I was just checking out the tri schedule for this summer. Nothing starts here until June so I do have time. Last year I did 5 but were all towards the end of the summer. I think I will try some in June as well.

I increased my distance on the run by 10% (.1 miles)
and increased my speed on the spinbike, up to 16:00mph - it was about 70 rpm for a while, then 80, then a sprint at the at end at 100 rpm.

then I did *super slow* butterflies on the incline bench with 10# dumbells.  I'm *really* feeling that, so I'm going to take some advil before bed.

I am only 1/2 way done with my water for today... oh well not a perfect day

I got it all in, but am probably short as I worked up a good sweat working out....

tomorrow's a new day!

blue skies!

Hi everybody. I have question for y'all.

Does anyone know any good strength exercises to strengthen hip muscles for biking? One of my hips is significantly weaker than the other. I do single-legged pedalling on the trainer and spinner to help that, but I'm wondering if there is something more I can do. My running coach once gave me a set of hip strengthers to help on the run. Although I'm sure they would not hurt my strength on the bike, I know they were meant for runners. Any ideas here?

Thanks!

Everyday I have met or exceeded the water intake goal.  I have such an itch to run outside, but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon...the thermometer read -32 this morning.  My shin splints are still an issue so instead of jogging or running I'm using my elliptical.  I should really think about getting into the pool one of these days.

Hey Les,
How about signing up for a 5 or 10K...they have these all through the winter, just to keep you motivated to train. Nothing like a race on the schedule to keep you going

Marcy are you sure its your hips? Often times it is several muscles that are weak.

There are several hip exercises listed in the articles section on BT. One that can be done with a band specifically for hip flexors. You might want to combine this with some glute work as well and some quad work. Where they are all connected there is often weakness in the other muscles as well.

We skiied yesterday for half day, the wind picked up and it was toooooo cold, thought it would blow us off the lift. Woke this am still pretty sore, -11 wind chill on the mountain so we ended our vacation a day early. So I will start back tomorrow with the training. Not sure what will work best but I'm sure I will find out.
Have a appt for a massage also. Set up one with a chiropractor on Monday too.

I've been on the mark with the water. Congrats to all for keeping well hydrated.

Thanks for the response, Mav. I think it is my hip simply because that is what some PTs and coaches have told me. I think my quads are pretty strong and I do have a series of exercises that are geared more at the glutes for running.

I reviewed this question with my Pilates instructior last night (who is also a triathlete). She recommended side leg raises, sometimes called rose wall arcs. She also said you can do them standing against a wall with a band around your ankles.

I'll try doing those more regularly because the weakness in my left leg is really noticeable to me when I single-leg pedal on the bike. Will also ask the cycling coach on Sunday.

BTW- I like the sound of your PT. The PTs I have gone to have always insisted that I go there 2x per week and I feel its very demanding on my schedule considering that they know I know how to do the exercises and will get them done on my own. Its nice yours is willing to work with you once per month over the long term. I've had my share of muscle imbalances and poor form, so that is why I added in pilates and some of the running/swimming/cycling coaching that I do from time to time.

All the Best!

Morning!
Today's workout done! 20 min run, 20 min bike, 20 min swim - kinda of reverse tri I guess. Now off to work on the water goal for the day. I pretty much substituted wine for water yesterday so I have some work to do today!
Good point Mav, I will look for something in March. I realllllllyyyyy hate the cold ( I am a total wimp) and I won't be running much outside until then.
Have a great Saturday everyone.

Morning all!

Terry glad you are home safe and sound. Les, it looks like you had your own tri yesterday...great job!!!!

Marcy, my PT is a triathlete and he knows that I workout 6/7 days/week so I will do the work he gives me. I email him and he answers any questions or concerns.

I managed to get a trainer ride in yesterday and some strength work. I may try to run today because we are getting yet another storm this week. I did hit the water goal the last 2 days!!!!

I think Michelle is still riding her trainer!!LOL

I found this article ob BT and thought those of you who had bike questions might find it interesting Triathlon Bike or Road Bike?

Hope you are all having a good weekend.

I am sooo sorry I have been out of the net but life here has hit us hard...we left for an appt to check out the seriousness of his TBI (sustained in Iraq) then went to McChord AFB to have a fun day at the zoo on Sat. Unfortunately we were woke up at 5:00am by a phone call from my hubbies ex wife telling us that his son had passed away during the night. We are leaving tomorrow for the funeral. Please keep him in your prayers!!

With that being said, I do have my trainer set up...felt I should throw that in to lighten things up a bit

Prayers to you Michelle.

I started back a the training today, bike 25 minutes, maintained 90rpms and 5.55 miles. Strength training went better than expected, (ribs are still pretty sore) . Added a couple more exercises to the program, shoulders and triceps(those are my weaker points). Able to up the weights.  Feeling pretty good, will take the dog for a nice long walk later, it helps to relax.
I plan to start with the learn to swim program, I really feel like I need some extra time with the swim. I have never done any structured swimming and I think this program will help me. I start in the pool tomorrow.Smile

Michelle,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I'm back from my post race vacation.  We work so hard throughout the year that it's important to remember to take time to celebrate the successes.  I try to do that after each a-race.  It's important for us to get away together, have a glass of wine and stay out a little later and sleep in a little longer than we're used to when training.

Good trainer ride this morning.  Burned 1676 calories in 1:06min.  That was fun.  Today is a good day to sweat.

Cheers,
Mark

Mark, I am glad you took a little break. I am not particularly good about"resting". Recovery is so important...especially as we age. So much more prone to injury when not recovered and rested.

Terry, how did the swimming go?????????? One faller used to be a competative swimmer I am sure he can give you some tips. Are your ribs better?

I managed to do an hour trainer ride and 30 mins of rowing today. Met my water challenge for the day too
We are scheduled for another snow storm on Wed...cant wait!!!!

We need to liven things up in here so I have decided we will do a february challenge. On top of water daily we are going to have a HIM or IM challenge. You have to swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 and run 13 over the entire month of Feb   OR  Swim 2.4, bike 112, run 26.2. These totals are over the entire month....Who's in?????????????

Come on...you know you want to!!!!!

Hi all, spent the am at the Dr, I've actually fractured 2 ribs, not much can be done but to let them heal. He said I can workout as long as I ..don't push the pain to much. I worked out yesterday and feel okay today. I didn't swim today I've be having some vertigo since the fall Dr thinks it may be difficult to swim and it may make it worse(some inner ear thing). I will see what tomorrow brings, I'm going to try and run or walk and attempt the pool.

Anyone with any ideas for out to the pool exercise that will help when I do get back to the swim?

Wow- quiet group today. Found us on page 2.
Completed my weight training and 20 minute run. Had a chance to do this right after work which I don't normally- great energy level. Normally I work out after 8pm and it is often a struggle to motivate myself that late. However, once summer hits and it is light out later it is much easier to go for a run/bike at night. Can't wait!
