Hello Everyone - I am thinking about purchasing a trainer for my bike. Anyone has any suggestions?

I don't want to get rollers. My husband had purchased those, I saw him trying to use those and there is absolutely no way I am getting anywhere near those things.

Cycle Ops makes great trainers. If money is not an object get a fluid trainer. A good one will run you about $230-$300. If you're looking to spend less then get a magnetic trainer. Difference between the two is the fluid is filled with an oil and fan. As the fan moves through the oil it heats the oil up and the resistance gets greater. It is also very quiet. The magnetic trainer uses magnets to provide the resistance. It's loud.

Unless you want to wear industrial noise blocking headphones while you ride stay away from wind or fan trainers. You have to shout to be heard over these things.

I got in my hour swim yesterday. Kicking and drills mostly, 2650 yards. And I'm restarting my swim lessons the first or second week of the new year.

Calories yesterday were 2573, which is ok. It seems to be the bear minimum I need to function and still have enough energy to train. Monday was 2544. Going to try to get in 18 miles on the tri bike this afternoon. that'll bring me to 2100 miles for the year.

Great job David!  We have used the Cyclops trainers in the past and like them.  I would recommend getting a trainer tire for your rear wheel.  Most regular road tires are not tough enough and the constant friction from the trainer may cause them to break apart.  Before I got my trainer tire, I totally ruined a tire and had little black pieces of rubber all over the wall behind my bike.

Today I am going to get the last 8 miles on the bike in and do that short .75 run.  Then going to spend New Years Eve with our friends in McKinney. Kind of an annual tradition.

Be safe everyone

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone!

I have a short hill run (~4 miles) on tap today - since there aren't so many hills here and right now the wind sounds like a tornado, I'll do it on the tready at the Y.

We spend NYE playing board games with the short people in our house (and drinking champagne, of course). Tomorrow is football 24/7...although I try to hit the Y when it opens because they give out free shirts on New Year's. Yeah - I'll work out for t-shirts.

Thank you for the advise. I had tried my brother-in-law's fluid one time and loved it. I think it was a cycle ops. I think that's the one I am gonna go for.

Got my work out in last night. My trainer really beat me up yesterday in my swim session but got some great technique pointers. 360 yards in 10 min. 6 sec. I know it sounds lame, but it is a new record for me. Also got a quick 15 min. bike ride done last night.

Went to the gym this morning because of the bad weather and new year's eve tonight (everything is closing early here tonight). Got a 20 min. run (1.8 miles) and swim (340 yards in 10 min. 12 sec.). Was a bit slower than yesterday, but I was a bit tired from last night's workout.

Today's goal achieved and tomorrow is a rest day (also a hangover day, LOL). Back to the workout regimen in the new year. So have a safe new year's eve and Happy New Year to everyone.

Happy New Year's Eve! My goal for today is primarily not to get sick. My hubbie has been sick since Friday and I've been a bit sniffly but ok until 2AM this morning. I woke up with my throat sore because my nose was stopped up and I had been breathing through my mouth. I took a cough drop and seemed ok until I woke up at 6. Now I'm stopped up and my throat hurts I've been drinking airborne, sucking on coldeeze and eating berries but to no avail. I need to get in something today, it's the end of the december peachy challenge and I can't miss on the last day! But, it might just be some stretching.

Hello everyone!   I'm back in town and have actually hit the gym the past two days.   Intervals in the pool yesterday and today was weight training.   Tomorrow there is a 5k I might do but it is SO windy right now that if it doesn't die down there's now way I'm running.  I was afraid it would blow my 32 pound 4-year old right off his feet!

Happy New Year!!!!

Morning all!  Any New Years Day workout plans?  We will do something.  Run is on the plan but may switch it for a bike if it warms up.

As of right now, I wish that I could log a nap as a workout.  Got home way too late and up early to take my mom to the airport.  I am going to be staying at her house the next 4 nights.  Her dog does not get along with our dogs so we cannot keep them togther.  She only lives a few miles away so at least I get to spend most time at my house.

Happy New Year all. No plans for workout today. It is 9 degrees outside today, and windchill is -9. Plus, today is rest day for me.

I swam today...my coach is a hard-a$$; guess you got lucky.

1000 yards, including some fist drill.

Everyone have a great day.

Happy New Year!

I spent an hour on the trainer this morning while I watched the first quarter of the Hawkeye game. (WHOO WHOO! Go Iowa!)

I was going to hit the Y when they opened this morning for a quick swim (and to grab the free t-shirt for this year)...but sleeping in felt so much better.

On deck for the rest of the day - watching football and hockey...trying not to make a permanent rut in the couch.

