Good morning every one! I hope you all had a great Christmas. Any cool Tri gifts?

I got a gift certificate for swim lessons at my Y.  There was a Tri tree ornament in my stocking. The best family gift of the year was not tri related, Santa brought a drum set for my kids, which they are loving!

It's sleet and freezing rain here today. So, I'll be on the bike trainer.

Tonight, I have a party/mini reunion with a bunch of people I graduated from HS with.

Morning everyone!  Nothing tri related for me, but I did get a Phillies Jersey and an NHL winter classic shirt!  And my MIL gave me some money specifically to be used for race registrations...

It's raining here too, and I'm really not feeling running in the rain.  I'll hit the Y this afternoon for a few dozen laps around the indoor track.  Probably only 4 or 5 miles today.  Tomorrow is my scheduled long run.  I'll probably be on the trainer later tonight while I watch the Flyers game.

I'll be heading to the gym this morning for  a 1.5 hour Indoor Cycling Class.  No specific tri related gifting.  Some running shorts and a pair of running gloves for cold weather.  I'll be going out to purchase the H2O audio for swimming with the IPOD that fits it this week and trying to located the book I posted and spoke of earlier. Should help when swimming those long ones.  Off to the gym.Laughing

Just back from a 10K run on a treadmill despite the nice weather we're having here today (yesterday was MISERABLE cold rain all day).  Still too many icey spots on the road, but I expect to be back outside soon.  One can only take so much hamster.  Karen and I gave each other our traditional gift of gym membership (the gift of health... lol), but this year my additional "gift" to her is to get her over there more often.  Good start this morning as she put in 30 min on the elliptical.  I do have a Amazon gift certificate to ponder though.

Ate way too much the last few days and enjoyed some festive local brews as well :-)  Felt bloated on the treadmill, but was out there for my long run of the week.  Though I noticed that my long run is Scout's short run... lol.  Nicely done, Scout!  Have a good one, everyone!  Hope those of you who are sick or have kids that are sick are well or on the mend.  Tough time of the year to be under the weather.  Sending healing thoughts your way!

So Brian, the Ducks are going to the Rose... are you going down for it?  My sister lives in Corvallis (though not associated with the school).  Anyway... best of luck to them!

Happy Boxing Day everyone!

Illness is making its way through my family, but has mercifully spared me.  We had a quiet but very pleasant Christmas -- nobody was horribly sick on the day (but my wife and daughter are today...).

Sounds like people got some nice loot for Christmas, including some tri-loot.  I got entries to races, so I'll be signing up for my races soon, and that always gives me a little kick in the pants, training-wise.

I hope the weather is treating people better.

TriGuyBri - 2009-12-24 12:15 PM I remember some of us wanted to lose a few more lbs. of weight and be closer to race weight or competition weight.  I found this book (Race Weight:  How to Get Lean for Peak Performance by Matt Fitzgerald) yesterday (pretty new) and it looks real good; read couple of pages that were posted.  I might invest in it.  Here is the link.

http://www.velopress.com/nutrition.php?id=289

I'm in the middle of it now.  I'm not very well informed about nutrition, so it could be that he reports a lot of stuff that most people already know, but I'm finding it pretty helpful and informative.  He has a nice system for 'scoring' your diet which is helpful and easy to use.  That's what I needed, because calorie counting is just not on for me.  I've tried it a few times and it was just too burdensome.  I also like that he seems to be good at helping the reader find a sensible goal.

A minor complaint:  He says that you shouldn't weigh yourself every day because weight fluctuates too much on a daily basis. He then goes on to suggest that you should weigh yourself once every 4 weeks.  But if you aren't supposed to weigh yourself daily because of fluctuations, then weighing yourself once every 4 weeks is even worse, for the same reason.  I'm speaking purely statistically, here.  If the variable you are measuring fluctuates a lot, it is best to take the average of many measurements.  So I'd say it is better to weigh every day and take a weekly average.

