In May with the sprint it was my back.  In July with the oly it my ribs and now in October it's my nuts.  After not feeling well since Thursday - I made it to the doctor today and got my money's worth.  After a fun 15 minutes, he told me that I had prostatitis and he proscribed bractrum... Swell.  I love my doctor - he does tris as well and he promises me that I should be back to 100% by Saturday.  I can not wait...

Skipped working out today but will try to fit in some transition work tomorrow.  It's 8:30 and I'm heading to bed.

I'll figure out my goals for the month and will post tomorrow.

My Triathlete magazine came in the mail yesterday, gwad I love when that happens! One of the articles was a seven week half mary training program.  Stepping out of my box I think I am giving it a whirl this fall...kinda double dog daring myself. I really think I need something different and this plan still includes a swim and bike.

Whatta ya think?

Cynthia

I tripple dog dare you.  I ran a marathon 4 yrs ago after watching Terra Costa and the crew finish marathons on the Bigges Loser.  I think you can do it.  The intensities of workouts should be slow and easy.  The goal is to get to the line injury free and finish a HIM?  You can do this.

It's totally in your wheelhouse!  While 7 weeks is a pretty quick prep time - you current level of fitness will get you to the finish line without any problems... The real question - what beer will you have to celebrate the assured victory?  BTW - which magazine did you get?

Kevin - huge fan of the biggest loser and Terra Costa may just be the toughest person to ever appear on that show.  She's an animal and doing IM's now...

I think it is a great idea too. Take it easy and you will be fine.

DH - Congrats on 4400 posts!  Outstanding consistancy

Ha, I suppose it is an accomplishment,

I would like to thank the academy.....

BigDH - 2012-10-01 3:12 PM hey guys, Sorry for being MIA. I don't know. I am still dealing with this silly race. It is just a race but it seems to have crawled right up inside me and won't leave. That's all I have right now. Lame. Although I have drank some beers too, although nothing new, so, oh well. Had a killer September, lots of bike miles. Did 2 straight weeks on my bike going to work, so that is killer. Really took it out of me. Feeling a little weak, so I went on the vitamins and minerals. A smarter person may take a day or 2 off but I only got 10 days until holidays so I am going to push on through. Found a new race to do, it is just a fun run on October 27, a 50k though, so lots and lots of fun.

DH - Take all the time you need to get your head wrapped around your experience earlier this year.  I wish I had the words to take the pain and disappointment away.

I will point out that you might be the only person I know who has ever written or uttered the following words:  it is just a fun run on October 27, a 50k though, so lots and lots of fun.  For the record - you will be the barometer by which I compare everyone else distance...  Just the other day, I was talking to a friend about the iron man and mentioned that the distance paled in comparison to your amazing accomplishment.

Yeah, I agree, do what you have to do to get through it...perhaps you should sign up for the ultra triathlon in Penticton for fun...Laughing it only takes three days to complete...

3-day, 514.5 kilometre (320 mile) Individual Ultra-endurance Event

10k swim(6.2miles)

275.4km bike(171.4miles)lots of hills.

84.3km run(52.4 miles)double marathon

There is a century ride this Saturday and then I will start training for the half next week.  Did nothing all weekend...it was, hmmm a recovery weekend...don't ask...Friday night was beyond the beyond!  Oooh weee!  I didn't just fall off the wagon I swan dived off of the wagon then belly flopped!

Darren, it seems as though you are grieving...go ahead and grieve you lost something that was important to you...if you were Jewish you could sit shivah.  But after you grieve tell us what you are going to do about it. Are you going to find a new goal and focus? Are you going to attempt this endurance race again? Only you know what will heal you. Find it, focus on it and heal.  Easier said than done but we are all here for you!

Yeah you are right. I mean it is just a race though. I keep on looking forward to the time I can laugh about it. It all feels at once to be completely ridiculous and completely rational. Talking about it helps, so thanks for listening.

What a crazy day at work yesterday, one of my students had a crazy guy stalking her and headed our way with a gun...he was a no show here but they did arrest him at her house...spent the afternoon with her at the court house filing the restraining order.  Ok, my kid made me do my strength training last night and now I am eternally grateful. Ran 3 miles on the treadmill and lifted weights.  This morning I was at the Core class despite my best efforts to talk myself out of it.  But now my lower back is hurting soooo badly.  Maybe that is a sign I had to core strength to work with this morning!  Ice, ibuprofen and a Recovery Rockstar should do the trick.

DH - another thought for you to ponder... You wrote in your last post that "it is just a race" and that it feels "all at once to be completely ridiculous..."  I think part of the healing process for you is going to be to 1) Figure out what's clearly bothering you.  At least to me - its seems like your experience was more than "just a race" and you need to get a better handle on what about the experience is really troubling you.  Then, 2) be willing to accept your feeling and treat them and you with compassion.  Its a tough time for you right now (maybe not so tough having bought a new pair of shoes) and the race and the result really affected you.  Spend a little time loving yourself... you deserve it.

yeah, no, I know what you are saying. I am over it, again for the time being.

NEver got the shoes, forgot I had a lunch meeting so rushed out with 50 minutes for a run so blased out 14 450 repeats, which was awesome. I call it accidental intervals.

Still feeling like crap.  Dr. says I should be feeling better by now but he won't start me on a new antibiotic until I finish up with this one...

