Subject: Sick

Yesterday was a lot of fun for training.  I did a 25K ride in the morning and about 5.5k with my running club last night. (<6 min/K pace)

Starting feeling blah around 9 pm.

Woke up this morning with no energy, a sore throat and no way to call in sick today.  I am taking tomorrow off and plan to be in bed by 4:30 pm today.

Cry

EDIT:  I really dislike the design of these emoticons.

I wrote a long letter to the group but was distracted by my kids and didn't submitt is so I will have to try & remember what I wrote.

Tim - Great job on your 5k! You beat your goal time & that is what matters! You beat my butt if I ran it with you!

Rob - I like the pictures. What is the temp of Lake Erie this time of year. I am pretty lucky b/c I really only need a wetsuit during the beginning of the season and that is why I don't own one. I am still chicken to do the Escape from Alcatraz in San Francisco because of the swim.

Gloria & Tracy - My advice for your first tri is to take each part of it and Go For It! In the swim I don't save anything I just go b/c you are not going to really use your arms again and it is like a warm up for the legs. The bike I go out strong to keep the momentum and keep it going. This is when I eat my Gu (beginning of ride) & try & stay hydrated. I tape Gu/gel on my handle bars (but be careful they have fallen off). Have extras. In the run, I just give it my all (I'm worst at the run.) I have, sometimes, even walk some parts if I have to. Encourage others, stay positive. Talk to other. Have Fun!!!! I can't wait to see your race reports. Also it is your first one so you can only get better from here!!

Well I have a NEW BIKE! I took out the Cervelo Team Soloist to hills in a near by town and went faster up them than I ever had!! I love it, I love it! I will try get a picture of it. I also purchased new peddles & bought my first tri shoe 50%off Next week I am going 2 the bike shop to get it fit for tri's!! I will get areobars. I don't know anything about them except it is very different steering. Any advice in this area would be appreciated.

Happily Training,
Kristina

Kristina,

Congrats on the new purchase - I've seen your model of bike, and they are very sweet. For aerobars, I will give the opinion given to me my the guy who did my bike fitting. Profile GT Jammers. These bars are specifically designed to be put on a road bike, and not mess up your position - they don't extend any further than your brake hoods.

It's the only advice I can give, but I'll add that so far I like mine and am comfortable on them, though it did take some getting used to, and my neck definetly had some pain (that did subside after the first few rides).

Not sure if you tried to post the pic, but can't wait to see it. (big blank space)

Hi gang, I'm back! Looks like there has been lots of the activity on this thread which is great! Being away for a week means insanity at the office trying to catch up on everything and lots of laundry at home so I haven't had a chance to read the posts yet, but I will.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi, so "hi!"

Hi All
Kristina, thanks for the advise on my first Tri it will come in handy ! Congrats on the bike too. I love my new Raleigh compared to my Electra Cruiser it's so much faster.
The race director for the tri just sent out a mass email to everyone stating that the swim portion of the race is canceled due to lack of water in our "lake" aka large gravel pit. It normally fills with sub water and a feeder canal but this year they are slow to do so. I am surprised with the heavy winter we had and the flood watches in the area due to the sudden warmer temps and now rain....it will probably be filled by the next weekend.
I am bummed out since I have trained hard for all 3 events and really wanted to see how I would do in them. The RD's plan now is to have the sprint racers go 2 miles than transition to the bike/run parts of the race as planned. I guess I will take that portion of the race kind of easy so I can do the other two (bike/run) portions stronger...any advise on that ?
I guess I'll quit feeling sorry for myself, its amazing how far I have come in a year...last year's first 5K I was excited to finish in just barely under an hour at 59 min., the training for the Tri has been a fun experience for me I'll have  to wait to earn my title of triathlete now.
Next one in the area is in July, swim in the dam , the bike part has a lot of

Gloria, I am really bummed out for you!  This upcoming race will be good practice and incentive to enter that July race.  We'll be cheering you on virtually!

Kristina, thanks for the advice of 'going for it'.  I might have considered holding something back, especially in the bike portion where I obviously lack the road experience but now I intend to give it everything I've got.  And you're right, it will just get better from here!

Tracy

eta - this is my ride!  My hubby suggested we name her 'Testarossa'... (wishful thinking to consider my riding like racing a Ferrari!!

Gloria - sorry to see that the swim go cancelled. On the bright side, you'll have the title "Duathlete" after this weekend, and then can add "Triathlete" just a little bit later.

Tracy - nice set of wheels.

Stuck in the hotel again, but I thought I'd share a little project I did. I went down to the fabric shop and purchased some elastic cord and plastic cord locks. .79 for 3 feet of the cord (about a metre for our canadian friends eh!) and .25 a piece for the cord locks. I made some EZ laces!

