Fer, dcrainmaker review is pretty good (if you are a tech junkie) like me but in short, HRM does not work in water due to loss of electrical signals in water. Current GPS technology does not work under water (for any GPS gadget out there). But 310xt is nicer than 305 overall... enjoy it. |

However, here is a good link fron dcrainmaker with info on using it for open water swims. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/06/new-garmin-forerunner-310xt-open... great info thank's Gabo, I'll update my 310 asap, this is something I would use in my next OWS, instead of the swim cap method.Fer Cuevas - 2011-05-05 8:09 PMHi Ernesto and fellow BT members, sorry I was MIA, or should I said MIWork? but I'm back and ready to roll. this afternoon I was swiming indoors with this new garmin 310 XT and when I upload the info, nothing hapened, I just don't see the benefit of the swimm feature. or Am I doing something wrong? Fernando,I have never used a 310 xt but I believe the swimming features are for open water, indoors it is nothing more than a chronometer. Also, heart rate monitors do not work underwater (at least the traditional ones).By the way how's Guatemala doing this days? I spend a couple of days in Guatemala City and Antigua, Men, Beautiful places You have there. I ate in Portal de los Angeles the best Angus I have ever tried. Member 61 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group - CLOSED I feel like I had a pretty good week this week. I pushed it on the run a bit this morning to keep my average pace under 10 minutes a mile. I know that's terrible, but it's what I can do at this point. As I was extending my stride and trying to work on my posture toward the end of the run, I was rewarded by a new and interesting pain in my left knee (felt like it was behind my knee). Seems fine now, so it may have just been over-stretched. Anyway, this is my worry. I'd like to improve my performance without blowing out some body part I'd like to use later. Of the three guys I started training with last year, I'm the only one not beset with injuries at this point, and I'd like to keep it that way. So what should I be concentrating on to improve my run? Is there a safe way to introduce intervals (if that's the right next step) that will help me improve with minimal risk of injury? Or should I just keep on doing what I'm doing? Also, anyone have any advice on how to fix the HRM on my Garmin 305? Do you suppose a local bike shop might have some expertise in getting it connected? I've tried everything in troubleshooting guide except the electrostatic gel (which doesn't seem like it should be necessary). I sure would like to add that component to my training. Any input is appreciated! -Mike |

Regular 265 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group - CLOSED From reviews and my couple of uses, swim workout gives jagged lines rather than proper route because it loses GPS signal goes awry with your watch going under water. For accurate GPS data recording with 310xt, consider putting it in your swim cap. Looks dorky but works way better. Otherwise it would be giving highly inaccurate swim distance. First pic is 310xt on wrist and second is keeping in swim cap. (images belong to dcrainmaker)

I've signed up for a 5K on Sunday, even though the race I really care about (other than my first Oly tri in June) is a half marathon a week from tomorrow. But my wife and two of my daughters are running the 5k, so I am too. And I WILL PR. Guaranteed. (as long as I finish). Easy, since I've never run a timed 5k before. I'm planning on running it as fast as I can, basically under the theory that 3 miles can't ruin a taper. Does that make sense? |

You're right, 5Ks are meant to be run real fast, but with a warmup you'll do even better. Jog an easy mile right before the race, also position yourself on the FRONT, trust me on that or you'll spend two minutes dodging people. Even though it is a super short distance, build your pace. Your first mile should still be the slowest. GOOD LUCK!!!! |

You might get the "Ironman blues" for a while. You might experience a mild depression and this is because you have invested so much into the race that the new lack of major goals beats you down. Most people went through it and it is temporary, in a couple of months you'll be enthusiastic again, maybe planning another race.Hi Ernesto and gang, I just survived the first week after the IM of complete inactivity and, while probably beneficial, made me feel totally lethargic and tired all the time. Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Two Week Test evillarroel - 2011-04-30 6:12 PM jdiis - 2011-04-30 2:08 PM Ernesto, I'm on day 6 of the Two Week Test. I've been dehydrated, very thirsty. I have also had headaches and leg cramps and felt a little out of sorts. I've read that those can be side effects. Was that your experience also? Not feeling fully functional, I've backed way off of training and tried to keep everything very aerobic. My bike ride today was a little bit of an exception to the aerobic training. Just looking for a little boost from you rather than sugar .
The two week test by Maffettone will make you feel weak for a while, until your body actually makes the switch to fats for fuel. It will take less than two weeks but you might feel like crap for a few days. That is actually good news, it means you're carb dependent. Keep in mind that carbs are not from hell, we need them and a lot, this is just a test and take it for what it is. Good carbs are the fuel for your exercise in conjunction with fat glycolisis. Day 13 of test. Need confirmation of my interpretation of my bike rides before and during test:
The last two were during day 6 and day 13 of the two-week test. The last one was almost effortless and I burned twice as many calories. I'm guessing I have hit the fat stores, is that correct? I have lost 5 pounds and most of it in my belly (yea!). Tomorrow is the last day of the test. I'm hoping that when I re-introduce good carbs, that my leg cramps, headaches and fatigue (very abnormal for me) will go away. |

I'm venturing into the barefoot running arena, so I'm paying attention to what you are doing. Actually, I'm not sure I am going to run hard. This event is for a good cause, but it's a bogus run. They advertised a competitive timed 5k and a fun non-competitive 5k (at different times). I signed up for the competitive 5k. When I went today to pick up my bib I asked where the chip was. No chip. No one bothering to even match the race number to the racer. If you look closely at the web page, it says only the top 5 finishers (out of probably a thousand) will be timed. This is what they are calling a "timed" "competitive" "race". Bleah. I may just run at whatever pace my 14 year old daughter runs, which will probably be about 11 minutes per mile, although she may not want to be seen with me in my funny shoes. I may run it completely barefoot. |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group - CLOSED The trick of putting the 305 under the swim cap works PERFECT and it is accurate. Not even the 310XT (on the wrist) with the new software beats it. Here's proof: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/53428446 Endorfun Sports (the race organizer) is super accurate when measuring their swim courses. My Garmin recorded 1.23 miles (keep in mind that I stopped it on the beach after running a bit) so it is perfectly 1.2 miles. |
