Bab's hit it pretty much on the head. The first time you stick your face in water that cold, it will take your breath away. It happens to everybody, and all the other racers will have it too.

It is going to happen. Just know it, expect it and you can deal with it. Get in the water before your wave. Do what Babs said. Let your face get used to it. Do some breast stroke or something else so you get your breath back. Do a few strokes of freestyle, and if need be breast stroke again. Pretty soon you will get used to it, and be able to swim normally.

Good thing you are learning this now rather than race day.

My wife and I participated in the Great Urban race in Philadelphia PA today. It was awesome if this race or others like it comes to a city near you go and do it. Great fun and a good excuse to train outside of the box. We ended up running a few miles total but had the opportunity to run probably 4-5 but we were with some less athletic folks and we were working as a team.

I have posted some more pics in a photo album on this site under The Great Urban Race Philly '08.

Am I ate up with it or what?

Saturday evening our band was playing at local VFW.  I set my drums up, went home and ran 30 minutes.  showered and got dressed. My wife who is usually my DD didn't come up this weekend, so I put on my boots and cowboy hat and get on my mountain bike and ride appprox 2 miles through trails to VFW.  Got a lot of comments.

No we got a three page list of clues and had to figure out what location that the clue was talking about and then get there and take digital pic of my team (my wife and I) in front of the location in the clue. There were 12 items and 2 were mandatory of the other 10 you had to do 9. Any that you got wrong or skipped you were panelized 30 min and the top 25 teams qualify for the national championship in Las Vegas at the end of the year. First place was $300 for this race and first place at the national championship is $10,000.

It's a bit warm out there! I was feeling sorry for myself about the heat here and looked at a friend from AZ's training blog...103 today. Thanks for checking in on me and the inspires. Volunteering for a race is good karma and a workout!

Captain Triathosuction rules the adventure race! Sounds like a fun event.

Yikes 97 for you today. I graduated from Arizona State in Phoenix. First job was in Houston.

Would much rather have 103 in Phoenix than 97 in Texas. Humidity.

Smart of you to swim today.

Nice workout today, Dwayne.

Oh, and glad to help out, with reminding you about the Texas humidity. I am just a giver, trying to help y'all out.

Hour of death spin ( spin class) at 6 am, for me today.

And for my friend Dwayne, high for today is predicted to be 70 degrees, but the beach is a 15 minute bike ride from my house.

Hey y'all, check out my blog. I did a race this weekend and the report is up. It was my 2nd tri. The beauty of being a beginner is that it is all new and everything's an improvement, right? This was my first OWS race experience, and though it was kind of ugly, my goal was to suvive and that I did.

Hope you all are doing great.

Great Job Babs! Very nice for your 2nd race.  Isn't that OWS a different kind of swim? It looks like your training has really prepared you for your season. Keep up the good work. I'm jealous of your weather. I used to go to horse shows in Culpepper. what a great place to ride bikes!

Very nice race Babs! OWS is tough the first few times and you did it well.

I bet you learned trying to put dry clothes on over damp skin is really tough. No matter how much you towel off the skin stays damp, and it is just really hard to pull clothes on.

Click on Control Panel and then select Edit your training settings on the right. In the menu bar that comes up there is a goals tab.

If you want to get crafty and do colors like mine or anything else you can use html.

Hi Guy's:

Need some motivation and advice. How have you found the best way to fit in training between work, kids, home? I'm struggling with juggleing. Any advice?

Thanks, Danielle

Hey Danielle. It can be tough!

Here's how I get 8-12 hours per week with minimal disruption to family time:

1. I'm an early bird. I'm ready to start training at 5 a.m., and can go for up to 90 minutes before my wife & son are awake. One weekend day is my "long" day of up to 4 hours, but I still start early so that I'm done early.

2. I use a trainer. No travel, no commute. At 5 a.m. I step out into the garage and am ready to ride. Dark, cold, wet, no excuses.

3. Ditto the above if you have a treadmill.

4. Barring a treadmill & trainer, a membership to a close-by gym with spin bikes & treadmills will also work.

5. Bricks. You're already at the pool, go ahead and run 20'-30' before hitting the shower. Or bike/run to the pool. Hit the spin bike for 30', then hop on the treadmill for 20' (adjust all these minutes to what's practical for you at this point in time).

6. Incorporate the family: I've had my wife tow my son on the bike while I ran, used to do a lot of running with a baby-jogger, etc...

The important part is establishing a routine. For me, the way to ensure that my routine wasn't getting constantly disrupted was to do it first thing in the morning.

Set up the time you want to work out per week, and the time you will do it. It doesn't have to be a lot. I had fun racing sprints, duathlons, and olys off of 4 workouts per week: 3 bike/run bricks and 1 swim/bike brick, all around 6 hours per week.
