How's everyon's 2009 going so far? I woke up this morning with the intention of doing 100 x 100 @ 1:30 in the pool but got sidetracked by MarioKart. Still managed to get a decent swim in, maybe I'll save the 10K yd workout for Feb 28th to end the weight loss challenge.

With a couple other people in the pool I wasn't thinking about much to pass on. I was focusing on keeping a low stroke count and front quadrant swimming. I reached a point on my 125's that no matter how hard or how easy I swam I hit the wall at the same time. So I swam easy and efficient. Why waste the energy.

what is this "easy and efficient swimming" you speak of?  '09 has been good for training so far.  4 day weekends are helpful that way.  Have a R/S workout with some weights this AM.  Hopefuly I can get ont he trainer tonight as well.

Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow, should have fun with some of the CT-BT folks... The question will be how many time you can lap me in the pool on 50s.  But I bet I can out eat you at lunch afterwards.

2009 is starting off well for me, except that I am having an issue with motivation.  I have no want to run and limited motivation for swimming.  All I want to do right now is get on the trainer and ride hard, which I might do this afternoon.  It's seems that now that I am healthy again, I am lazy.  I just had over a week off/light workouts, so I'm not overtraining.

What do you guys do when you start to lack the motivation for workouts?

Group training, Masters swim,Bike club,run club,etc.

Movies,Rocky,Vision Quest,etc.

Guest gym pass to get a change of scenery(you are not obligated to join), watching others for motivation, also trainers are good for motivation even if its one hour, spin classes are awesome in winter!

Classes help.  Maybe a PT session.  Usually, if I can just get out of the house I get something done.

Much to the chagrin of my other half, I often find that buying a new pair of running gear or downloading new songs on my IPOD helps tremendously. Then, I'm excited to use my new shoes, shorts, etc. and run. I also like trying to run a new route and that helps as well. I understand the feeling of losing motivation. Having a friend to run with or even running in an area that is well traversed by runners helps. One more thing--I set a ridiculous goal for myself for this month--20 swims. It's helping b/c I've set it, said it, and won't back down from it. I'm hoping that sort of goal setting (no specific goals on what I do once I get there--I just need to get my self in the pool) will jump start my motivation. Good luck!

Hey, everyone, happy new year! Finally back from NYC, had a great time. Now I'm back after the training....

My official weigh in weight is 195. Goal is to get down to 180 by 3/1. I started back working out with a longish run yesterday, so we're back rolling!

Good to see so many of you keeping up the workouts through the New Year.

Thanks for the advise!

I had an enjoyable swim this morning.  The pool was more crowded than I have ever seen the pool for a Sunday morning.  Usually the pool is empty and I focus on the distance/time.  I didn't have time to think about distance this morning, as I had to focus on not getting hit too often by the other people in the pool.  (The guy in the halved lane next to me was doing some weird kick that would cross into my path and got me a couple of times.)  The crowded pool was a nice change.

My brain is there for the pickin'. Er.... um .... that didn't sound right. Thanks for the kind words but it is I who should be doing the thanking. Jeff hosted a great workout and a fantastic lunch. Thank you Jeff. I think you are going to see some huge gains in the pool in the next few weeks. Keep up the great work!!

I am back from over a week of travelling with family, food, drinks, a NYC trip, skiing, ice skating but only a little training.  My starting weight for the challenge is 173 lbs.  Goal is something less than 165 lbs.

Got a short run in today which felt good.  Masters swim group starts Tuesday so I hope to pick up some pointers there.

27 degree bike ride yesterday, it was cold until the very end. About half way through my ride I thought I spotted a wild turkey, as we goy closer it turned out to be a bald eagle. I know they are common in some parts of the U.S., but that was the first time I saw one up close and they are huge. Close as in 150 yards. Truly awesome, too cold to get a pic though, my hands were almost numb!

That's so cool!  I've only seen bald eagles at the zoo.  I would love to see one in the wild.

SweetK - 2009-01-05 12:43 PM Update: Today I got to ride the bike at PT for 10 minutes - I went 2.1 miles I was informed that I could add riding my bike on the trainer to my daily exercises starting at 10 minutes and building to 20 minutes by the end of the week. Still no swimming, PT is worried about the force of the water if I make a bad kick or breast stroke kick or tread for any reason - both kicks would be too hard on my knee... so swimming has to wait. My weight - well this morning it was 146.8 or 0.2 pounds down, I won't count it until it's a full pound.

Glad to hear that your progress continues.  It must be great to have some restrictions lifted!  Good luck as you continue.

Sounds like everyone is doing well starting the new year. I had to go to the sports chiro/ART guy this morning--my hip flexor was hurting something awful and it turns out my hips had come off center and had to be realigned (which was why I was limping and having pain while running). Now I have no excuse not to go do my last 'long' run before Houston Marathon tomorrow and I'm just glad I can run again! And swim... I'm still determined to learn to love swimming.

Aimee, what causes this? I think I had the same thing happen, after getting a soreness sorta like a car hit me I started using a foam roller, I felt something adjust and now it not only feels better but my runs feel different. At first I thought it was a tight IT band, but the soreness was more in the joint area,my right allot more than the left, both sides for sure though.

I started going to a chiro about 2 years ago after a major neck issue.  A good one is great.  A bad one can hurt you so be careful.

Bad news, dudes...you're going to have to do all my working-out this week. I got all blonde on myself and left all my workout gear - except shoes and socks - in Michigan. Heh. So my next workout will be Friday. Who's picking up my slack?
