dammit a trip to the doctor is called for - coughing up lord knows what, not pretty that's for sure!

Gossipy swim was good, we got through 2.5km every other lane did 3km except the speedy lane who did 3.5km - wow.

Channel news, conditions in the Channel worsened and pilot abandoned attempt, too choppy too risky.  Such a shame when you've worked so hard.  But like all things getting to the start is the hardest part.  Paul will be back next year I'm sure for another go.  Incidentally it's been the worst year for failed attempts due to weather!

Now Richie and Robbie are off crossing around the 12th August.  Fingers crossed we get one success.  I certainly have a heap more respect for Coach Johnny now - swoon.

Wow, crazy that is was due to the pilot!!!

I think it just means the pilot made the call from his (I only know of one female pilot, a former Channel swimmer herself) point of view. I'm sure nobody disagreed, and in any case, you have to have a pilot boat as a requirement.

Channel Swim Update - Grant Siedle was pulled from the water after 11 hours.  The cold and the tides outdid him.

He is well, healthy just cold.  And he'll be back for another attempt next year!

Today Paul Hoffmann a friend is attempting his crossing.  My money is on Paul achieving the unachievable!

incidentally first crossing coach Johnny attempted at the age of 18 ended in CPR - he got hypothermia and lost consciousness, his coach (olympic champion Dawn Fraser).  It is not a challenge for the faint hearted and if you have not gained enough weight and fat you will succumb to the cold.

so today I will not be doing much work - I will tracking the boat Gallivant across the Channel!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone - cold is still there, I feel less feverish though!  If my throat doesn't improve I will go to the doctor tomorrow.

Thank goodness he is ok! I can't believe they aren't allowed to wear wet suits! Who makes up that rule?  HOw is it possible for someone to be in cold water for almost half a day?  I can't wrap my head around this one.  More so than the thought of swimming and biking for miles and miles BEFORE starting a marathon (considering I've tried to barely stand the day before a marathon).

It's not supposed to be easy, living with history sometimes makes you realise how soft we have become. Back when it was first done, wetsuits had not been invented. We should not make it easier just to make people happy. If you think you can hack it, put your name down, if not, there are plenty of other challenges not involving crazy amounts of swimming in cold water.

Yowza, that's a passionate response! Channel swimming must have more meaning to you Brits Wink I just figured if Ironmen can wear wetsuits, why not a Channel swimmer? I mean, that's still crazy hella hard and insane even WITH a wetsuit.  I, for one, can't even imagine swimming for an hour straight...let along eating from a pole in a freezing ocean-like expanse!

Not meant to be offensive, just strongly held view. I can see your point also, it's just not how it's done across the channel

HA! Offensive. HAHAHA. Nice try.

I'm still thinking about eating from a pole.

You can eat from a hose, too. It pumps out liquid nutrition because it's too hard to suck it out of something that long.

So some sport scientists studied body metrics of competitive open-water swimmers roundabout 2003, 2004 and this is what they came up with for U.S. females: (damn that formatting did not come out AT ALL ... lemme see ... )

TABLE 4. ANTHROPOMETRIC PARAMETERS FOR OPEN WATER SWIMMERS*

FEMALES: US

HEIGHT, CM                        168.3 ± 2.8
WEIGHT, KG                        63.5 ± 5.8
PERCENT MUSCLE MASS       30.7 ± 3.8
PERCENT SKELETAL MASS     8.4 ± 0.7
BODY FAT, %                      22.8 ± 2.3

So the AVERAGE of U.S. female competitive OWSers is 23%.

That makes me feel much better. And with the standard deviation at 2.3, there's a few significantly above that.

That's a timely subject Yanti as I just rea this:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/public-pushes-back-against-fat-comments-aussie-swimmer-191640600--oly.html

Yeah, let's focus on the real important stuff, like what swimmers look like as opposed to their performance.

this is so typical of the Australian media, Liesl Jones is one of our all time great athletes - and an unflattering shot got her more media coverage than a Gold medal ever will.  outrageous.  Shameful.

Unfortunately it's not just Australia.  The US media is more about body shape than substance. It's terrible.  They haven't gotten the memo that healthy is the new skinny.

