karen26.2 - 2013-02-15 3:11 PM Kelly - I think I should take fish oil if its supposed to help with inflation. Any particular brand you recommend that's better than others? Capsule or liquid?

One more thought (and Scott can probably speak to this better than I can) -- There are very few supplements that are actually proven to do good (most supplements and vitamins just create very expensive pee) the few that are proven to be effective are fish oil, beta alanine, creatine (but its not super useful for triathlon) and caffeine.

Yah i wonder about a lot of things I've taken in the past. Like CLA, glucosamine condroiten (sp?), can't think of the others. So omega 3, what about omega 6?

Most Americans get way too much Omega 6 (its in poultry, eggs, nuts, ceareal grains, most vegetable oils)  and are deficient in Omega 3 (which is pretty much exclusively found in cold water fish, flax seeds and chia seeds).  "Better" fish oil supplements have a high Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio.  Bottom line -- you don't need to worry about supplementing Omega 6 and too much Omega 6 is not good for you.

uhcoog - 2013-02-11 7:30 AMLong run done.  Need to get back into foam rolling on a daily basis.  I'm starting to ache like an old man.  Oh wait..........  I am.
You are not old! Geez! Tell me about foam rolling. I've seen it and read about it, but it works? In what ways?

Foam rolling is wonderful.  It breaks up the fascia that covers the muscles and allows for increased blood flow to the muscles, which speeds up healing.

This is the roller I use:

http://www.amazon.com/OPTP-Pro-Foam-Rollers-Marble/dp/B002C9EX14/ref=sr_1_9?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1360603909&sr=1-9

Definately worth while!

I want really sure about this since I didn't understand the benefit, but I just started to read The Melt Method by Sue Hitzmann. Looks like I'll be purchasing a foam roller!

Just finished a 1:45 ride!  Worked late and couldn't get to the pool ... AGAIN (looking for another pool). I left work with a nasty headache to the point where I was sick to my stomach, finished my workout (and a couple Game of Thrones episodes) with no headache and feeling GOOD!

I've got some catching up to do. My training hours have increased this past week and by the time I am finished at night, I am too tired to post. I need to learn how to go to sleep earlier.

Matt - sorry to hear about your foot/knee issue. If possible, can you go get it checked out?

Norma - congratulations on your new pool membership.

Todd - when is your race? Did you replace your Garmin. Did you think about posting something at your gym - to perhaps induce some shame in the perpetrators?

Jen - Congratulations on the new arrival. Very impressed on how you keep up with your training with everying else you have on your plate.

Speaking of new arrivals - we have adopted a 1 yr old Golden/German Shepherd mix who was about to be put down in NC. An anmimal rescue group is brining him up from NC to Maine and we will pick him up on Sunday. So that makes 3 girls, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 5 chickens, and a gecko...I need to learn how to get to sleep earlier.

So something strange happened during my morning swim. I noticed while doing a fist drill set that I wasn't doing my spastic scissor kick but instead was doing a 2 beat flutter kick when I stroked. It kind of kept me moving so I didn't sink. I also did sets with paddles and could feel the water rushing by me when I pulled. By my last 600 free set I was still doing the 1-2 flutter kick and could tell that I was pulling harder. The strange thing was that I did not feel tired when I was done. Yeah!! Maybe I somehow corrected my spaz scissor kick.

Really happy with my week especially considering I did one trainer workout by flashlight and didn't have power for two days. I hit my 7 hours on the trainer and 24 miles running. Swim was only 4000 yards but if I'm going to come up short better there. Super stoked as well because last year when I got to this volume I was usually hanging on intensity wise. I did a 1:10 high intensity trainer workout this morning with a 4 mile run after and still felt fresh.

Kelly I was looking at your logs and that 300 yard X Kick/Pull/Swim workout you did. That's hardcore. I might not have done the kick intervals as quick as you did with fins. Really that is by far my biggest weakness in triathlon with steep hills on the bike being a close second.

Todd- It angers me that someone would take your 910. I would put up a sign and see if someone will do the right thing and return it. Realize I am a highly moral person though and expect the best in people. Did you get another one?

Thanks!  Going today for the first time and looking forward to it even though I don't like pool swimming.

I love people who rescue!  That's a long way for a rescue group to bring a dog.  How wonderful!  Yes, pictures are in order.  I'd like to see a picture of the gecko too!  I love lizards.

When you learn how to get to sleep earlier, tell me how you do it!  Wink

The kick and OWS is interesting.  For long course pool swimming or OWS you really just want a compact 2 beat kick to help maintain body position and to provide some assistance for propulsion.  So generally once triathletes have a steady 2 beat kick down its not worth doing kick sets until you are looking to really ratchet down your swim times.

Note to self - when going for a swim, don't forget your goggles. But not too bad as it's a saline pool. Just don't like to put my face in water unless I have googles. Spent 45 minutes swimming, running in the water for my knee, and uttering a kickboard. Did 20 minutes on a stationary cycle - blah! Also did a 3.3 mile run this morning.

I tore my ankle up playing volleyball years ago and the kick in my right foot just isn't what the one in the left is which is my major issue. I've been spending more time with the flippers on trying to build up strength and flexibility.

So I am looking for a new pool that will have better hours for me to make swims. LA Fitness is in the running and fairly cheap. Questions ... The pool is only 3'6". Can I do flips turns in that depth? Mine suck but the open turns are really hurting my shoulder. Also the LA by my work, would make lunch swims doable is about 80 degrees ... I know I can't do any speed work in that temp, but how much will that drain me otherwise?

Oh yeah! you'll get addicted in no time! Here in NYC I see a lot of variation in how hot the studios get (I have gone to 4 different ones) and I really like the hottest one which runs sometimes 103-106 but once this fall it was 114.  The humidity makes a huge difference too of course and it is more sweaty on rainy days even if it is cold outside.

Recovery week and off day today although it's still snowing here and I'm going to end up with 4-6 inches to shovel. Pretty cold here so it's very powdery. Unlike the last storm where it was wet and heavy as hell. So I expect 40-45 minutes which isn't bad.
