Hello everyone!  I'm glad to see how our group is shaping up with all of the new members and can tell already that the 2012 season is going to be a great one!

Mark, I love the picture and glad to see that you are having a fun time in Colombia, salud amigo!

On my side, I've been having somewhat of a hard time trying to balance my IM training (week 21 right now) with all of the holiday parties down here, but have not missed many workouts yet, so I'm not going to worry to much about it until January! Actually, in spite of all the partying, I probably will log a higher volume of workouts in December, than what we did with Ernesto's group during our November challenge!

Happy Holidays from Guatemala and hope that 2012 is full of blessings for everyone!

Gabriel

Happy Holidays to all!

Next week my 3 yr old is home from school, so I will be staying home while my wife works...Don't feel too bad for her, I will be staying home but she gave me the task of Potty training my 3 yr old, so I am sure I will wish to be working by the third "accident".

But since I will be home, I am thinking I can squeeze some extra workouts in the afternoon, especially biking (need to get used to my new bike). Any advice to prevent fatigue/injuries/etc?

Now that I have my road bike I am planning to do a balance 2x training. For next week, should I just add a third session for each S/B/R, or just focus on biking and swimming (I need more help on those than in the run).

Samy

Samy,

Keep the frequency high for run and bike, and even though the triathlon season is long in Florida you shouldn't focus so much in the swim unless you really have a lot of improvement to make.

The fact that running comes easier for you shouldn't be a reason to start neglecting it, I did that (because I came from a running background) and I paid with a plateau on my speed that has lingered on for three years now.

I've been looking at your log Gabe, certainly impressed with the volume you're putting in despite the Holidays.

The other thing that doesn't cease to amaze me is your constant progress, I believe you're right on track for a wonderful race in Ironman Texas. Plus you look focused and enthusiastic. If you want to relax next week, do it! This might be your last chance until mid May to cut back and enjoy. Knowing you though, I believe you'll be running on Christmas day with a hangover from the sangria...

Thank you Elizabeth for the suggestion for gloves,  Scott purchased me some Asics but they are for moderate weather.  I tried doubling them with my Nike liners but the limited space on the Asics lead  to the feeling of my circulation being cut off.  I went to Dicks and they sell what I think you are talking about.  Scott and I also found a pair online that has a rating of -15 I think.  We have to now compare the two.

Mark- Love the Picture!!!!!  My heart rate is higher here than L.A. So Ernesto recommended I find a steady rate and go with that.  I'm at a higher rate but it is steadily coming down..  1 beat at a time!

Scott is running at the gym right now, this is where we struggle...  With Guests tomorrow and 2 days of meals to prep and prepare for...  Kids home, It gets tough.  Scott didn't swim this morning because he was helping me so I wanted him to run tonight.  Besides..  I love him and the kids, not so sure the kitchen is the best place for him....  (and he will read this so I'm not hiding anything).  Tomorrow we will get in a bike on the Spinervals before reality strikes.  Not so sure about Sunday, as I cook enough for an Army!

For Everyone---  Thank You!!  You all and all your advice have been a gift.  For those of you on the last forum, you saw my struggles and issues/injury and you motivated and inspired me to push through it.  For all of you new to this group...You picked the BEST!!!!  I am excited to be entering a new year with  you all.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!!!

Thanks for the good wishes Jennie, you are doing a great job with your training in your situation with the weather, the Holidays and the kiddos. I hope that you and Scott along with the children have a wonderful time this Christmas.

Well the holiday season has hit us down under as well. wGoing to be tough trying to log in all my exercises. Hope to do heaps of swimming as the weather will be PERFECT. A beautiful 30-40 degrees C every day. The sea breeze is a killer. I get back from Holidays and have my 1st sprint tri so i can't take it too easy. One good thing is i will have heaps of time and staying no more then 100m from the beach the swimming session should be easy to do. Any way stay safe and best wishes. Till next year Cool

On my way to put a semi long ride with my teammates in (Texas) cold temperatures (31F). Not windy so it will be fun. God, I was looking at my log for December and I realized that with the Holidays, work and travel this has been the sketchiest month in three years.

Things will change in January though, work is getting easier and not a whole lot of travel coming up.

Samy,

The fact that running comes easier for you shouldn't be a reason to start neglecting it,

I did not say it was easier, its just the lesser of three evils Frown.

Thanks for the input, I will probably add a couple of easy bike/run sessions next week and see how that goes. Ongoing, I will see if I can find the time to add a 3rd run/bike during the week.

Looks like everyone is going strong despite the holiday madness.  I'm very encourage by the chatter on here as well.  I have some of the same swim struggles, been trying to implement all the recommendations in the pool.  Keep them coming

Running question:  I'm on 4 runs without pain in my knee.  Today I did short session of intervals without the knee braces.  Is it recommended to run everyday?  How often should I include intervals?  How high should my heart rate go for interval training?

Merry Christmas to all!

Thank you. I will try to hook up with the tri group out of the nearby town or set something else up, so I don't do it alone. I do have a route scoped out in a nearby national forest that I thnk is safe. Low traffic wide roads. I would prefer not to be alone on this route, because there are also no amenities, shetchy cell service and few houses in case I get into trouble.

I love Guatemala at Christmas. There is such a great feeling of the Christmas spirit there. I just wish someone would have warned me about the fireworks at midnight on Christmas eve.

I have a question for my friend who go inside during the winter and ride thier bike on a trainer. What do you do to break up the workout and keep your mind active?

Gabriel, gracias. The real fun will start today, los of family members in this little house... It's a tradition. If it were up to me I would go to the park with everybody, I like space. Tonight not much sleep predicted, the fireworks will be huge, although illegal here, but these folks don't have much respect for the rules.

This morning did 15k run at a very relaxed pace with the gloves on. It was cold and raining a bit (of course not as cold as 'up there' where you guys are, but cold).

Things will change in January though, work is getting easier and not a whole lot of travel coming up.

I'm the opposite... I just accepted new responsibilities at work that will start Jan. 2.  Hoping that having a new bike trainer in the basement will make it more convenient for me to get some sessions in, even if it"s been a long work day.

Merry Christmas everyone!

10 mile run with run club this morning. Just a touch of snow last night covering limestone rails-to-trails trail. Wooded and gorgeous. Goes past golf courses, lakes and very expensive houses (which are a lot nicer to look at than not so expensive houses). 19 degrees at 8 AM. Everyone had such a good time that at the coffee shop we go to afterward, we scheduled a special meet up at the same trail for Monday morning. I think we are purchasing indulgences for eating by running. I'm planning on 15 miles Monday.

Merry Christmas Ernesto, Gabe, Mitch, Jackie, Jen, Scott, Mark, Barry, and all our new members!

Joyce, doing intervals only four runs after injury is not adviseable, I would focus on some base and then do it. Why rush it?

Thanks Ernesto for getting back so quick!

I'm just being impatient (the reason for the injury in the first place!).  When I see others working out at a hard effort,  it makes me feel like I'm falling "behind".  It's the bigger picture I need to focus on.

Set up my TrainerRoad and performed the Eight Minute Test program - hour long ride with two eight minute tests to calculate LTHR and FTP.  Liked the program a lot - set up was easy and looks to be a worthwhile investment (especially at $8/mos (special rate for beta testers); or $10 mos for the rest).