Question - how much is this issue with my insides and this lack of activity going to affect me?

I think it's pshychological as in the effect you allow it to effect you from a race preparedness standpoint.  These last days are not going to gain you physical gains, only little things like transition practice and such.  The work you've put in is strong, and you will not lose any of that.  The medicine should kick in and you should be ready to go physically by race day.  This is a plus, you will get lots of rest and be full of energy and ready to race.

I've had that prosteletitus (sp).  mine had been misdiagnosed as a hernia three seperate occaisions by 3 hacks until I went to the er and told the guy I'd been diagnosed with a hernia.  after 5 min. of him downstairs (what seemed like an hour), he looked at me and said I'd had prosteletitus.  The pills healed it up in a week or so.  fwiw

Man that sucks. I don't know. I mean it is an energy level thing more than anything. You can race sick, as long as your energy level is high due to being well rested. But if your body is sucking energy to get better then you are running at less than 100 percent. If you also are suffering physically then that will of course effect your performance.

That really sucks. I don't know man. If you are better then great. But if you aren't, do your best but give yourself permission to throw in the towel whenever, like after the first 100 meters of the swim if you have to. Being sick on race day is a bit like being sick at Disneyland, you can still have an okay time if you adjust your expectations.

2.5 days until the race and the pain is getting better but I still feel like crap.  I'm still running a fever and I'm tired...  But F it... I'm gonna do this thing.  I am watching last years ironman race and the story about a woman who had trained and run in an IM while battling stage 4 cancer got me fired up.  I promised you and myself that I would make it to that line and I will keep that promise.  Cue the Al Trautwig soundtrack in my head.  No Coors lite for me...

Another challenge - cold, rainy weather... The high will be 50 and the low will be around 40.  So the question is: how will I stay warm?  Here's my plan... Prerace, I will wait as long as I can before taking of my clothes and getting into my wetsuit.  I will go with bike shorts under the wetsuit and leave the long sleeve bike shirt in T!.  I'll wear a sweatshirt and a hat while I wait for my wave.  I will also cover up my towel, bike and sweat shirt and bike shoes with a garbage bag. Any suggestions?

Challenge #2- nutrition... Here's' the plan developed during training.  Wakeup - oatmeal with banana and blueberries.  Drain a waterbottle.  Small coffee on the way to the race. Gel with caffeine before the swim.  Hop on the bike and wolf down a protein bar.  Hour 1 Gel Blocks, Hour 2 Gel Blocks, Hour 3 Clif Bar.  On the run, gel every 30-45 minutes based upon how my stomach feels.  THoughts?

Finally - Strategy... I think I need to start out slow in the swim and get into a rhythm.  at the half way point, speed up so I'm pushing at a level I can maintain for 20 minutes.  All I have to do is finish the mile swim in 50 minutes and I'll be all set.  Should be no problem.  On the bike, I'm gonna start out slow.  13 miles an hour for the first 14 miles.  14 mph on the second 14 miles. 15 on the from mile 28-42, and if I'm feeling strong, I'm gonna shoot for 17 on the final leg.  I'm gonna try to hold myself to this with the hope that I'll have a little extra energy on the run.  I'm gonna try to run/walk 13 minute miles for the for the first 4 miles, 12 minute miles on the next 3, 11 minute miles for 8, 9, 10, 11, and try to hit 9 minute miles as I race towards a cold beer.  Did I mention they have a beer garden?

Ok - so that's the plan.  I'd love some thoughts.  Thanks for your help and for holding me accountable.

dude, if you are sick and do this in 50 degree weather you are nuts. I mean I like your moxie and you probably won't die but still......

I say your biggest challenge is staying warm on the bike and run. Staying warm in a wetsuit isn't too too bad. On the bike in the rain with a wind, you got to find a pace that keeps that heart pumping that hot blood around your body or you will start shivering and fall in the ditch. Thankfully, due to windchill factors, you won't want to go too fast, which is good, because it will save you energy for the run where you also have to keep warm. Best to keep running as it burns more fuel, start walking and you start shivering. Although, I suppose on the run you can bundle up a bit better.

I would consider going with tights for the bike and the run. I know I know, who wants to wear tights, but the thing is, if there is no sun out due to clouds it could be 60 degrees out and you probably would feel fine in tights and if it is colder you will feel that much better. If there is sun, I mean I don't know.

If it is me, and I am feeling that crappy, I would have on two shirts for the bike ride, long sleeve under, short sleeve over, and tights and probably consider a jacket for the run (because I think you won't be working as hard on the run, ahem walk, as you do on the bike so you may need to stay warmer). And you know what, if you are too hot on the bike, just ditch a shirt at an aid station.

Anyways, that is me, and I wear spandex shorts and short sleeves down to -5C on a sunny day.

Good luck! Are you taking any probiotics? They tend to offset belly impacts of antibiotics. It's so funny you packed Dale's Pale Ale. I pass the brewery on most of my runs. They have a great tasting room bar. Sorry I joined and dropped off the planet. One of the guys I work with took a new job so I've been stuck trying to do two jobs. I've been getting in some small workouts. Good news is the new guy starts Monday so after a few weeks of training I should get my life back :-) Oh and I had a dogfish brown ale the other night to wind down that was quite tasty.
