4.16 mile run today at 29:54.  7:10/mi pace.  I tested the knee and it felt great.  Now to work on my fitness.  Goal by May is to run a 6:20 pace for 7.5 mi Bloomsday run.

wow. That is awesome.

Kate, how was the Triathlon/beer?

Race report?

Ha ha! It will take me a little to get a report up. I almost didn't go since I've had a stomach bug all week. It was a little rough but I'm so glad I went and did it. The swim was bad, but I think I've swum 3 days in the past month with my husband in Asia and my dad in the hospital (wow I have a lot of excuses). I got passed by two people in the last 200 yards so was fourth in my heat out of the water. The bike was fun as it was a closed course with three laps so lots of passing and I hit 19.4 mph so all of the mountain biking didn't kill my training. My aero pad slipped so the bars were hard to use. Run was okay 27 min. Got in a super fun sprint to the and just didn't have it to win. So overall a ton of fun, and I'm happy with the results given my lack of training. I think I'm going to do a run focus for a while and work on that. I got a cool beer glass but have not filled it yet.

My only problem is why the beer glass has not been filled yet??Laughing Sounds like a fun race!

After two weeks off I started my HIM plan again and will include some strength training too. May forgo my week day swims for the weight lifting this first twenty weeks. Today I schedule to run with some friends who are at my pace, rode my bike into town and then met up with them for the run and then biked home, the long way.  I made it home faster than the ride in because the wind was at my back...I was FLYING!  What fun!  Homework for pre cal is done for this week...haven't a clue what I am doing so study all week for my test on Thursday.  Good thing my one man support team is also a mathgeek and a good tutor...guess he's a keeper!

Your support team sounds like a pretty good guy!  Cheering you on and tutoring you in math... kind of wish your guy could give my wife and call and give her some tips...  As for the math tutoring, I'm sitting here with my son helping him with his homework... It's taking a lot more brainpower than I actually posses.

He is but its just his turn to be the support team...he was a competitive body builder in the 80's, Mr. San Diego even, and our lives revolved around his workout schedule, meals, his fatigue and his military flight schedule.

Talk about a good support team... when I called to let him know I went into labor he asked, "Do I have time to workout?" and my answer was yup!

Good luck with the math...fractions, percents and basic algebra I've got....trig not so much!

Run and swim done... 12 days to the race and the taper could not come soon enough... Even though I only had to swim 600 yards - it felt like I was swimming though glue.

My reward - a nice pumpkin ale from one of my fav. local breweries.  God, I wish we could ship beer through the mail... there is some much I'd like to share...

Pumpkin.  Huh.Undecided

The six pack I had (thank you wifey)  was a New belgium product.  It was called Red October.  If your familliar with New Belgium (flat tire), it has a distinct flavor that is starting to grow on me as I get older.

I also broke down and had a Sierra Nevada Torpedo the other evening.  this being off the wagon stuff has been a tremendous trial for me, but the moderation has been good.

Graduate school is no fun.

I like new Belgium - but I don't love it.  A lot of their beers have a pretty malty taste and I'm not a huge fan of that.  For example - Fat tire is an amber and its just a little too sweet for me.  How was the Red October - should I search it out?

Moderation is good but hard when you're drinking tasty beverages like a Torpedo.  Sierra Nevada is one of my favs - nothin malty about their products.

Graduate school is no fun.

I graduated from graduate school 15 years ago - and it was no fun then.  Can only imagine how much it would suck with a wife and kids...

I worked my a$$ off today and had to go for my ride after the sun set.  In my head, I know what a bad idea it is to ride in the dark but the amount of "bike love" I got from drivers was unreal.  Usually people move over enough so their left tire is on the center line but tonight the vast majority of cars move all the way over into the next lane.  Sure I was biking on uncrowded roads but getting the extra room was pretty cool.

Feel off the wagon last night.  At 10:30, I realized that I had eaten an entire sleeve or Ritz crackers and wolfed down about 6 tbs of peanut butter.  It was a page out of Fat Guy handbook...  I ate well today but I haven't hit the peanut butter that hard since last November... Aint gonna start now.

No beers tonght - saving up for the beer tasting tomorrow.  You all are invited - it's pumpkin/Octoberfest beers... Kevin is such a big fan of fruit in his beer I expect to see him at my door tomorrow night.Laughing

Well if pickles were involved, I  might suspect you are pregnant...Wink

Sorry I am full on board with the "no fruit beers"!

I will admit to a Big rock lime light lager and I did have a "wraspberry" ale that was good for about a 1/2 of a beer but that is it! Might pick up a 6-pack of Flying monkeys smashbomb atomic IPA.

Hops added at every stage of the brewing...hmmm hops!

Tomorrow, 5 mile run in morning and hour spin class in evening!

I do not like ambers, at all.  I do however like the malty flavor of New Belguim products and notice it across their brews.  I didn't like their beer at first, but the flavor has worn on me over time, and now I'm a fan.  If it's on sale, and another brand (sierra nevada, deschutes, widmer bros. etc.) are not, I'll drink it. I like their 2 below winter ale, and I would put the Red October in that same category of an enjoyable brew.

