Have you ever tried Speedplay pedals? I was having knee pain a few years ago and made the switch, and it has been great. They give you a lot more movement side to side, so you can easily switch the angle of your foot, ankle, and knee during the ride. I know it is too late for this race, but you may want to investigate Speedplay down the road. I swear by them.

Can't wait for next weekend. I have been reading this thread and getting psyched up. This will be my first HIM.

Well I took a look at the steelhead wewbsite and found out what my bib number is and the swim wave I'm in. Looks like I'm bib #1238, and will be in the 11th wave (40-44M). How many waves are there, 15? Seems like I read someplace the waves take off like every 5-7 minutes. Did anyone else read the same thing or am I confused with some other race?

Thanks for pointing out where to find the estimated wave start. That will be helpful in telling my family when they may expect me. Speaking of which, does anyone know if you can sign up for text alert messages to be sent at certain checkpoints?

Thanks

If you go to the main site, then click "register", at the top. Then on the left you'll see "confirm your entry". That takes you to the site to put in your name. It will pop up the bib number and wave.

McFuzz and I  are volunteering this year (he can't race b/c of an injury).  I will be wearing my BT shirt Friday at bodymarking.  I am coordinating the volunteers for bodymarking.

bib number 2272 starting in the 18th wave.

Thats 1.5 hours of waiting after the start.  I'm a little upset

edit:  I guess an upside will be that I can watch most everyone start and finish their swim.  Promise to wait for me at the finish line!

edit #2: After hammering away at the confirmation info to get an idea of bib numbers it looks like wave 18 (M25-29) is the last wave.

I'm 245 also in wave 4.  I would much rather be in a later wave, as in the past I've done well in the swim.  I'll likely be 18-19 mph on the bike and will be passed all day.  I'd rather be in a later wave and do more passing myself.

Once I'm out of the water I'll be home free!  Don't make to much of a wake for me to swim through!  I think I'll have my hands full just from the usual waves from Lake MI.

I had my first race nightmare last night.  I dreamed the run went into some ancient ruins and had a staircase going down that was about 6 feet wide, with the stairs about 3" wide and no handrail.  The person in front of me was climbing down like they were descending a mountain.  I was pretty sure I was going to fall down the flight.  On a high note, I recall I was feeling pretty fresh. . .weird.

My nightmares started about a week ago - and last night I couldn't get to sleep.  It's going to be a long 8 days...

They're fairly straight-forward - blowing tires, not being able to run anymore, etc.  At the same time I'm really excited about meeting everyone and how incredibly huge this race is going to be!

What do you think about running a disk?  I'm undecided.  I just put brand new tires on my other wheel - but I've only used the disk a couple times.  Is it flat enough to justify?

No race nightmares yet for me, which is odd as I usually have them. They seem to follow the same pattern that my old university exam nightmares had - I'm always late and unprepared. Last year when I did an IM they were different. I was usually leading the race well into the run when I would pass my condo, go inside and lie down for a nap

Steelhead is just about ideal for a disk. Enough rollers and trees to block much of the wind but the hills are not steep enough for the disk to hurt you very much. I use 90 mm wheels for Steelhead.

dave i've been having unprepaired dreams related to triathlons since I started doing them.  No matter what I almost ALWAYS forget to bring a wheel for my bike or oversleep and miss the wave.

My last one was different though, I was taking someone to their first tri and was helping them be prepared and totally dropped the ball because it's my usual unprepared nightmare.

moral of the story: do not trust my nightmare version of myself to help you.
