titeloops - 2011-01-04 5:01 PM Started my HIM training program today, and the post Holidays purification diet. Thought I should shed the 10lbs I've put on over the past 2 months. Gonna be rough handling the 2 a-days while starving! Cry

Do you keep a food log/journal?  Or do you just keep a running calorie total in you head each day?

The food journal is the best method I've used. I'll admit it hard some days.  You're hungry at 1800 and you've already consumed your calories for the day.

I know I can look up calorie ranges for most things online but the cafeteria at my office has a self serve salad bar which by weight.  How do I figure out how many calories are in my salads?  Just estimate based off my normal salad?

What are you diet ideas  I need to do the same.. I started my HIM program yesterday.. Dam the weight comes back so quickly..
Nothing crazy about the diet, I just cut the calories down to about 2000 daily. I might have a few hundred calories to play with, but 2000 is the target for now. As my workout volume increases I'll take the calories up. Remind me again what half you are doing?

My plan is to do one on May14 looking at Florida 70.3 or the REV 3 in Knoxville..Then I will do some Olympics close to home and then Augusta 70.3.. Thought of doing New Orleans but waiting on a shoulder to heal so I'm not sure if I would be ready in April..

This is a great question. The best I've been able to do is ignore the salad unless I'm overloading it and go easy (and keep up with) on the dressings. I typically try to use a light or an oil based so it's not so bad.

One of the books I just read talked about Ultra-training people will gourge themselves on salads b/c they're not heavy, full of water, and the calorie count is almost negligable compared to what they're burning....

A large salad, with only veggies is usually no more than 300 calories.  It's when you add nuts, fruit, meats, croutons and dressing that bump the salad to the 800-1000 calorie range.  And that happens pretty quick.

Did my first swim in several months tonight.  I have my work cut out for me.  At least I have 3 months before my HIM to work on not drowning during the race

Very True!

But, replace all the meats, nuts, etc. with a 1/4 wheel of cheese (gouda - yum) or a boiled egg and you'll be surprised.

For those of you who are doing the cycling program, how are you rides working out? I'm almost through week 2, and the workouts are definitely starting to get tougher. I'm a little concerned about some of the data I'm seeing when I examine my rides. Looks like I'm still spending most of my time in power zone 3 Tempo. Was just reading in Coggan the other day that this is where most cyclist live. Not a bad thing, you just become very good at tempo rides, and do not improve above that. I'm curious as to where you folks are on the plan, and what the data is telling you. BTW, wish I has read Coggan before my IM, unbeliveable the data I had and didnt know how to use.

That's what I'm worried about.  I don't like dressing so I only use a little (or so I think) oil and vinegar and they normally have some chickpeas or some type of beans which I like to add.  Other than that it's just veggies.  Should I try to estimate the amount of beans/chickpeas and oil get get a better number or am I making this too complicated?

I actually read Coggan's whole book before buying my powertap.  I was having a hard time dropping the money on it so I figured $20 for a book was a good investment to help me decide.  I'm planning to start the program over next week.

what are some ideas for getting my biking motivation back..   I enjoy swimming and running, but to get on the bike is tougher. Plus I actually like riding my rollers more than outside, well now that it's dark and chilly out.

I"m hoping since the bachelor is back on that will jump start it, for some reason I enjoying biking to that show.

what do you all do when your motivation is a bit lacking.

Speaking of all the food stuff I just ordered the Racing Weight book from Amazon.  Probably too late to help for this half marathon, but I'll let the group know if it looks pretty good or not.  It has gotten great reviews.

Run and swim. ;-)

Haven't gotten on my bike in a month.  Don't miss it right now.  Heck, I'm not swimming much, either - I can't force myself to do more than 1500 at a time right now.  When we finally get good weekend ride weather and I can head out I'll get interested again.  But right now I'm breaking my body down pretty good with the 30+ mile weeks for this half marathon.

1:37 or bust, baby!

Some of you posted them already, but what are your top 3 racing goals this year?

1. Run a sub 1:30 half marathon
2. Race a sub 2:20 Olympic
3. Run a sub 19 minute 5K

I should be able to do 1 and 3 by this fall.  I really need to find the pool if goal 2 is going to happen.

I havn't put them down on paper yet, but these are my prelim thoughts (I will confirm later on):

1) Race a sub 3:00 Olympic
2) Complete a HIM (still debating this one, as I just need to commit)
3) Run a sub 2:00 HM (needs lot of improvement to accomplish this)
4) Improve my 5k & 10k PR (no specific goal yet, as I need to take a closer look at what's possible)

1.  1:37 Half marathon
2.  3.3 mile swim better than 1:25
3.  Sub 2:30 Oly
4.  Sub 1 hour 40k TT

I think I can do 1-3.  1 is tough, though, as it seems my hard to believe my training paces will lead to being able to hold that time.  Mental block, maybe.  I'm gonna do 2 - I think 1:20 is in reach, in fact.  Coulda done 1:25 last year, but I made sure I finished the course with aplomb (and I did, and it was a spectacular race).  I would have had 3 easily this year if the heat index down at the beach wasn't 120.  I think I can do 2:20 given mild conditions, to be honest.  4, on the other hand, will be a massive personal achievement if I could do it.

Number 4 is on my long term list but I don't have balls to put it down.

Number 4 would be a very good accomplishment.  I can't even dream about it.
