Nutrition question. If i burn about 2300 calories on a 3 hour bike, how much should i be taking in an hour?

The bigger questions is, How many calories can your body absorb in an hour?

Looks like everyone is settling in nicely and the panic has not started ha. Triplebypat hope to see you at Gal HIM. To bad there is not a BT tent it would be interesting to have a meet and great. Since fancy pants lance is going to be there it looks like there will be some great riders and a good crowd.

Once the bike arrives you can pretty much come & go with it. Like another poster, I used Triibike for AZ last year..used my gear bags for all my bike related stuff..only thing I wished I had was my own pump but there were pumps avail to use at the venue..Was able to get it out for a ride on the course pre-race which was good for me. Post race was awesome-just drop it off & forget it til you get home.

Are you allowed to take a bike pump on a plane ?

thats what I meant.  Didnt know if you were allowed to check it in with baggage.  Also for those who will be flying in to Arizona, how will you be bringing your nutrition....on plane or buying it there?

I put my pump in my gear bag for IMCdA and shipped with my bike. I packed as much as I could in my gear bag, but as for nutrition, I use Infinit, so I put that in with my gear bag as well.

Now that I've wrapped up Ironman 70.3 California as my early season A race I'm switching my focus to IMAZ.  I'll be on a 24 week plan, so that won't officially kick in until June or so.  Until then I'm going to freestyle it a bit and put in some training rides and runs with my girlfriend as she preps for Vineman 70.3.  Her training will be low heart rate for me so that should be some nice base.  I have to build some Ironman endurance and try to save as much of my 70.3 speed as I can.

Enjoying my last week of "do what I want" before I start my 30 week Be Iron Fit plan.  The plan starts out light (for me), so it will still be easy for a while.  Getting excited to get focused.

Hope everyone is well.

I'm also going to use the BIF (Be Iron Fit) plan.

The easy part is the hardest part for me.  I've been messing around at higher volumes than the plan.  Dialing back down and getting serious is very difficult. I am so bad.  For example, the plan calls for Sunday bike 1:00 z2.  I have a 60 mile ride with 2500 ft of climbing planned.  The plan calls for swims Tuesday and Thursday.  But I'm so much smoother in the water if I swim 4 mornings a week.

I may need counciling.

I'm right there with you! Official training starts end of May for me. Right now I'm just getting back into the habit. However, I can't stick with the plan, I keep going way over my planned workouts right now, I think I did over double the bike volume I was supposed to the last 2 weeks and that's with skipping my weekend rides!

Sounds like we have a bunch of over achievers doing the race this year!  It will be hard for me as well to stick to the plan in the beginning.  I will probably do more than the plan some days.  Others I will do what the plan calls for and consider it a recovery day.  Just make sure to listen to your body everyone so none of us get injured.

I'm hoping to be slightly higher in volume at first than my plan, mostly because my bike and run are quite weak compared to my swim, so I could use the extra volume.  Also, the way I've organized my training, I'm currently in a HIM plan that ends early June, then after a week off I start the AZ plan.  So I'm guessing my volumes in the first month will drop considerably from where they are at in the peak of the HIM plan, which is what I'm using leading up to Alcatraz.

I'm going to follow the Iron Fit plan starting Monday too. It does start off with less volume then I've been doing. It's nice to see that there are others that are going to go a bit over I'm going to do Vineman 70.3 in July and the plan would have me ready for a 1/2IM in September so I feel like I have to go over a bit in volume otherwise I won't be ready. It's kind of a tricky thing. This is going to be my first IM and I really want to be ready and have it be a good day but I don't want to over do it and get injured along the way.

My suggestion if anyone cares is stick to the plan, it will help you avoid injury. especially if this is your first. I used the 30 week competitive program for my first and beat my goal! Training for an ironman is long, and if you look at how many sign up and then look at how many actually start. Most that bail before the start of the race, are injured do to overtraining. I hope that helps.

That does help and it's sound advice. I just struggle with certain things. I ride with a group on Wednesday mornings. I would have to not ride with them for a couple of months and I'm already fit to do 45-50 with them. My husband and I like to get a long ride in on the weekends and that would be cut way back. I like the way the plan builds up slowly and seems doable and I know that part of adding extra workouts is part overeagerness, part panic and part I like some of these longer workouts

Question for the group - If you were in the last free week before beginning a 30 week IM program, the last 'free' unstructured week of the year, what would you do?  My honey du list is empty.

Well since this weekend is going to be perfect in Southern California, I'm playing some golf then spending the rest of my time grilling and hanging out at the pool. Make it last! ;-)

Thats why you sign up for IMCDA in June and IMAZ in November.  You get a good 20 week build to CDA then 4 weeks off and a 12-16 week build to Arizona.

I'm still doing workouts this week, but I also plan on getting organized for training - plan my meals for the week, see what I need to replenish or buy (more shot blocks, new shoes), etc.

The one thing I plan on doing and enjoying is sleeping late on Saturday (even if for me that means 7:30).  It may be the last time I get to sleep late until after the IM, so that's what I'll be doing Saturday.

Ok, after hearing you all talking about Fink, I think I'll do that one too. I just used a BT HIM plan for a race last Sunday (in Tempe, so good practice for IMAZ) and it worked well, but the full IM plans wouldn't start for 10 more weeks, and I want a plan now! It starts at a lower volume than I've gotten used to, so that will feel like a bit of a break. However, I'm like some of you in that I don't want to cut back that much. I worked hard to build this fitness, and I don't want to lose it! So I may sneak in longer rides than planned in this first phase. Plus, I have a marathon in 2 1/2 weeks, so I'll be tweaking the runs to accommodate that. I guess that answers how I'll spend my last 'free' week: reading Fink's book so I'll be ready!
