We should make today a national holiday: Jack LaLanne Day.  The man is such an inspiration.

"I train like I'm training for the Olympics or for a Mr. America contest, the way I've always trained my whole life. You see, life is a battlefield. Life is survival of the fittest." Then he segued into a mantra I'm sure I heard dozens of times as a very young boy: "How many healthy people do you know? How many happy people do you know? Think about it. People work at dying, they don't work at living. My workout is my obligation to life. It's my tranquilizer. It's part of the way I tell the truth--and telling the truth is what's kept me going all these years." - Jack LaLanne

Great quote....RIP Jack LaLanne

LOVE that quote.  Love the sentence "People work at dying, the don't work at living.

And I also love "It's my tranquilizer".  That's EXACTLY what training is for me.  It's my natual ritalin.  Keeps me nice and calm.  Smooooth

What is everyone up to?  It has been pretty quiet on here lately.  Any specific training folks are looking to accomplish this weekend?  I am shooting for a 2 hour endurance spin class on Sunday.

Greg

Tomorrow's workout is a 20-mile trainer ride followed by 3 miles on the treadmill.  I HATE THE TREADMILL, but it's going to be 20 degrees and windy here tomorrow.  Maybe an HTFU opportunity, but my cold weather running gear is a little sketchy.

20 degrees, that sounds like a tropical breeze!  Today it was -15 with wind chills at -30, looks like I will be on the treadmill for a long time.

X2...-15 here too this morning with plenty of wind. Might get up to zero today for the high. Should be in the 20's tomorrow though and I am so excited (very sad, I know). Might get outside and run.

Excellent Work, Men.  Now let's see if Gang Green can Get R Done in the cold.

HOW IS THE REST OF THE GROUP DOING???  CHIME IN PEEPS!!  Good, bad or indifferent -- we want an update!

I have gotten back to the pool. I do not think I even visited the pool in January of last year. I view this as a very positive thing. I got in some great saddle time this week to include a couple of spin classes. My legs seem to be responding well to the increased volume. I ran once on the treadmill and was hoping to run more. Overall training was up a bit last week, which was great. I view all of this as very positive things. Now about the scale....

Beat ya!  Twas -20 when I came to work - I think it now feels like -15.  I would still run in this.  I learned last year that my limit is -26 but then I wasn't wearing thermal underwear.  If I had those on I might be able to go lower.  Maybe I'll have a chance to see this year.  SUCKS that my hubby is out of the country because my running options SUCK now.  I do have a rickety old treadmill in my basement I just have to be VERY careful running on it - one wrong move and I might whack my head on a joist and knock myself out LOL  I'm a klutz so this isn't as far fetched as it sounds.... hence my lack of running since he's left!

last week was good week of training:
swam twice
ran twice
did one session of wts
rode 17miles Saturday morning

this afternoon swam 1700 yds non stop.  feels good.

so need some feedback:
1.  how do I get faster on the bike portions?  any drills?
2  I think my swim stroke in the water could be better, any good site to show how the stroke in water should be like?

Yep...the swimsmooth site is good stuff.  And I look nothing like that swimming.

There are a bunch of drills in the beginning swimming programs on this site, too...things like thumb drag, fist drill, shark fin, etc., all with the idea of improving your swim stroke.  My big problem with swimming is that I have to maintain a certain speed in the water to keep my legs up, and I'm trying to find that perfect balance point.  Sometimes I get it for like 10-12 strokes then it falls apart.  Those drills really have helped, though, and I do them with a pull buoy to make sure I do them correctly.

Total Immersion is another beginner swim program (people either love it or hate it...you could spend days reading the forums on BT about it).  It really does work for some people, others not as much.

I found that simply riding my bike a lot more than was in my training program helped with my speed.  Maybe ride a couple miles every other ride in the big ring on a higher gear than you would normally ride.  I also ride in pretty hilly areas so I naturally become stronger.

Well after a couple good weeks I slacked off on any training the last couple days but I am not going to beat myself up over it. In the past I have let these types of delays overcome my training - I am an all in or all out kinda guy. But I have come to peace that it doesn't matter if I miss a day or two...I can still focus on the bigger picture - consistency doesn't necessarily mean every hour of every day...it is ok to miss a day or two as long as I get back at it.

And so I did today...nice CrossFit session tonite Looking forward to a good week.

Jeff,
With regard to building speed on the bike, now is a good time of the year for strength/weight training.  This will help to generate strength which leads to power/speed during the season.  I'm currently doing squats, extensions, curls, lunges, etc.  How much weight will depend on your starting point, but you will be surprised how fast one can gain strength in their legs.  I will taper this off as I head into late spring and start transitioning to more endurance vice strength work.

If you are doing trainer work, intervals are great for building endurance and power.  There are endless possibilities with intervals on a trainer.

All things considered the best way to get faster on a bike is to ride with roadies/groups who are  stronger than you.  I have made good gains riding with local groups who train at a much higher level then I ever would on my own. At first I could only stay with the group for a few miles, eventually I was able to hang on for the entire ride.  Basically with a competitive group of riders you will do endless intervals without even realizing it.  I can go on for awhile on this but in general it is great training.

   Hope this helps.

January Assignment

Okay everyone.  Here is this month's assignment.  Many of you may have completed this already, or have half of it done, but I am strong suggesting we ALL have this accomplished by the end of this MONTH! So we have plenty of time between now and January 31st.

A.Book a Destination.  Sign up for a Spring/Summer race.  Sprint tri, 5k road race, Olympic ... no matter the race or distance you must "Pay" for it in full and add it to your BT Calendar.  If you need help picking a race, or adding it to your BT blog, just ask.  Also, if you need help picking a Blog Title, think of something that includes that Race title!!!  This way you will see it everyday and it will help to keep that destination/goal in front of you constantly.  Like they say, Keey your eye on the prize.