Swimmer can do whatever s/he wants but it won't be recorded as an official crossing.

It's probably happened that a pilot and swimmer or coach/medic/official had a disagreement, but it would be very rare. The pilots themselves have to be registered with the Channel Swimming Association ... no such thing as just a guy with a boat puttering alongside.

And I assume that the swimmer and pilot work as a team and are on the same page in general so when things get tough and someone has to make a call it is them rather than the swimmer who is probably not thinking clearly anyway.

Good afternoon (here) all!

We are camping near Garden of the Gods (6000 feet) for four days and then moving on up to 7000-8000 feet near Pikes Peak (14,100 feet) for four more days. I think we're going to spring for the cog railroad trip up the mountain.

The elevation is getting to me. Really not feeling well. I'm trying to keep everyone hydrated and rested. I'm not sure what else to do. I'm off to research that after I type this.

We'll have internet here because we are in Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs, but once we head up, we won't have it. I'm hoping to get some good workouts in while we're here, but admittedly, most of what I'll be doing is either hiking or biking with the family. We brought our bikes plus Jayson's tag-a-long. (Thankfully we brought our bikes -- I wrote about it in my log for yesterday.)

I feel like such a wimp. I hope I feel better tomorrow. :-( Still, the kids and I are going to go swimming here in a few minutes.

No, it wasn't offensive, it was just such a strong reaction.  I honestly have no clue about this channel swimming thing, all new to me, but it seems like it's a big thing in UK. (I mean, obvi it's a BIG deal to do it - even try it! - but I'm referring to lay people having an opinion about the rules)

Indeed. There's also an official Observer and usually a few other people on the boat. Pilots generally call because of weather; they are all very seasoned Channel crossers and really understand the peculiarities of the conditions.

That is a beautiful area Felicia! I would absolutely recommend the cog if you're considering it.  Seven Falls is incredible as well but is a LOT of stairs.  As for the altitude sickness, hopefully you'll acclimate pretty quickly.  Good thing you are "lower" for a few days before you do the 14ers.

A wimp??? Ahem, I don't think so!!!! Elevation is tough!!

PS "No crying. It's hiking, and you're going to fall. You're tough enough to take it." I love it!!!

Heh, tried it. Realized it wasn't really my thing. Oh! nm.

i just spit diet coke on the computer.  thx alot !

That is a beautiful area Felicia! I would absolutely recommend the cog if you're considering it.  Seven Falls is incredible as well but is a LOT of stairs.  As for the altitude sickness, hopefully you'll acclimate pretty quickly.  Good thing you are "lower" for a few days before you do the 14ers.

x2! Glad you checked in. And you will take lots of pretty pictures?

I lived at ~7000ft elevation for a year ... people would come up and visit and get kinda queasy. Hydration (much more than usual) is a good idea, taking it easy is a good idea, light/digestible fare is a good idea.

Don't know how you got it by the mods, i get edited frequently, but i'm glad you did. Slipped in so casually, it was beautiful.

Amazing how the conversation started about Grant abandoning his cross channel attempt.

By the way, did you spit?

HAHAHAHA

Does the Olympic Games logo drive anybody else crazy? Like you want to put the broken bits together to make something sensible, like, I don't know, a square?

ME! OMG ME! It's so...1990s. I am not sure what is worse, the logo or the mascots. Vancouver did the mascots RIGHT. I have my own quatchi sitting on my couch, in fact.

I LOVED the Vancouver mascots!  They were so cute. The Beijing ones were also a little strange.

It's interesting to me how opinions change after the fact!  Many in the media HATED the mascots initially, said the Vancouver Games were shaping up (before they had even started) to be the WORST games ever.  Now the mascots were great, and they were up among the best games ever!!  I can tell you, I volunteered and had a blast.  One of the best experiences of my life.  (And I only just realized that the logo for London was the year.  I didn't look too hard, to be honest, but it should not be difficult to pick out what a logo means...)

Best games ever, solely because of this:

Go Canada!

Two of those chicks actually look like you. The one on the left, and the one on the right.

Is that just because those are the two that are clearly obnoxiously drunk and don't give a sh*t.

That, and the other two are pretty.
