Admittedly I am a little slow but is all of this correct?

Race day event parking is at Stroudsburg HS?

Race starts at Smithfield Beach?

T-1 is at Smithfield Beach?

There is a shuttle going from the High School to the race start?

Thanks

Yep, there is a shuttle from high school to race start, and also from the Fernwood resort.  Check out pages 14-15 of the athlete guide.

DreamChaser - Thanks for the info. Guess I'm just really nervous and excited as I have never done any triathalon so its hard to know what to expect considering. Everything is completely new to me which honestly is part of the fun for me. I'm deranged that way.

Best of luck to everyone!

Take your time in transition, and just enjoy your first Triathlon, and first Half!  You are brave

Best advice I was given for my first half is: Stay Within Yourself.  For your first 70.3 (unless you are genetically gifted or a former collegiate athlete in Swimming, Biking or Running) you should just Swim, Bike and Run at an aerobic pace you feel you can hold all day.  If with 10k to go on the Run you feel really good (not likely )  then let her rip for the last 6 miles.

And just remember, whatever time you finish will be an instant PR!

Dream Chaser - 2011-09-26 10:40 AM Some more positive news - looks like the gravel road Larsens Lane, which apparently has a large hill, will not be paved so they've re-routed to Lessig Lane which (rumor has it) is much flatter and faster!!

Dream Chaser - I was just checking in to this - according to elevation on MMR, both Lessig and Larsens lane are less than a 1/2 mile long and start with a slight downhill that flattens out - is there a different section of the course that was re-routed?  I haven't had a chance to ride it, so not familiar with which roads had gravel and which didn't.

Honestly, I know absolutely nothing about the Bike course.  I'm relaying dribs and drabs of information from comments on the Facebook page.

Just did a short swim in a nearby lake.  Temps here have been down near or lower than race location, also been raining the last couple days (including while I was out there).  Eye opener at first, but got used to it.  Wish I knew the water temp, but would guess it's in the 60's based off how it felt compared to some races over the last couple years, somewhat close to the river temp.  Only using a sleeveless wetsuit and I don't have much insulation.  I'm still excited.  Caring less about the exact outcome and more about just being able to go strong through everything.  Thinking of this as more of an adventure series now.

I must say this would be a huge disappointment for me. I rather they just shorten the swim and remove the upstream portions than eliminate it completely. So many reasons why Frown

igokiev I agree the swim is most intimidating, in fact I practically taught myself how to swim starting in Feb.  I mean I could stay afloat but I looked like a wounded fish splashing all around.  After watching videos and others swim I feel like I've come a long way.  My confidence increased once I completed an open water 1 mile swim on Sept. 10th in 37 minutes.  This is my first Half Ironman and second triathlon overall, I completed a sprint back in July and was pleasantly surprised with my results.  Good luck to you and the other 1,998 athletes.

cyclone31 - Thank you and good luck to you this Sunday!

I'm proud to know that my competitors are tough and lean Iron-machines

I would be so upset if we can't swim!  It would be a 69.1, instead of a 70.3!  I don't think there are any stickers for 69.1!!!!!

YellYellYell

Hopefully the swim goes on.

If they cancel the swim, does it revert to just the bike and run, or do they throw in a 10k first, similar to sprint/oly events?

Still mentally planning on the swim, this could be called right up to that morning...

Wouldn't be able to do a run/bike/run because T1 and T2 are in different locations.

They just cancelled the swim at New Orleans and Steelhead, no extra run.  Given the logistics of this race (Two Transitions), it's highly likely to be the same here.

The info from the race people is that if (and I stress if) the swim is cancelled it will be a bike/run. Race organizers seem to think that the river is still dropping and will only get better as the weekend comes on. I am with the rest of you! Let's swim!

If you want to monitor the water levels see link http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=phi&gage=tksn4&view=1%2C1%2C1%2C1%2C1%2C1%2C1%2C1&toggles=10%2C7%2C8%2C2%2C9%2C15%2C6

Keep in mind it doesn't have to rain on the exact spot our swim takes place, the rivers and tributaries that run into the Delaware upstream are key to the water levels.

I want the swim so I say we walk upstream through the woods and make the swim with the current as a last resort

All that area upstream is more important than the immediate town.  So much more water collected.

And if the cancel, we should go upstream ahead of time and swim/float down!  The shuttles start getting there early enough for it.

Seriously guys, I really think the swim is going to be cancelled. There has been tons of rain recently and flood warnings for the Pocono's much of which drains into this area. I hope not but I doubt it.

On a related topic. Being from PA this seems like an awfully late time of year for an event like this. Anyone else think it will probably be scheduled for a different time of year in the near future?

Potentially - I thought when I first saw the date that the weather was going to be a crapshoot.  Early October around here can be anywhere from 40 degrees and cold rain to 90 degrees and middle-of-the-July humid.  I think there are issues with tons of other races, including other IM brand events in the Northeast, that go on in August and September.  I'm sure at least for the first year they wanted very little competition.

Water level data (see link below) does not look particularly promising at this time. Up to 15 ft from 8 ft. overnight with expectation of max levels near 17 ft this evening. I'm GUESSING we need to see levels near 7-8 ft to swim. Not impossible (barring additional rains), but hard to fathom.

To state the obvious, nothing anyone can do now but wait and watch. Time to focus on how to enjoy the event under any conditions.

Safe travels to all.