B.) Get a Road Map to the Destination.  In other words, pick and commit to a plan.  If you don't have a plan, ask for help.  I will help you find/devise one.  If your race isn't until late summer, myself and other group members will help you devise a "base bulding plan" to get you to the start date of your plan.

That's it.  Simple.  Book the race: by making the financial commitment it will help motivate you.  Picking a plan is a visual road map that will effectively and efficiently have you arriving at your destination in the easiest most prepared manner.

Following my own assignment, I officially registered for the Rev3 Quassy 70.3 in June - and I booked a hotel for Rev3.  My road map to this destination is my Be IronFit Ironman plan, which includes a half Ironman race and one week taper leading up to it.  Since this race is only 4 months away, it helps me to keep focus and stay motivated.  Like Ironman Lake Placid, this is a hilly Bike and Run course so I am going to slowly incorporate similar terrain elevation into my Run and Bike training.  The on-course drink will be Cerasport, so I am going to be puchasing and training with that nutrition two months prior to the event.  (When I ran the Steamtown Marathon the on-course sport drink was ALL-Sport,  I trained with it and it paid off on race day.)

LAST WEEK OF JANUARY PEEPS!!  LET'S FINISH UP THE MONTH STRONG.

I can totally relate to your comments. I am built the same way. It has taken me a long time to understand that it is okay to miss a training session or so and NOT feel guilty. For me, there has to be some balance between family, training and work. I know that when I get busy that the training gets pinched, and I used to feel very guilty about this. Training to me is "me" time and taking too much "me" time feels wrong. However, I do this because I want to live a healthy lifestyle and I like racing. I like to train and race! Therefore, it is okay to be a little selfish and take time to train. So I am back to the balance issue. Luckily, I have a wife and family that are very supportive of my training/racing. Therefore, don't beat yourself up, just get right back at it!

Great questions, Jeff.  And some of the group members have already given you great advice.  Here's some more.  I'm finding out that we are all an 'experiment of one'; however, there are key fundamentals to each sport and one of swimming's is all about technique - which you know, cause you're asking how to improve your stroke.  Here's what I wrote in an inspire this morning to KathyG.  This is what works for me lately - two things 1.) Using the pool buoy for 400 meters after my warm-up. While using the pool bouy I entirely focus on my upper quadrant and really focus on my pull and high elbow.  Then, when I remove the pull bouy for the rest of my workout, I try and replicate that same body position (head down, upper body out of the water and legs HIGH) and I just add a slight, easy flutter kick making sure to keep the ankles close   2.) I imagine the top of the water as ground, and I am literally pulling myself along ATOP this mystical surface, sliding and gliding - my arms moving the mass behind me. Trippy.

For visuals, here are two good triathlon-specific tutorials.  The first one is REALLY good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYt8x_7uL48&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3McvmvTiQg

Bottom line, is to get faster on the Bike and in the water is consistent patience and 'time in the water' and 'time in the saddle'.  If you want to get strong on the bike, look-up Jorge's Winter Cycling Plan.  I did it last winter and the winter before, and each time when Spring came - I started riding outside with an unprecedented amount of fitness.  \

Hope this stuff helps

Just be honest, George   I would compare it to an acquired taste -- such as coffee.  First time people usually drink black coffee, the initial reaction is it taste bitter and yucky.  But the pleasurable effect of the caffeine, how it helps us to get our day started, slowly turns our mind and tastebuds (and atleast for me) I thoroughly enjoy the taste of coffee.  Same thing with the CeraSport.  At first swig I almost gagged.  I though it had gone bad/soured.  But I talked to a few other guys and they were like, "Nope.  That's how it tastes."  And because it worked for well for me, kept me very hydrated and fueled, by the end of the run I was loving it.  One of those things, I guess

Understood. The same thing happened to me with Hammer Perp. Mixed up a bunch, went on a nice long ride, took a big swig and thought...you have got to be kidding me. The good news is that it only got worse as it got warmer. I had heard so many good things about it I had to keep trying it out. Eventually, I learned to not mind it so much. Come to think of it, the stuff that they served at IMUSA last year was not exactly the best stuff I ever tasted. About halfway through the ride, I was really missing the lemon-lime gatorade endurance from the prior year. Then again, at some point during the race, everything starts to taste kind of blah (oh, except for the chicken broth). I still think that I am not putting it on my list of nutrition that I want to try.

So day 2.  It's like I have to re-train my body to wake up at 5am!!  I need to make my bed less comfortable LOL

Kept the intensity low as I'm still coughing a lot but it's done.  I'm still having a tightening in my upper right ham and wonder if I need to go back for yet another bike fit or if it's related to some GI issues I was having last October.  Or maybe my body just needs to remember what it's like to be back in the saddle.

Anyone else have this issue?

I got back on my trainer sometime in early December... I am just now feeling comfortable!  I don't think it normally takes people this long to adjust - it's just me.  Give your body sometime to adjust.  And stuff like that (hammy tightness) I'll log in my 'personal notes' on my BT Blog, and next week I'll look back at my training and see if the tightness has gotten worse or (in most cases) have forgotten about it and see realize that it's gone.

Cool I'll see how it goes.  I got my acronymns mixed up - I meant to write ITB vs. GI but I think you understood what I was trying to say.  I'm not even sure it was my ITB.  I had some tightening around the time of my half marathon but nothing since but ya... now on the bike I have this uncomfortable tightening - and if I had to take a guess - I'd say it's the femoris.

You can skip a workout here and there, but we all want to see you do the OLY!  :-)