Yeah, my coach is pretty mean too.  She had me do 30 minutes of core and now I have to do a trainer ride...What's up with that

Trainer ride in the books.  Never did get a nap in today, and I really feel like I need one badly!

Whew, that was close. I slept most of the day, but got in some yoga and trainer time. Not really a "ride" but I was wearing bike shorts, sitting and pedalling.

My bike isn't sitting right in it, its a little wobbly (tried tightening it) and makes a clicking sound.   Need to get that figured out tomorrow.

1 day down, 30 to go, 2 mi. down, 115 to go!

Morning All,

It is so quiet in my office today.  That usually makes the day seem like it is going to go on forever.  It's going to ne sunny and 75 here today.  I may feel an illness coming on later today that I need to leave work for.  And the cure for it would be a nice long bike ride

We have a 10K tomorrow and the low is only going to be 60.  Yeah for beaing able to wear shorts for a run in January!!  Realy though, the reason I like to do these runs at White Rock Lake is that my favorite breakfast place (Cafe Brazil) is right there so after the run, we go and have a great breakfast. (Sorry Haley...I know you love that place).

What's on tap for today??

So....can I do an oly one month after my first full mary?

I was dinking around yesterday verifying all the registration dates for the tris I want to do this year when I realized that the oly I wanted to do in June had been moved to September. Wouldn't normally be a big deal, but I really wanted to get an early season oly because I was cheated out of my first oly last fall (switched to a du because of weather...good, because swimming is my achilles heel - but bad, because I was sooo ready to get the swimming monkey off my back).

So I did some more looking, and there is a new Oly in my hometown on May 17. One month after my mary on April 18. Good because it's local and will be wetsuit legal (whoo whoo)...bad because it's a little sooner than I was thinking. I want to get the oly out of the way so I can decide if I wanna go oly or HIM in the fall.

What do you think?

Good morning everyone. I am getting so jealous right now reading about 70 degree weathers down south. Here it is about 14 degrees and we are supposed to get a snow storm later tonight - AGAIN. Can't wait for summer.

Well! I got my mini workout in this morning - 340+ yds. swim and a 30 min. bike ride on the stationary. My very first tri (mini sprint) is in 2 weeks, so trying to gear up for that. I am getting a little nervous about it though, especially after I found out some of the other folks in the tri are like champion swimmers and stuff. I look like a drowning rat when I am swimming. We'll see how it goes.

Hey all,

Kristen, as long as both are not "A" races, I think you are ok to do them both.  You will obviously be following a run focused program but you will have to fit some swims and bikes in there.  Which is first, the mary or the Oly?

Lina, don't worry about other people and what they can or cannot do. Run your race!

I'm still laying low, trying to shake this bug I got. I went to bed at 9:30 New Year's Eve and woke up at 9 the next morning! I can't remember the last time I slept past 7, nevermind got almost 12 hours of sleep!

Kristen, is this your first marathon? Do you come from a running background? My husband and I did our first marathon last January. I was able to run after a week's rest but it was slow for the first few weeks (well, slower then usual, I'm almost always slow!). However, my husband couldn't run for a month. I think if you've run a mary before, you have an idea of your own recovery. If you haven't, I'm not sure if there's a general rule of thumb on recovery times. How has your body responded to the long runs so far? That might give you an indication.

The nice thing about triathlon is this; unless you're a pro and need to win to put food on the table you only have to compete against yourself and your personal limitations. No one else matters. Have a great race and do your best!

Ran 6 miles outside today. 44 degrees with sweats and earmuffs isn't that bad. I also signed up for 3 of the 5 or 6 races I'm doing this year.

I ate too much yesterday. My 1600 calorie breakfast didn't start things off right and I was playing catch up all day. I cooked pancakes and sausages for the family. Who new 4 sausage links were 1000 calories?

I liked going with you guys and John. And the grilled cheese obviously. Anyway...its pretty cool here still, I don't like hearing about your 60 degrees and such.

Good workout for me today, I feel like I trained for about 4 hours...CrossFit and then yoga. I was going to get on the bike but my complete disregard for nutrition and hydration has knocked me flat on my butt. I'll probably be asleep by 9pm.

What I had today:
2 cups coffee (9am)
1 glass water (1pm)
2 clementines (2ish)
1 glass water
spicy vegetable soup (3pm)
egg salad sandwich + water (530pm)

Now, I'm trying to take in as much water as I can.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I guess I have a bug too.   I went to bed early last night feeling a little 'off'.  Woke around midnight with a swollen throat almost unable to swallow.  I COULD swallow, but it was very painful.   Got up and went to urgent care first thing this morning.   It's not strep so the doctor said it must be viral and to just take it easy, drink lots of fluids (yeah... that HURTS!) and wait it out.  Guess I won't be training for a few days since I could be contagious, she said.  Ugh.
