, though. Good luck, Dee! |
