Wow, those are some great looking pictures and some beautiful water.  Wish I could swim in something like that!  Texas lakes are one big brown muddy mess!

I am officially jealous now!  GORGEOUS water!  No chance in TX of getting clear water like that!  Definitely not jealous of the cold temps though.

Witty, I wear a full wetsuit, I prefer the warmth and do not feel restricted in the arms by it!

Team, I am looking at getting a new helmet. I posted this on the forums, and it seems the most important thing is ventilation and that is matched your bike! (rolls eyes) Any ideas?  Also I am not want to spend $100+ on it, well my wife doesn;t want me to spend that much!

Are you looking to rock one of the aero helmets?  I plopped down $40 for a run of the mill helmet...but ventilation IS key.

James, I really like the Bell helmets.  I had always worn Giro until my current Bell Sweep helmet.  It has a great knob system in the back for tightening the helmet exactly where you want it.  It has been so much more comfortable.  I got a top of the line Bell (at the time) for $120, while the top of the line Giro was going for $210.  The Bell equivalents are always cheaper than the Giro.  I've heard Specialized are the lightest/airiest (is that a word?) helmets but they are pricey.

Go to a local shop and try different brands on, then if you pick one you can usually find it cheaper online.  These are the top 4 road helmets in each brand (msrp):

Bell Volt ($175), Sweep ($140), Array ($100), Furio ($65)
Giro Ionos ($230), Atmos ($175) ,Saros ($120), Stylus ($80)

Helmet prices tend to really range for some reason.

You have your $20 walmarts.  Dont buy this, as you will never want to wear it.

You have your $40 entry level name brand ones.  This can be a really good buy and be perfect for your needs.

You have your $80-100 ones.  These are the same as the 40s, but offer more adjustment, maybe look cooler, and overall just designed a littler better.

Your $150+ ones get into lots of adjustment, more ergonomical, more areodynamic, and sometimes if you are lucky, it will have flames painted on!

For me, the biggest factor has always been comfort.  I don't want to feel like I am even wearing a helmet.

Thanks you the input, I will let you know what I find.

This evening, we are going out for a 2nd OWS, this time shooting for a mile, almost the distance of my race on the 17th. I am really looking forward to it!

what a beautiful sight to wake up to everyday.  a survival suit would probably work better than a wetsuit though Laughing

speaking of wetsuits james, and anyone else who wants to respond - how do i go about knowing what type i am looking for?  other than the obvious (to me at least) need for sleeves, it's really cold in the northeast ocean.  am i supposed to get a certain thickness, material, etc.?  and what about booties?  my feet will freeze in this water.  i want to get one soon so i can get out of the pool.  i know, i haven't really been in the pool that much but, i'm trying...

Helmets are critical attire.  excellent head protection (it's the only one you've got) is critical, light weight is important (stamp out headaches!), and ventilation rounds out what i look for in a hemet.  you can get all those requirements and one that matches your frame (extreme eye rolling) for $40-$60.  http://www.performancebike.com/shop/sub_cat.cfm?subcategory_id=4210

i've had both Bell and Giro and found them equally comfortable.  good luck!

I would say to try a couple different brands on. I go with a Zoot wetsuit, full sleeves, cause warmth is muy importante with me also. I have never swam with booties, Memphis doesn't get that cold, the water temp will be mid 60s to 70. You can rent wetsuits and try out the different thickness of them, but I like it the warmest. If you get a suit that fits you properly, you should not have any restrictions on your arms.

I bought an Xterra. When I get home I'll double check on which one.  I wore an older one that I rented through Xterra for my Oly race last year and I got too hot.  I don't know how much thickness plays into warmth versus bouyancy.

I am actually shopping for a wetsuit tomorrow!  I will let you know what advice I get from the shops.

Today was my frist time in the pool in almost 2 years!  Went pretty good, I watched the TI movies last night, and trying to put their "techniques" down.  Relax, balence, and float in the water.  I found I was able to do a couple of lengths without the HR raising much, feeling much more controlled.  I still can't get my breathing though, something about breathing out under water doesn't feel right, and if I don't I find I am rushing the breath.  Its hard to explain, but its what I need to work on for sure.

I also still get a little dizzy in the water.  Not sure why, maybe its the goggles.  Maybe I will try a motion sickness pill first.

TI's approach to breathing makes it more difficult to breath since I'm pretty sure they teach you to bury your head more than is comfortable.  The drills are good though.

When you exhale, you get rid of the CO2 that your body produced in exchange for O2.  If you don't exhale enough than the pH of your blood increases.  Acidic blood creates a big burden for your body.  So, it's almost more important to get a longer exhaled breath than inhaled breath.  Robb, are you breathing every stroke on one side?  Some people may get disoriented if they try to learn alternate side breathing right off the bat.  Make sure you're hydrated going into your swim, being dehydrated could lead to the dizzyness.  I can't think of too many more words of wisdom, but maybe after some sleep I'll be more effective!

I find with the TI way, my strokes are really smooth, and I can cover a lot of distance with little effort.  I was able to do 4 lengths and with my HR hardly going up at all, the only problem was I was holding my breath way too long.

I find I can breath nice and easy if I lift my head out of the water more, but then my hips fall down and my long legs drag down, and I come almost to a stop.  It sucks because I feel like I could swim forever if I had a snorkel or something lol.

FYI - From what I have heard, snorkels are allowed in races.  Anything that propels you foward (likes fins) are not.

Something to think about.

Happy Friday all!

Yep I totally understand where you are coming from, I do the same exact thing!

I tend to take me head out of the water too much and it pulls my lower body down.

Maybe if we swim long enough we will evolve to breathe underwater?? LOL

It too took me a little while to figure out how to breathe while swimming.  I do keep my head down, but then rotate my body (not just my head) to one side in order to take a breath.  I am almost swimming on my side when I breathe.  I tinkered with it a bit more and found that if i tuck my chin towards my chest while breathing it creates a little air pocket to breath in.  I found that while swimming on my side I can exhale/inhale for a little longer than if i just rotate my head.

I also used to breath on one side only and this caused dizzyness for me.  Once I switched to breathing on both sides (every 3 strokes) it pretty much went away.  I don't breathe out the entire time my head is under water.  I will only start to breathe out as my head is about to come out of the water.  If i breathe out too soon then my body's natural instinct is to take a breath (not good)!

Don't know if any of this is good advice but it works for me, and I just set my PR 100y pool swim today at 1:44 and 500y @ 9:09!

ps - got my 2 swims in this week

Well, wetsuit shopping didn't go as well as I had hoped.  There are only 2 places within driving that sold them, one place had only 1 kind (for $500), and the other place had another brand cheap (<300) but none close to my size, so kind of a bust.  I really just want to know what size to buy and probably go online to get it.

On a plus side, they had Team Discovery Channel bike jerseys on sale.  $124 reg. price, on for $30!!!!  I bought 2!

As of tomorrow, I should have my two swims in

I finally decided to purchase a bronze membership on BT.  I felt that I am using it so much that I needed to support the great work these guys do to get us all this great stuff to use.  Now to go play around and see what all new features I can use!

Oh no! Our thread dropped to the bottom of the page!

Hope everyone had a good weekend.  I'm not sure if six "holes" of beer golf count as training.  I didn't get any other physical activity in this weekend. =

One more OWS tomorrow morning, then I am done until Sunday. Time to taper!

i really don't know if I do the taper thing right or not, but I plan on replacing any runs with walks with the kids and work on hydrating myself starting Thursday all to get ready for Sunday!