No unfortunately not going down to the game.  Corvallis, huh.... The Beavers (OSU) didn't fair to well in their Bowl game being smashed by BYU.  I think they were still feeling it from the loss to the Ducks in the Civil War Game (the Beavo's wouldn't tell you that, but I believe it had to have affected them).  Sounds like a pretty producive morning for you Stu.  I started out ont he dreadmill for a while during the beginning of the winter, but quickly feel out of favor and began runningoutside again.  Bought some winter running gear and off I went.  It has been cold, but for the most part I have been lucky running between showers.  I'll be going out for my long run tomorrow Amping it up to 6.5 miles tomorrow.  Getting ready for my first 10K race on Jan. 17th.  Goal is to come in under 1 hr. with a stretch goal of 56 min. or less.

17th.  Goal is to come in under 1 hr. with a stretch goal of 56 min. or less.

I *really* prefer being outdoors too, though I can do without rain and wind together.  However, one thing that I do like about Treadmills and why I try to do at least one workout / week on them is to work on my pacing.  Since I started running, I've always struggled with keeping a steady pace in a workout or a race.  The treadmill and Garmin, both of which I just started using this year have really helped and my run times, especially in longer races have improved this year, in part, b/c of better pacing. I find it a little easier to set a pace and stick to it with the treadmill.  Kind of like having a coach in your ear going, "you can't slow down... keep the pace".

Is this your first 10K?  That's my favorite race distance.  Mentally, I always try to think of it as relax and enjoy the first two miles, be as loose as I can dodging around people, then focus in on target pace miles 3-5, and then push for the last mile.  I'd love to get under 50 this year (for my 50th B-Day), which I never could have imagined when I started and couldn't break 30 in a 5K (and my pacing was like 7-10-14... lol).  I think one of the keys to breaking 50 will be getting these last pounds off... so thanks to you and Michael for mentioning that book.  Used part of my Amazon gift certificate to pick that up.  Should make for good travel reading!

First 10K.  I like your thoughts about the first couple miles...I generally am pretty close about my pacing (knowing where I am at).  I am not real competitive with others at this point in my life, however, I am real competitive with reaching my goals that I set.  I have been working on negative splits during my training runs ( running second half faster than first half).  It takes me a while to get warmed up anyway.  Usually by mile 2 I am running well and breathing better; into a nice pace.  I hope to pick it up with week.  Right now I am not fighting the holiday snacks, but continue to train.  I am noticing my weight is not dropping, but my clothes are fitting better so I know I dropping fat.

I think I have the green light to puchase the H2O Audio, IPOD and Book this week.  My wife who I surprised with some presents for XMAS (she was not expecting) felt a little guilty that she got me a caulking gun that swivels. Very nice of her to do that.  She came into my office and said that I should use some disposible income I received for being a guest speaker to a Beg. School Adm. College Class instead of puttin it toweards the kitchen cabinet doors.  This was not my intention with the gifts.

Losing about 5 lbs. before the 17th would be great.  Very doable with my weight fluctuations; just need to get after eating the right food and having it available to eat or make.  In order to do that I may have to begin cooking more often.

Nice!!!  I want a new bikeCry...I am going to have to wait another year or so.  Maybe once I get into longer races and my wife knows I "REAL SERIOUS" about this; like a HIM or IM.

You may have to change your name from GrannyGear to something else.  Sounds like a great contest!!!!

Enjoy your new ride.

Good morning!  What's on tap today?

Me:  I managed to get a little (but mercifully, only a little) sick.  I guess it was inevitable after caring for the rest of my sick family.  But I'm already feeling slightly better, and I think this will be short-lived.  I might even still do my recovery run this evening.  We'll see.

Have a great one everybody.

Thanks everyone for the congrats on the bike.  It is a Felt B2R only lacking engine.  Bri sorry about those Beavers, Yay Cougs (True Blue here)!  Just finished importing training plans for the year, I haven't used these before, and may have a few dumb questions when I start logging in a few days.