Tried them out on the treadmill for an hour this morning and I'm really happy with them. Their quick to get on and off and as secure as my regular shoe laces. Not bad for $1.29. Now I have to convince my wife that since I saved so much on easy laces, I can now start shopping for more tri stuff!

You did good!  I went the lazy/expensive route and bought Yankz.  You deserve the extra tri stuff for your efforts!!

Timmeh - another comment for nice ride. Looks pretty sweet - you just need to keep it looking as good as the pic!! Nice job on the laces - I'm with Tracy in that I went the expensive route. What's more, I didn't really like the feel and put my default laces back in. I'll need to look into changing that again and giving them another try. Since everyone is posting pics of their bikes, I'll try and add one later on tonight.

Just thought I'd share a PB for me today. Ran 10K at lunch, and was feeling pretty good after the first 2K, so decided to push the pace and ran it in just under 46 minutes. Really happy with the run, but I had to max out my HR - but I guess that's what you're supposed to do. Now I want to go even faster, just need to learn how. If anyone is interested the laps are posted in my logs (I love my Garmin). I'm going to add 2 new long term goals - sub 20:00 5K and sub 40:00 10K.

I'm going to try and ride tomorrow night, and then do one more longish ride on the weekend. After that I'm going to scale things back heading into next week, as it's almost race time. I can't believe how nervous I am.

Hope everyone had an equally good day today.

Okay, I'm all caught up on the posts. So much awesome stuff has happened to everyone. Lots of PRs. How fantastic! Congratulations to all.

Kristina, welcome to the Cervelo family. I love my Cervelo. I've had my P2SL for a year now (had a Trek road bike before) and each and every time I get on it, it puts a smile on my face. Love that bike!

So last week I was away in Grand Cayman on business. I was able to squeeze in at least a short run or swim (in the ocean...awesome!) every day but wasn't able to do any long runs or any biking due to work. Oh well. It was nice being somewhere warm. The runs where tough though. I would head out at 6:30 or 7:00am and could only muster a 45 minute run. It was so hot (about 110F with the humidity) that despide a slow pace I couldn't keep my heart rate down. When I was done I was literally on the verge of throwing up. It was not a good feeling at all but did it anyway in hopes that it would be good for me

Well this week I'm back in Toronto, where's it's been pretty chilly and I'm desperately trying to catch up on all the work that I missed. I've been feeling incredibly tired too which is odd. Yesteday I only managed to run for 30 minutes and today I did nothing. This is not normal for me. Sure hope I'm not coming down with anything.

Okay, so who's doing what this weekend?

I've got a long ride and swim planned for Saturday and a very short ride on Sunday. Who's racing?

Caius - I have a sprint on Monday and I am absolutely looking forward to it!  200 m pool / 8.5 mile bike / 2 mi run.   This is my first sprint and I can't wait for it!

Wow, new bike!  New bikes rock!

I'm planning on swimming in Kelso on Saturday (it was freeeeezing last week), followed by a ride right after - not sure if I'm going to ride the Milton course or not. May try to squeeze in a run on Sunday.

Missed my swim this morning, didn't even hear the alarm go off.

Welcome back Caius!  If weather permits this weekend I want to ride my actual race course around the University of Calgary.

Good luck to Gloria and Terry this weekend.

Congrats to Squishy on those PR's!  Very impressive.  I've never personally seen a 10K below 50 minutes.  Keep up the great work!

Kristina and Terry stay warm for us.  I don't know about Timmeh's weather but I think the weather in Western and Eastern Canada and probably even Idaho is not very pleasant right now.  Here's hoping Idaho warms up for you, Gloria!

Tracy

Planning a brick work out tomorrow morning and my first open water swim on saturday, weather permitting.

Invigilator - Hope you feel better soon! My wife and daughter both have colds. I think they are starting to take it personally that I have been leaving a little bit of extra space between my self and them. I just don't want to come down sick right before my first race.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! Have fun!!!

I'm with Tracy, in that I may try and ride the race course this Saturday, but will definetly be swimming in the lake. Had a good swim tonight (didn't get out on the bike - again), so I'm hoping that translates to a good open water swim this weekend.

Best of luck int he races this weekend everyone - looks like we'll all ahve done a race by the end of next week!!

The surges of "no energy" are subsiding, but I am incredibly congested now.  It feels like forever since I have done anything.  I hope I will be able to do the 5K this Sunday, but at this pace, I know I will be okay for the Tri next Saturday.

Did you sign up for Milton already? I still haven't. Just can't seem to get the courage to sign up for it given the chilly weather. Just can't imagine swimming in the chilly water only to come out wet and hop on a bike. I'm going to play it by ear and see how it goes. If the weather will be 20+ then I will likely be there. Otherwise...probably not.
