Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() David, there will be no warm coors lite in your future. Just don't over do the intensity and get hurt this close to the race!! Wish I had some buddies to do beer tasting with. A new liquor store opened up here that will sell 32oz and 96oz bulk beer...basically they have 24 taps that you brink your bottle, fill up with beer of your choice. They keep the most popular and rotate the bottom feeders(fruit beers Cynthia, sign up for the Surf city...gives you plenty of time to train and the cost will commit you to training for it. If you want to save some money, I can give the web address of the place we stayed...walking distance to start. Off of VRBO. Nothing fancy but quiet and safe. Kevin, I am not sure what we can do with David and fruit beer problem...maybe there is a fruit beer drinkers anonymous group intervention out there... Has everyone found a cycle trainer yet?? Keep checking used...you will find one! I can send everyone some workouts that I picked up from a tri coach. Finally, September was a record setting month for my running distance and still 2 days to go. Of course with my history of no weekend running....plus I will be at the hockey rinks for 4 hours a day with my kids... My daughter starts with the swim club on Tuesday and this past week my son joined the running club at his school...busy, busy, busy! PS:Darren where are you.... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Qua17 - 2012-09-28 3:41 AM kevinbe - 2012-09-28 12:11 AM Keep up the same intensities in relation to the workout. Your long run intensity is mild compared to your mid range tempo run efforts. taper is just that. a taper of volume and intensity. at this point, start looking at tapering way back on volume, 10 mile run turns to 7, 6 mile run down to 4, etc. same with biking and swimming. Next week, taper way back on intensities as well as volume. 20 min. at each discipline at minimum effort. This is going to allow you to rest up for race day.Qua17 - 2012-09-27 9:23 PM Hell Yes - Top of the Page!!! Great run today... Started out crappy - my knee hurt so much I thought I was gonna have to head home (and home was only about 200 yards away...) but I stretched it and said a prayer and away I went. At about the 2 mile mark - I noticed that I was cruising but I thought I would slow down later in the run (God love the taper!). But by mile three - I was averaging 8:57 which is a number I haven't seen for a while - not since HS... I was faster then but so much slower during the last 20 years. At four miles I decided to go for it... The HIM is in 9 days but lets see how hard I can push it. At 5 miles - I started to grind but despite having a pretty steep uphill - I finished the 10K strong - 56:02. I race a faster since mile than miles 4 or 5. A 7 minute improvement on my previous PR and a more than 10% improvement since June. I've never been more motivated in my life. Love it. I can't wait for my 8 miler on Saturday. Great effort David. There is no chance you'll be drinking warm coors come HIM day. Way to go. I was so spent I almost passed out on main street - not good... but I regrouped and jogged home - happier than HELL. Sore, but happier than hell. To celebrate - I joined friends for a beer tasting. The only beers we tried tonight that we thought might make it up into Canada was the Ayinger Marzen (incredible) and the Smuttynose Octoberfest. (too many spices) We tried over 10 beers - some were damn good but you'd have to make a pilgrimage. Speaking of pilgrimage - I was surprised KB didn't make his way out here since he has such a special place in his heart for fruit beers. WTH. My best friend that brews great beers (his imperial ipa was the Best brew to cross my lips) swears to NEVER mix fruit and beer in the same brew. I'm a man who likes to listen to good advice, and have honestly never mixed fruit and beer together, sacriliege. Gonna take it really easy between now and next Saturday. Gonna head down to Delaware for a NASCAR race with my son. There has to be a brewery between here and there. Has to be. Keep the intensity the same this week relative to intensities of your workouts in previous weeks, but continue to decrease volumes of workouts by 30%. Your doing great. Next week is a great rest week. Kevin - thanks for the encouragement and advice... Question about intensity: I've read that people should "keep the same intensity but cut back on the volume" but how far does that go? Intensity wise - I feel like I've really been pushing it not only because I have more energy but because I see it as my last chance to gain a little speed. I think the physical gains are minimal - but the psychological gains have been huge this week. But while I'm frickin' pumped to have run so fast, I feel like I might have pushed it a little too hard. Thoughts? |

Even though you may think that fruit beers are just what women drink (this is not what I think) - fruit beers have an incredible history. Before you go all beer snob on me - consider this - people have been making beer with fruit long than they have used hops... by 2000-3000 years. Fruit was the ORIGINAL preservative in beer - it was the hops of beer back in the days of the pharoahs and Jesus. Brewers used to use it not only to preserve the beer but also because they thought it attracted yeast. There are great fruit beers out there. 5 star quality... Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey guys, Sorry for being MIA. I don't know. I am still dealing with this silly race. It is just a race but it seems to have crawled right up inside me and won't leave. That's all I have right now. Lame. Although I have drank some beers too, although nothing new, so, oh well. Had a killer September, lots of bike miles. Did 2 straight weeks on my bike going to work, so that is killer. Really took it out of me. Feeling a little weak, so I went on the vitamins and minerals. A smarter person may take a day or 2 off but I only got 10 days until holidays so I am going to push on through. Found a new race to do, it is just a fun run on October 27, a 50k though, so lots and lots of fun. |

Take it easy and you will be fine.kevinbe - 2012-09-27 11:57 PM SportzVision - 2012-09-27 12:37 PM I tripple dog dare you. I ran a marathon 4 yrs ago after watching Terra Costa and the crew finish marathons on the Bigges Loser. I think you can do it. The intensities of workouts should be slow and easy. The goal is to get to the line injury free and finish a HIM? You can do this.My Triathlete magazine came in the mail yesterday, gwad I love when that happens! One of the articles was a seven week half mary training program. Stepping out of my box I think I am giving it a whirl this fall...kinda double dog daring myself. I really think I need something different and this plan still includes a swim and bike. Whatta ya think? Cynthia It's totally in your wheelhouse! While 7 weeks is a pretty quick prep time - you current level of fitness will get you to the finish line without any problems... The real question - what beer will you have to celebrate the assured victory? BTW - which magazine did you get? Kevin - huge fan of the biggest loser and Terra Costa may just be the toughest person to ever appear on that show. She's an animal and doing IM's now... DH - Congrats on 4400 posts! Outstanding consistancy |

DH - Take all the time you need to get your head wrapped around your experience earlier this year. I wish I had the words to take the pain and disappointment away. I will point out that you might be the only person I know who has ever written or uttered the following words: it is just a fun run on October 27, a 50k though, so lots and lots of fun. For the record - you will be the barometer by which I compare everyone else distance... Just the other day, I was talking to a friend about the iron man and mentioned that the distance paled in comparison to your amazing accomplishment. |
