I have a similar problem: looking for a half marathon training program to encorporate with tri training.  I am still recovering from a plantar problem from over a year and a half ago, which is why I started tri training in the first place.  I love swimming and biking but would really like to increase my run mileage.  It's more of a time crunch problem (didn't seem to be a problem during good weather), but now I don't seem to have enough time after work.

I would go down to 4 times per week.  You don't need the 5th day to train effectively for the half.  You could always make up for the 5th day by training longer on another day.

wabashtriguy17 - 2010-01-28 11:20 AM Question regarding half marathon and Triathlon training. I am trying to combine a half marathon training plan into a tri training plan. the half mary plan has me running 5 times a week and one of those runs happens to fall on my long bike day. Would it be best to only run 4 times a week and cancel the run on the long bike day? The run is 30 minutes generally on this day but I don't wanna over work my muscles and promote injury.

How about a brick on that day?       ........... kill two birds with one stone.

I'm doing my first half end of May and I think I will be using one of Hal Higdon's plans...it only has run workouts 4x/week. And actually one of them is optional.

Thanks

I'm using a Higdon plan for my full in April, too! I really like them. Here's the half-mary link.

Sorry, forgot to confirm: yes, they're free.

I learned how to do flip turns today... and only plowed into the bottom of the pool once. It was actually a ton of fun.

Not sure why, but I've been a lot more active this winter outdoors than I've ever been - guess weather in the teens doesn't scare me any more for running. That's a good thing. I'm down 10 lbs and feeling fitter than I've been in a long time.

Should break the 500-minute mark for tri-specific workouts for the first time this week, too. I've got a 10 miler this afternoon yet to go. Met a bunch of new friends through local tri and running and cycling groups this winter. All in all, things are going well.

I'm getting sick of winter too! Unfortunately spring is still far away for my area.   Can't wait to be able to go outside for workouts!

Given a nice dry sunny day, what would be the lowest temperatures in which you guys would ride in?

What kind of gear you consider essential for cold wx riding?

Thanks!!

I am willing to, and do, ride down to about 30 degrees with sun. If it is wet out, then about 50 degrees.

I use winter tights for the cold, a very strong upper base layer, special warm socks, and that's about it.

Thanks a lot. Tomorrow is the big Saturday ride here in Savannah. Using your guidelines, I'll wait until tomorrow morning and then decide. I doesn't look good though.......
Sunday for sure will ride, in the afternoon it might reach 50 and dry.

I haven't had a chance to ride outside in about 2 months. Which is very unusual for the area. I'm hoping this weekend I can get a long bike in. My bike fitness is suffering.

Shane,
First of all, thanks a lot for your advice. The 30/50 degrees rule works fine. Still a bit painful but beats the hell out of the trainer!!!!
I got already a few decent rides and it feels great.
Looking at the forecast in your area, you should have a dry/sunny weekend. Still a bit cold, but hi's in the upper 40's.  Good luck.
My bike fitness has suffered as well due to travel. I'm leaving again tomorrow Undecided. Not complaining, glad to have a job, but I wish I could log some serious miles!!
Swimming it's becoming again the anchor of my fitness and I know I will pay on race day if I don't change that in a hurry!!!!

Still searching for racing wheels, but MAN! are they expensive!!! I was day dreaming with ZIPP's 404's but they are untouchable!  Do you know those VUELTA racing wheels? Are they any good???? I've seen a few on e-bay for decent money.... any sugestions???
Thanks and good luck riding on the weekend.

Here the snow just won't seem to melt.  Everytime the crews get the roads relatively clear we get another snow.  It's been either snow covered or mush and wet.  I can run outside, but I'll have to wait a little longer to bike outside.  Come on Spring!

I'm starting the 20 week 2x olympic program next week.  Can't wait to get into some wicked shape!  I'm 5'6" and 131 lbs.  I was at 186lbs when I started running, and then completing two marathons.  This year I plan to do the Fredericton Half, the Duncan Hadley Olympic Tri here in Fredericton, the Saint John Half and then the Moncton full marathon end of Oct.

Flashpoints are made by zipp and are cheaper too.. im in the market too. for some carbon wheels. I think if i finds a deal on ebay.. im just going to have to pull the trigger on it.. i get deals at the local bike shops.. i guess ill use the LBS as a last resort..

As for weather.. i ridden in below 40, with some serious winds.. so temp was low 30s.. not doing that again.. so 50, is it for me.. spin bike or drainer.. sucks but necessary evil.. lol

Maurice,
Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I've seen Flashpoints on e-bay, really cool looking whels, that might be the right option.
Are you going to go with clinchers or tubulars?  I'm a bit afraid of a repairing a flat tubular during a race. I like to know your thoughts on this..........

Im looking at Clinchers.. Clincher give me an opportunity to get back out there fast in case of flat.. Ive only dealt with tubes.. no real experience with tubulars. but i think there's glue involved. and with glue there has to be a good seal created so tire will hold air..

but

practicing taking tire on/off helps build some confidence(whether tubular or clincher). just incase you have a blow out..

Thanks for the advice about bilateral breathing.  After several weeks of just doing it, I feel a lot more comfortable and it seems to help me "balance" my stroke.

After a few weeks of searching on e-bay and a lot indecision:I GOT MY RACING WHEELS!!!

They are not the sexiest, deepest or disk. But they are feather light. Yeah Maurice, I ended up going with tubulars. Reading and talking to friends finally convinced me. The difference on max pressure and weight was the key thing. Like you said, I'll have to master repairing a flat and say my best prayers before a race so it doesn't happen!!!
Here they are, check them out:
