I had my first official swim lesson today.  Instructor was great!   He's a college swimmer, seems very knowledgeable and passionate about his sport.   He's been a competitive swimmer since grade school and now is swimming in college on scholarship.
First he had me swim a few lengths of the pool just to see my stroke and then we got into some kicking and breathing drills.  We trained in the deep end (14').  He said he prefers training there.  There's no touching bottom if you get tired, you either keep going or you drown...Let me tell you what...that's the hardest workout I've had in a long time...WOW!  Legs felt like jell-o after an hour of kicking drills.  It was awesome though.  Next lesson is scheduled for Thursday...I'll keep you posted on how it goes.Tongue out

Wow, he takes the phrase: "sink or swim" quite literally, huh? Sounds like you are doing great. Awesome job and keep at it!  Smile

Yeah, I kind of chuckled when he said it, I knew he was joking, but serious at the same time.  Guess it does make sense, makes you work hard for it.  No "freebies" on touching bottom to take a rest.  I think I'm going to like this guy...He really pushes me to work hard, but at the same time realizes I'm not a seasoned or experienced swimmer and he acknowledges that...so far so good...

So where did you find this guy?  I could use some help as well but don't want to pay out the huge bucks for a TI seminar.

I live near a college town.  I called the university rec center and got hooked up with the aquatics dept.  The lessons are 6 1-hour long lessons for $100.  The way I look at it is I'm sure I've blown $100 on numerous other useless things so I didn't think I could go wrong here.  So far it looks to be a good investment...we'll see how things play out.

Tri Bike Update:

A couple of weeks ago I had posted that I was trying out a tri bike that one of my teamates was offering to sell at a really good price. He let me try it out for 2 wks. I took it into my LBS to get fitted last friday and to get their opinion if it was worth the price. They said the shimano components alone was worth the price. (yay-I'm not getting ripped off for onceSmile!) Anyhoo, I got to ride it twice over the long weekend- 27 miles each time and I even clipped in (have only clipped in spin class prior to this). Yes, I fell once, or twice..... Tongue out I still have alot to learn about riding a tri bike. Aero position felt a little wierd at first and the bike is so light when I sneezed to the side I felt like I was going to blow over. But over all I loved it and right behind swimming, cycling is my second passion right now. And yes Mo, I will eventually get a road bike, but a girl has to eat and bills to pay!

What's up with that lol...

Congrat on the new bike purchase. QR's are good bikes..

We all have stupid falls(what i call them) with clipless pedals.. i remember mine like it was yesterday(only it was like 5 years ago). Riding my mtn bike through the city jumping on/off curbs.. clipping in/out frequently, to get comfortable.. i come up to a light.. and im sitting there like i was suppose to do something.. next thing you know i was on the ground laughing.. saying to myself: you big dummy you forgot to unclip..

Aero position is cool, requires practice, and it will help in recovery when riding.. You will get it.. i promise.

99% kicking drills some with and some without body rotations, working on kicking and breathing technique. First lesson the pool was set up for 25 meters, last lesson it was set up for 50's, quite a difference when all you're doing is kicking.

Just got into some arm-recovery drills last time.  He called them shark fin drills.  Basically swimming, ie. kicking on side and bring arm up along your side and bend elbow until arm forms what appear to  be a fin in the water.  Using only legs to get from one end to the other.  Lower back down and repeat for 50 meters, then switch sides and arm.

Also did a drill (Rotators) where you rotate body 180° from side to front to opposite side using abs/hips to rotate.  Face is looking at bottom of pool at all times ands are at sides the entire time, only kicking to propel you.  Once on opposite side, take breath and rotate to other side, breath and repeat...those are butt kickers!

Not really worrying about total distances right now.  Just working on getting down proper technique for now.  Distance will come.  Lessons are about an hour.  I've been whipped after that hour.  Way harder than any run or bike ride for me...it will come with practice, patients and time...I hope...

Well

May looked great for everyone. Good job guys. It almost seemed that everyone struggled in the run department.. crazy.

Hopefully June will be better.

A little Rant:
Its starting to get hot outside, so getting heat acclimated is very important(get body use to stressful actives outside). Make sure you are hydrated, take a water bottle with you when running. carry an extra bottle on bike rides (maybe add a gatorade or something for electrolyte replenishment). If you training and you feel like you need to walk or stop, do it, no need to be a superstar. Your fluid intake should increase in the summer time, IF YOU ARE THIRSTY YOU ARE ALREADY DEHYDRATED.. Plan your training accordingly(times and what you are doing). If you have a long run planned, only do the long run. Or do something in morning(run) and do something else in evening(swim or bike). weather.com and accuweather should be your friend.

Thats all for now..

TRI HARD

Smart reminders Mo.  Thanks.

I rarely quaff enough h20.  If anyone has any ideas/tips on how they get it done, please post.  Recently I tried the 8 glasses/day app on itouch.  Worked for a few days (yea!), then...nada.

On a related note, when I get done swimming I'm incredibly thirsty - for water.  Anyone know why that is?  Is it just me?

Yeah, I was really bad about waiting until I was already thirsty before drinking. I just always try to keep water around me, big liter jug at my desk, glass of water on my nightstand, bottle of water in my work bag (for when I'm running around and seeing clients), ect. For me, it's out of sight, out of mind so this way I always keep it in sight and in mind. Not very high tech, I know.

That's a good thing that you're thirsty for water after a swim, it means you are breathing correctly while swimming and not inhaling a ton of pool water!Wink Actually, you are probably not drinking enough while swimming. You can still get dehydrated in the pool, you just might not notice right away like on the bike or run because you can feel yourself sweating, where as in the pool....well, you're surrounded by water. While your body is immersed in water you don't have the urge to drink fluids and your brain is not aware of need for water. So, I just keep a water bottle (usually w/HEED or Gatorade) to sip on between my sets. Hope this helps!

Well d,
i get thirsty when swimming as well... i have a water bottle at the pool wall... so when i want something.. i stop and get a drink.

i also squeeze a little lemon in my water.. it changes the favor, makes it more tolerable. i sometimes try to make a game out drinking water, keeps me entertained and hydrated..

When I coached swimming I required everyone to have a water bottle on the deck for quick sips in between sets. You can lose up to four pounds in a 2 hour swim workout from perspiration. Especially for anyone that wears a swim cap. Think about it water is close to 80 degrees and you are working out, so it is no surprise you would be sweating. 20oz of water or sport drink will make that last set feel a lot better than nothing at all.
