carrie639 - 2011-12-21 3:53 PM I have never peed on the bike either. So a few questions: for women, do you stand or sit to pee? How do you keep from soaking you shoes and socks? Do you rinse with some water after? Do you cleanse the bike after? The seats?Do you pee on the run?How do you keep from having any #2 issues in longer distances?

To pee on the bike (for a girl):

1.  You get going at pretty good clip.  Look, make sure no one is behind you, then coast.

2.  As you are coasting just let it go and start peeing.

3.  Once you are done, use a water bottle to rinse off your legs.

I don't wear socks on the bike for just this reason.

With regard to the second part.  If you have your race nutrition dialed in, your a lot less likely to have GI issues.  Part of having it dialed in has to do with pacing (if you go too hard on the bike you're going to shut down your GI system and not be able to digest the calories you're taking in, leading to issues) and the other part has to do with what you use.  Some people have iron guts and can take in anything.  Others, like me, need a specific race nutrition plan.

LMAO at "you obviously should not poop yourself."  Knowing my luck, I'd be THAT girl

This guy is known as the mad shatter from IMFL in 2010.  He did, however, qualify for Kona:

Fundraising - I did Big Sur marathon with Team in Training years ago.  Some of the things I did to fundraise -

I convinced my work to have a jeans day.  Anyone who contributed $3 could wear jeans on a designated day.  I think I raised close to $700 that way.  I work in a big office, and everyone wants to wear jeans.

My friend and I put letters on all the mailboxes in our neighborhood, telling a story about how we started running, but more importantly about our commitment to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma socitey.  We had a patent hero, we included his photo and story.  I was amazed at how giving people were, we raised probably close to $1500 doing that, one person gave $750.

We did bake sales at work.

Some people had bars or restaurants sponsor a night and would give a percentage of the total sales for the night.

Hope that helps.

carrie639 - 2011-12-21 12:07 PM This is huge. I have refused to do HR training for a long time and always ran way too high ... Kelly has forced in into my schedule the last month and I feel much better and feel like I can run longer without as much wear and tear!

I too followed Kelly's advice for running and started training by HR this year.  It helped me tremendously.  I don't know what I've gotten any faster, maybe a little, but mostly it's improved my endurance (which has always been lacking) by allowing me to go longer and not feel completely wiped out.

I'm just learning about HR training, but I definitely want to try it out.  Any suggestions?

Also, I feel completely out of my league with all of you.  Yikes!

Heal quickly Kelly!  That sucks!

Heart rate.  I, personally, think HR training is a great way to go.  It is not the only way (and there are times when I do not use HR in training) but its a really good metric.  The reason I like using HR is that HR measures the total amount of stress on your body in a way that pace can't (power is a whole different story).  On a flat my aerobic "pace" is about an 8:20 min/mile, on serious hills its closer to 9.  By using HR, I don't push too hard or go too easy just to maintain a specific pace.  HR essentially keeps me in check and makes me make my easy workouts easy and my hard workouts hard.

HR also take into account everything else going on in your life.  Your HR rises in response to stress.  In training, it usually rises in response to biking or running but if you have other stresses in your life, it also takes those into account.

swima - 2011-12-21 4:55 PM Oh and one last question..anyone do a race for charity before and have any fundraising suggestions? Im doing IMLP with the ironman foundation slots

I raise money for the Blazeman Foundation by race directing a 1/4 Marathon every year.  Annually we're able to make a donation of about $5000 from this one race.  Here's the website if you're interested:

My first triathlon I did for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on my own. I used the First Giving web site and raised $1500.

If you are doing a race that has a charity attached, it's easier. Mine did not but I've had a lot of friends stricken with various cancers (mostly Leukemia and Lymphoma) so I wanted to do something to "honor" them.

