I need a little help/advice. Do we have to wear our race number during the bike? I thought I read somewhere that we have to wear this. Does this mean our bike number will not be good enough?

The reason for the question is I have a race belt which holds GU's. I would love to have it ready to go for the run, but do not want to carry those Gu's with me on the bike (I have a Bento box and bike jersey for what I need on the bike). If I have to use my belt on the bike too should I use a different belt than that for the run? Will I have a second race number to attach to my belt? Am I making this overly complicated, lol?

I have a belt for the bike for just a number, it's plain best with no spot for nutrition, and a different belt which holds gels, etc. for the run.  If you want, PM me and I can try and find one of our extra plain belts if you want it for the bike. We got several extras as freebies at race expo a while back.  Swapping belts in T2 can be done in no time and is what I prefer now.

Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate the offer for help. I have 2 belts as well. One with places for nutritution and one without, so I should be fine. I just didn't know how it all works. Based on what you are saying I will leave my nutrition belt in my T2 bag with Gus already attached and my race belt in T1 bag with my number attached.

For those of you who have done IMFL, how does the requirement of four bike lengths and 20 seconds to pass affect your rhythm?  Concerned that I will be expending to much effort to pass or slowing down to avoid the draft penalty.

Four bike lengths is a lot.

I guess a lot of it depends on where you are in the swim pack.  If you come out of the water with the main pack not drafting becomes more difficult.

I personally had aboslutely NO issues passing people or getting passed.  I'm a good swimmer but a lousy biker so I had people passing me all day.

Really, if you just go your pace you should be able to pass just about anybody slower than you within 20" unless you and that other person are super-close on speed.

Agree with Jen...much harder on hilly course than on flat course.

I am slow swimmer and average for my AG which is still slow, and had no issue with passing folks within the time limits.

It will be fun!

This makes me VERY excited!  Not that I haven't been giddy all day!

I had one MAJOR weight lifted off my shoulders, found a renter for my townhouse!!  I was so stressed about finding someone when I got back but at the final hour, I found someone that I think will be great!  Now just have to pack the car for a VERY early wake up call...oh and a nice sports massage tonight

I am using the same belt for the bike and the run..in the 10 little loops around the belt "5 on each side" I have FRS chews that fit perfectly in the loops...I plan to nibble on these throughout the bike and the run to suppliment my gels in flasks and liquid fuel in bike bottle.

With having your GU packs in a belt that you are planning to use "only" for the run,  i would suggest getting another belt for your bike number.

It is my understanding that yes, you need to wear a number on both the bike and the run.  At all IM events I've been to (HIM only) this is the case.

I have 2 number belts.  Like you, one with pouch that I am taking on the run.  The other is one I got from some race somewhere and is just a belt without a pouch.

If you are changing shirts you could always pin it to your bike shirt then keep you belt for the run.

Or, and this is a last resort because of the time constraints in a full IM, you could wear your belt for the bike then have all your run nutrition in a baggie in T2 and take an extra 15 seconds to load your pouch   I make fun because i also have thoughts like these.  Like 15 sec is going to make or break my day.

Duane

I guess I will just wear the thin race belt with the number and then strap on the other belt at T2. The only nutrition on my belt is the rear slide out 20oz bottle. Everything else can be stuffed in the bike jersey pockets or the pockets in the tri shorts. Not sure why you've got to wear a number during the bike besides the bike mounted number.

Check out Pier Park. It's not too far away from the race area and its a mall sort of place with several eateries. They have a Mexican joint, a Red Robin Burger joint I believe, and some other places.

The taper and anticipation is driving me nuts! It's my first IM and it's this mix of nerves, feeling like I am going to rock it, not wanting to expect too much but expecting it anyway, and wanting it to get here while not wanting it to end...geesh...do they have shrinks at the aide stations? Laughing

I am driving over tomorrow morning. I think I can't check in until 2ish anyway. It's only a couple hour drive. Late afternoon bike ride and then just gonna soak it all in.
