scotty930 - 2010-04-14 12:46 PM Today I did my first run over 10 miles ever. It wasn't too bad, except towards the last twenty minutes is when I started to feel the worst. This really is my first run where I have felt dehydrated and completely exhaust after running. It didn't help that this was probably one of the first nicer days that I ran in 70 degree weather or greater and actually with the sun beating down on me. So my question to everyone is what type of hydration/nutrition do you use for your longer runs? Do you use a hand held water bottle, Nathan hydration belt, Feulbelt, or do you prefer short loops with a water bottle you pick up as you go along? What about nutrition, do you take a gel during longer runs or some shot blocks or anything else?

I live in an area with HOT summers (some years we have 30+ days over 100 degrees in the summer, and seldom drop below 90 for a good 4+ months).  When I first started running, I don't think I paid enough attention to keeping hydrated and fueled on my long runs.  Once I made the commitment, I became aware of the huge difference they make in keeping the run enjoyable.

If we're talking 6 to 8 miles and the temps are reasonable, I usually carry a handheld.  I have two--an Amphipod and a Nathan.  I actually like the Nathan better.  It's smaller (10oz I think)--this works better since my hands are pretty small.  When I get into the 10+ mile range and especially if it's going to be hot, I use a Fuel Belt with two bottles.  It's just easier.  Less to distract me since it sits on my hips.  I usually fill one with water and one with Powerade or Gatorade.

As far as nutrition, I like the Cliff Shot gels--especially the mocha.  I usually take one about 45 minutes into the run and then another for every 45 minutes or so thereafter.

alexenafi - 2010-04-15 7:32 AM Hi everyone.
Went to the sports Dr yesterday. I have a Annular Disc Tear. No serious training until end May/beg June.
Looks like I'm walking the charity 10km May 2nd.
Have to do lots of walking, maybe some swimming and lots of core. Also managed to get a pass for back supported upper body weights.
Not supposed to sit. Thankfully I have a 9ft couch in my office.
I still have July, Aug, and Sept races in sight.
So will be redoing my training plan, trying out the pool and getting some core work in.

Thanks to Queen Zip for you inspires. Means a lot.

Fi

So sorry to hear about this.  Take it very easy and follow the doctor's orders--even if you feel like you could do more.  I have 20+ years in the workers' comp insurance industry so I've seen a lot of back injuries in my day.  The prospects for a good recovery are real--but you have to give it time.

Take care!

Responding a little late to the posts, but I was in San Francisco for two days for work...

Actually, one of the first books on tri that I read was the Triathlete's Bible.  I agree, as a newbie, a lot went over my head.  Still, a lot really made good sense--particularly all the information on developing an annual training plan.  I have since read a good half dozen or more books on the sport and spent a lot more time reading on the forums.  I feel like my understanding is coming together a bit more.  I think I might re-read The Triathlete's Bible and go from there.  I'm looking at plans in Gale Bernhardt's Training Plans for Multi Sport Athletes right now.  Seems to be a good complement to Joe Friel's training philosophy.  Your advice to pull from a couple of plans and tweak it seems like the way to go.

Thanks!

You're welcome!  I guess as long as you don't put too many hard workouts in the same week, and incorporate rest/recovery days/weeks it should work out Smile  I'm thinking I should probably find my copy of the training bible and re-read it as well!

G'morning group!  Hope training's going well for everyone!!  Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

I had a pretty good tempo run last night.  I found out that a good way for me to get faster was to run with people who are faster than me!  I was running with some friends, and they basically dropped me within the first 5 min (they're waaaaaay faster than me).  After a while they turned around and came back and ran with me the second half of my run.  It definitely motivated me to go faster to try to keep up with them, even though I could tell they were holding back and going slower so that they didn't lose me again.  But yeah, my mile splits got faster toward the second part of my run.  I don't think I would have run that fast by myself!

TGIF everyone!

Finally decided on training plans for the year.

Using the Olympic distance plan in this month's Triathlete magazine and the Hal Higdon Novice 3 marathon training plan.  Both plans are lower in frequency and volume.  Taking it day-by-day to see how it goes to determine if I can actually handle the training volume.  Have a Plan B and C if I need to adjust race schedule/training.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

Looking forward to a real coached swim session tonight.....
I have an idea which plan I am going to use for my NIM but haven't really nailed down the start date.  I know it will need to start middle of next month so I guess I need to look at it more

You bring up a good point.  If you have the opportunity to train with people faster than you, go for it!  There's a guy in my running group who's a 1:20 half marathoner.  He rips off sub-7s like it was nothing and I always have to work to keep up.  I find that most group workouts I'm working harder than I do on my own

Yep getting that extra push sometimes makes a run that much!!! Hey you said your mile splits got faster towards the end so does that mean you negative split the second half of run?

Question for those with Garmins/running watches (I have the Garmin 405):  I went for a run along the fox river trail again today and for the second time my watch would not work.  It is almost as if the watch doesn't work on trails, only works on roads?  Anyone else run into this?  Is there a watch that does work on trails?  Is there just a mode I need to change to on the watch?

This is super important for me because I am not that good at knowing how my body feels right now, so I have depended on HR or pace to keep me in line.  Like Wednesday, I ran with someone that was much faster and because of it I was huffing and puffing and had to walk a few times.  I might feel good in the beginning but rise above threshold pretty fast if I am way out of my pace.

HELP PLEASE

Does it depend on satellite to function like a GPS?  Might not be picking up there.

Next week DuNats for me.  May 8th Kenetic HIM (That will be my first)

Got a 64 mile ride with 4 mile brick followed by 15 mile run (all time longest run)

Training been pretty intense 6 days a week with two two a days.  Not much time for keep up with the group.  Good luck to those racing, good training for those training, and good healing for those needing to heal.

I think it does depend on a satellite.  What does that mean, it won't pick up on trails?

Is there a better watch out there that will give me time, pace and distance???

It's not the trails per se.  It's obstructions--tall trees, mountains, buildings.  Basically to work correctly the GPS has to 'sight' the satellite above in order to triangulate correctly.  If something obstructs that, it drops the signal.

I have the 305.  In general the only time I ever have problems is when running in downtown San Francisco because of the buildings.  If you run trails enough and continue to have problems, you might consider adding the foot pod.  That works off your running cadence to calculate pace and distance rather than the satellite.  I use a foot pod on the treadmill because most treadmills are not calibrated correctly.  The foot pod can be off somewhat if you don't calibrate it on a track, but at least it's consistently off.  Run with the foot pod in areas where the GPS signal might be dropped, and run with the GPS on where it won't.

Michelle nailed it with the obstructions.  I have the 405 and the only time I've had issues was running through some heavily wooded areas in the mountains of Colorado.
