Irondg, I see you are a fellow "Marietta-ian"? (Is that term correct). What rides did you use for training for IMKY? How well did they prepare you for the race? I've been pondering where to train to match the terrain around Louisville, but it can be a bit tough around here to find rides where the cars are willing to share the road.

Marietta peeps, I've heard that the Roswell ride (www.bikeroswell.com) or the Bud Plant ride are good training for IMKY.  I have no empirical data on this, though.

I live right off of Dallas Highway and Barrett Parkway so I use the rollers of West Cobb quite a bit.  Burnt Hickory/Acworth Due West/Stilesboro roads will all help you get ready for the ride.  I ride from my house, do some hills and then ride over to the Comet for some HR/Pace work.  When it get's warmer we should get some group rides going.  I see a few ATL folks on this thread.  Silk Sheets is a good prep place as well.

I've never done a Cartersville ride (Bud Plant) if you can believe that.  It's 10 miles from my house!!  But, talking to some other folks that did IMKY with me last year, the Bud Plant ride is just fine.  If you look at the course elevation, it's really on "bad" on one strech - the out and back around miles 18-25 if memory serves.  There are plenty of downhills to recover on.

Strongly suggest that if you come to Lou. during Apr. and May beware of Derby events.  Also Thunder Over Louisville is a huge event.  I wouldn't ride my bike near River Road during Thunder weekend.  Derby events usually start last two weeks of Apr. and end at first Sat. in May.

There are triathlete rides posted over on the Georgia board.  We are planning on doing the gaps up in N Georgia on Jan. 3rd.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=190093&posts=12&start=1

There are a bunch of folks from ATL doing this race and I'm sure we'll be riding a lot.  If you are interested let me know.

I was considering doing the Cardinal Harbour 1/2 iron distance race as a warm up for IMKY. The race will be the 3rd week of July.

Do you think this is too close to IMKY to allow proper recovery? It will be approx. 5 weeks before IMKY.

Thoughts?

I did a HIM 5 weeks before B2B this year and it turned into a training day.  5 weeks out is when you are generally doing your highest volume weeks, and there is not time for a taper or an injury.  I got out on the bike and just couldn't pushit.  At one point I was yawning!  On the run I fell into my forever pace and logged the miles.  It was a great training day, but it wasn't a race.

Cardinal harbour is the perfect training event since it is on some of the IM course.  I've heard it's a pretty low frills race, but the price is low too.

I also just signed up for the race.

I am coming off a nasty shoulder surgery so I should be ready to go now.

It will be my first IM.

Hey everyone,

I am starting to really get excited for IM Louisville, especially going into the New Year. I hope every one is having a great Holiday season and ready for Jan 1st with set training plans.

In an effort to make this year's race the best ever, I have created a Facebook page to bring together all athletes and their supporters.

I literally just started this tonight, so it is definitely a work in progress. I have made it open to all, so feel free to add any content.

Figured I'd finally post something up here after lurking around for a while....

First IM....Can't wait for my training program to start up in March.  For now I'm doing some running since it's my most hated sport .  I have been training for the Mercedes Benz Marathon, but yesterday on my long run I started to get a weird pain in my lower right knee that radiated through my lower leg.  I'm taking a few days off and if it continues I'll scrap the marathon training.  Being healthy and injury-free for Ironman is waaay more important!

So what training plans are people using?  Right now my plan is to use a plan from TrainingPeaks by Matt Fitzgerald (his Level 1 plan).  I've also considered using the plan spelled out in the book "Ironman Start to Finish:  Ironman Training" by Paul Huddle and Roch Frey.  Has anyone used either of these plans?

So my last purchase in 2009 was me registering for IM Louisville - I have never done a full and did my first half last sept. I'm scared lol . . . But really excited

I'm also kind of new to BT - was posting a good bit leading up to my first half but then backed off due to having to back off my training for a few months!!!

Anyways - just wanted to drop in and somewhat introduce myself and say HI!!! Laughing

Im looking too. I kinda want to be as economical as possible and not go with a super nice hotel (ie Mariott is 225 a night!). At the same time, I dont want to stay at the Motel 6 for my Ironman experience. Any suggestions for moderate prices on a hotel? I dont necessarily have to be right in downtown

Courtyard and Springhill Suites are both mid 100's and are nice properties.  I've stayed in one or the other, I can't recall which.

But I stay in those lines all the time.  Quite frankly, I'd rather be in one of those than a full Hyatt or Marriot.  With Springhill and Courtyard you'll get breakfast for free and a microwave/fridge in your room.  You might not at a Marriott or Hyatt full.

PS. I booked at one of those two, again i don't remember which.

LODGING IRONMAN LOUISVILLE, BEST KEPT SECRET
If you want to be economical and still have continental breakfast, microwave, and fridge, and only be a few minutes from the starting line, use your USAT membership code, make your reservation through choice hotels and book a room at the Comfort Suites hotel in Jefferson, IN.
My family and I have stayed here twice, once for IM and once on the way to TN.  It is fairly new, it is clean, it is quiet, it is safe.  What it does NOT offer is a pool.  It is right off the highway and if you take the bridge heading west, you are on highway...(I think it's 31) that takes your right downtown within walking distance for everything IM that you need.  Good luck!
However, if I don't get a room in2011 when I return...I'm blaming you.
