Funny you should say that about swimming best at the end of a workout - that has been happening to me lately. I thought it might be because the drills are actually working...but being more relaxed in the water makes a lot of sense.

James - life is CONSTANTLY getting in the way of my workouts. I think for the last month, I haven't had a single week when I hit every single workout at scheduled. How I'm dealing with it is continuing on instead of trying to fit the missed workout in. How do you handle it?

Hope all are well - another Saturday morning going to be spent sitting on a concrete bleacher inhaling chlorine (another swim meet for my kids)...only two more meets before the end of the season. Thank goodness.

luckily for me, I am in a recovery week, so I am not too upset about missing the workout, but on a normal week i would feel different. I would try to work in someof it if possible. For example, yesterday I was suppose to do a swim/bike brick and today is a straight up run, so what I did was this. I swam this morning and I will then get back on track with my run this afternoon/evening. Tomorrow I have a bike planned, so I might add on a few more missed miles there and try to make it up.

I know there will be other workouts that will be cut short or skipped for many reasons, but if I can make it up without it screwing up my other days, I will.

Hey all, have a great weekend, too! I'm heading down to Texas with the military for a week and won't get much of a chance for any swimming or biking, but I'm sure they'll find time to run. Recent events: left my swimsuit at the pool and it was 'taken", although why anyone would want it is beyond me - but my new one will be waiting when I return. I finally broke down, opened the wallet and bought a trainer, Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll. Used it for the 1st time with Spinnervals #27. Sweated a bit! Anyone use this DVD before and/or can recommend any others to me? All in all, life is good! Even our frozen NY has thawed again for a bit, 50 degrees the other day.

Hey everyone, I'm back... at least kind of.  Been away from my computer (what a nice break) for the last week enjoying my Chinese New Year...  I got a couple of bike rides in, and a run at lunch today.  Hoping to pick up the training beginning this week.  I have plans to be running, biking, and hopefully start swimming again in February.  We'll see how everything pans out.

I've missed the last few pages of chit chat, and probably won't have the time to back read for at least another few days.  Busy busy busy with the beginning of the semester and everything.  Good luck, and enjoy your workouts everyone.

Hello all! I hope you all had a great weekend!  Did anyone come up with any ideas for a monthly challenge or is that kind of lame?

I have 2 races in Feb. An 8k and a 10K trail run. I am looking forward to these races!!!

Wow! already with the races? My first one is at the beginning of April. They have offered a local half marathon for the middle of March - but the roads are still very icy and it could seriously snow then, so I'm opting out of that one.

Monthly challenge...no - no ideas. Why? Because any idea I have would require a significant amount of work on my part (like - how close can you get to finishing all of your planned workouts? would mean I would have to enter my planned workouts into BT, which I am too lazy at this point to do). We could do a winter weather challenge? Oh - wait, Duncan would lose because it's ALWAYS warm where he's at. Hmmm. Let me cogitate on it during tonight's FTP test (blergh).

Another thought, is to list your s/b/r goals for the month.  I'm probably zero on all three, but will continue to work on strength and flexability.

RIDE YOUR BIKE!

Ok, my goals for Feb are simply. Be consistent with my workouts. I want to hit everyone. I am sure that I will miss some, but I want to be as close to 100% as I can get. I am starting my 20 weeks IM plan on Monday, and really want to put the work in and have a decent time. My goal is 12 hrs. For me that means any time that starts with a 12. I do want to be faster than 12:30. So I will need to follow the plan very tightly to do that.

May that is what we should do for the Feb challenge. Just see who can be the most consistent. Of course the means we also need to log our workouts. I for one and pretty bad at it. I have been good the last month though.

ARGH!   I just found out that we had an extra day off during Chinese New Year and so I have to work all day on Saturday to make it up!!!  SUCKS!

This is a fun fact about Taiwan that you can share with your kids... when there is a holiday on a tuesday or thursday we often get the monday or friday with it to make it a nice long weekend... HOWEVER, 1 ~ 2 weeks later, you have to make up the missed day with a full day of school or work on Saturday!!!

Example, on 2/28 there is a national holiday in Taiwan (It's because there was an uprising against the ruling government on this day many years ago, and many people were killed.) Since this year it is on Tuesday, we also get 2/27 (monday) off... HOWEVER< that same week, on March 3rd, the Saturday, we all have to come to school and study or work our full Monday schedule!!!

I like the idea of postin monthly goals, so if you want to participate, then please let us know what your goals are (and be sure and log all your workouts so we can help keep you on point)

My goals are all coming off my BT plan I am using for an Olympic Tri in May

SWIM: 18,950 yards (10.7 miles)

BIKE: 229 miles

Run: 78 miles

Sorry it took so long.  Here are the cvs files for an HIM plan and IM plan.  I will probably be using this IM plan for IMAZ this fall.  It's just enough to get me across the finish line healthy and strong, but leaves enough time for other things.

My goals for February: 1. swim at least twice a week, 2. run at least 140 miles and 3. Bike at least 300 miles.

Fortunately for me, my whole family is understanding about my desires to train and race. As I was getting supper ready - my youngest (she's 9) gave me my "plan" for next week:

My February Goals...

I'm gonna run at least 5 times a week.  Even if its just 1km with my daughter or something.

I'm gonna swim at least once this month!  Haha... I haven't swam since October!

I'm gonna ride my bike.   Still thinking about that trainer... 42" TV being delivered tonight, so I've got the entertainment side covered!

Hey group.  Thought I would share the news (maybe not what you want to hear from a mentor).  But I got in my first run in maybe almost 2 months?  Maybe a bit longer?  I was very pleased how it went and it had me thinking about a couple things to share.

I have OFFICIALLY joined the camp that weight training can help triathlon.  I felt more powerful during my run today, like I was a runner from head to toe.  Especially in the core and legs, and some in the shoulders.  All due to strength training.  Cardio is important (and I had a good base), bit so is a power to weight ratio.  My whole body is stronger, making running easier.

If I were to stress anything, I would strongly suggest adding 3 sessions a week, about 15 minutes per session of core work.  Find a really tough core workout that includes upper, lower, oblique, etc.  I always heard that a strong core helps with swimming position, position on your bike, and running posture.  Now that I have done a month of core training, I can feel it helping.  It sort of links the entire body together.

I think I will always try to include a couple sessions of weight training a week as well, even if I have to give up a short run or swim to get it in.

I agree. I have started doing more core and feel that it is helping. I have also started to do strength training. Today I did 4469 yards in the pool. I could feel the same pull that I have been working on in the weight room, in the pool. It was very cool. I felt much stronger and moved through the water better.

Of note that is the farthest I have ever swam at one time. I couldn't figure out how I was taking longer to do the workout than the plan gave me, until a nice lady swimming in the lane next to me pointed out that my plan was in yards and I was swimming in a 25 meter pool. I did 4100m which turns out to be 4469 yards.

Sounds fabulous. At our house, we call them "Blanche" days - after Blanche Dubois...it should be a day filled with doing only what the participant wants to do in the timeframe that the participant wants. Enjoy!