David, the eating may be a biproduct of your working out. Your body's way of saying "feed me."  If I remember correctly, I lost the weightloss challenge by 3 pounds, and gave up when I could not maintain weightloss heading into last few weeks prior to HIM.  Eat and be glad.  your body will thank you for it on race day.

Kevin - thanks for the encouragement... I agree that it partially has to do with all the training I'm doing - but I also know that I was just stuffing my face.  Compulsive eating, the inability to stop (king of like that insane desire to add more miliage) has been something I have battled since I was a kid... However, I spent yesterday beating my self but realized that what really pisses me off is the fact that I hadn't eaten like that in almost a year.  There is definitely a good side to that - so says the person who has dropped almost 90 pounds... Onward!

Just wanted to point out how much I have enjoyed the challenge forums... They really held me accountable and motivated me to reach my goals.  So while I'm sad to say that DH kicked my a$$, it was kind of fun going head to head.

DH - want to go head to head in the October challenge?  Winner gets to buy a beer of their choice - like the one you were talking about last week? I hear there is a new brew by Dogfish Head... dying to try it.

For the record - swim is done.  7 mile run this afternoon.  Loving the taper!

My Triathlete magazine came in the mail yesterday, gwad I love when that happens! One of the articles was a seven week half mary training program.  Stepping out of my box I think I am giving it a whirl this fall...kinda double dog daring myself. I really think I need something different and this plan still includes a swim and bike.

Whatta ya think?

wow 7 weeks, how many runs/week? Have you a race picked out? Me and my wife did the surf city half(Huntington Beach) in Feb. Beautiful course and great weather...plus a couple free beers at the end didn't hurt! Smile

Sounds like a  good one...as I wistfully daydream of sandy beaches, warm sun and pretty little drinks with umbrellas...aaaahhhh.  I spent much of my youthful summers at Huntington and Newport Beach and was just there a few weeks ago.  I still have my tan from hanging out at the San Diego beaches and Malibu.  How I miss So Cal!  I digress...I haven't shopped for a race but will do soon; moving Huntington to the top of the list if I can afford it!

Hell Yes - Top of the Page!!!

Great run today... Started out crappy - my knee hurt so much I thought I was gonna have to head home (and home was only about 200 yards away...) but I stretched it and said a prayer and away I went.  At about the 2 mile mark - I noticed that I was cruising but I thought I would slow down later in the run (God love the taper!).  But by mile three - I was averaging 8:57 which is a number I haven't seen for a while - not since HS... I was faster then but so much slower during the last 20 years.  At four miles I decided to go for it... The HIM is in 9 days but lets see how hard I can push it.  At 5 miles - I started to grind but despite having a pretty steep uphill - I finished the 10K strong - 56:02.  I race a faster since mile than miles 4 or 5.  A 7 minute improvement on my previous PR and a more than 10% improvement since June.

I was so spent I almost passed out on main street - not good... but I regrouped and jogged home - happier than HELL.  Sore, but happier than hell.

To celebrate - I joined friends for a beer tasting.  The only beers we tried tonight that we thought might make it up into Canada was the Ayinger Marzen (incredible) and the Smuttynose Octoberfest. (too many spices)  We tried over 10 beers - some were damn good but you'd have to make a pilgrimage.  Speaking of pilgrimage - I was surprised KB didn't make his way out here since he has such a special place in his heart for fruit beers.

Gonna take it really easy between now and next Saturday.  Gonna head down to Delaware for a NASCAR race with my son.  There has to be a brewery between here and there.

Cynthia

I tripple dog dare you.  I ran a marathon 4 yrs ago after watching Terra Costa and the crew finish marathons on the Bigges Loser.  I think you can do it.  The intensities of workouts should be slow and easy.  The goal is to get to the line injury free and finish a HIM?  You can do this.

I've never been more motivated in my life.  Love it.  I can't wait for my 8 miler on Saturday.  Great effort David.  There is no chance you'll be drinking warm coors come HIM day.  Way to go.

WTH.  My best friend that brews great beers (his imperial ipa was the Best brew to cross my lips) swears to NEVER mix fruit and beer in the same brew.  I'm a man who likes to listen to good advice, and have honestly never mixed fruit and beer together, sacriliege.Laughing

Has to be.  Keep the intensity the same this week relative to intensities of your workouts in previous weeks, but continue to decrease volumes of workouts by 30%.  Your doing great.  Next week is a great rest week.

It's totally in your wheelhouse!  While 7 weeks is a pretty quick prep time - you current level of fitness will get you to the finish line without any problems... The real question - what beer will you have to celebrate the assured victory?  BTW - which magazine did you get?

Kevin - huge fan of the biggest loser and Terra Costa may just be the toughest person to ever appear on that show.  She's an animal and doing IM's now...

Kevin - thanks for the encouragement and advice... Question about intensity: I've read that people should "keep the same intensity but cut back on the volume" but how far does that go? Intensity wise - I feel like I've really been pushing it not only because I have more energy but because I see it as my last chance to gain a little speed.  I think the physical gains are minimal - but the psychological gains have been huge this week.  But while I'm frickin' pumped to have run so fast, I feel like I might have pushed it a little too hard.  Thoughts?