Thanks for the ideas! All of those sound great. I feel like the hardest part is that the "ironman foundation" isn't like a specific charity i guess, so its hard to tell people what the money goes to. I'm still working on figuring that out.

never tried running by heart rate before, you guys are making me want to try it now

No one is out of their league.  That's the beauty of trialthon.  Pros and BOPers race on the same course, on the same day and have to do the exact same thing.  Imagine driving your car around a NASCAR track while a race was going on.  The populism of the sport is pretty cool.

i always pee in my wetsuit, always.  I have never had a race where i didn't pee in it. I would be worried if i did not pee in my wetsuit, lol

Remember the 10 page discussion we had about the legality of my peeing between the bike racks in the middle of the Chicago Triathlon.  I'll save it for the bike next time.  LOL

Jen, there was a pooping on the bike thread about 2 years ago. I am still agast. Seriousy if you have go #2 get off the freaking bike. Riding with a load in your pants and them running is neither avisable nor areo. It's also freaking nasty

Sorry about the ankle Kelly. Make sure you get some treatment. Is really a high ankle sprain? That is a pretty serious injury, Ben Rothleberger tried to play on one Monday night... I fought a high sprain my jr year in college, it was brutal.

I can't even pee in open water in my wetsuit ... this would really take some work, if it were to happen.

karen26.2 - 2011-12-21 10:22 AM The other day I did the 20 minute test (which is really an hour long workout) on trainerroad.  I paired up my HR strap & the speed cadence sensor, but forgot to tell the program what type of trainer I was using.  So, while the test was successful in calculating my LTHR for that 20 minute all out test portion, I was really wanting a virtual power number at the end.  I'm going to attempt this again today, and hope I can figure it out, because that workout kicked my butt!  I don't want to have to do it again!

Can you explain trainerroad to me? I saw it discussed a bit on the main forum.

So out running this morning I stepped on a rock, completely wiped out and have a high ankle sprain in my left ankle.  I had this ankle surgically reconstructed in 2006 so this is not a particularly good development.

No running for a bit.  Looks like I'll be water running (so much fun).

Oh no Kelly! I hope you have a speedy recovery!!

First let me say I'm not good at technical stuff, and will probably botch this up pretty good.

But...it's a really cool software program that allows you to do trainer workouts, by either HR or virtual power.  These two guys apparently have programmed various trainers (Cyclops, Kurt Kinetic, etc.) into their workouts, and based on your trainer it will calculate your FTP.  You can also follow their workouts based on HR, or even works if you have a power meter.

They have Sufferfest workouts now, which if you have never done a Sufferfest I highly recommend.

You do have to have an ANT+ stick plus a speed/cadence sensor.

I'm excited about it.  If you go to their website there's a short overview you can watch.

Their customer service is top notch.  I forgot to set my trainer for the test I did to determine my FTP.  I emailed them and they looked up my workout and calculated it for the 20 min. effort based on my trainer.  I'm sooooo glad I didn't have to do that test again so soon.

I did have to slow down, especially on hills.  It didn't take long at all to know when I was starting to go over Z2 without looking at my watch.  As time went on my pace picked back up and I was right back where I was before starting.  But, it felt much easier, and I felt like I could keep going at that pace.  Whereas before, I would finish exhausted and useless the rest of the day.

I highly recommend trying it out.  It may not be for everyone, but it's worth trying.

Morning all. Trying to clear the decks of big stuff at work today and tomorrow so next week can be relaxing.... I need to log some time logging wow for the past month to get my logs up to date. Maybe I'll sit on a log while I log. Like a run today. Hoping for a garmim 910 for Hanukkah this year. I also need new aero bars. Maybe race wheels too, we'll see.

Generally you have to slow down in the beginning, but then your paces begin to drop as you consistently train by HR.  When I started training by HR in July of 2010 my aerobic pace was generally 9:30 - 10 min / mile, its now about an 8:20.  Its kind of like Matthew McConaghey in Dazed and Confused -- paces get faster but HR stays the same.

Taking a quick look at your training and your bike test, my guess is that you're going to think your zones look "too low."  Personally, I have a hard time setting zones based on an indoor bike TT.   I would go with the zones you get from this test and then re-test with a 5K to confirm.
