New user 6 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Hi Folks hope you are all well, we have up 10cm of snow forecast some time over this weekend, all I need for training! The local newspaper here ran a small article on the children's triathlon coaching session that myself and a couple of friends hold, we are starting again tomorrow after the Christmas break (weather permitting), I really enjoy doing it, here's the link to the article. Enjpy your weekend and training, hopefully I'll get some down before the snow arrives! Neil x

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED What you are doing with the kids is awesome Neil. I think I have a few in the brood that are excited about getting into it (my 10 year old already runs a sub 25 minute 5k). Week End Plans: Coach 4th grade basketbqll tonight. Tomorrow run for 90 minutes at 135 bpm. I have never used a heart rate monitor before. I just got a new Garmin 410 for Christmas and it has been very cool. Loading info on to the BT site from Garmin was a big plus. Sunday watch the Patriots beat up the Texans (sorry Texas fans). I also have to get outside for a 60 minute run on Sunday which will be awesome because it is supposed to hit 56 degrees up here, who would of thunk! I would love to get the bike out but a lot of people have told me not to take it out once they have salted the roads (which they already have). Have a great weekend everyone! James |

Member 34 Tampa | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Great workout today!! After 12hours running around the ER, managed to get thru a body pump class then dragged my lifeless body to the pool for a swim. My stroke and breathing are really starting to come together. Just need to work on taking a breath on both sides. Weekend Plans: Sat: Lunch and drinks at the pub with friends from out of town, then watching football all day while cleaning the house. Sun: Early run, some work in the yard before football comes on at 1pm Mon(3 day weekend for me): Early morning workout and swim, then i'll either play golf or take the dog to the beach, or both? Still haven't purchased my bike yet, so i'll prob hit up some shops around town and check out stuff online while i'm sitting on my watching football. Not sure if i wanna splurge on something new, or get something slightly used and just upgrade it piece by piece. I haven't owned a bike in a decade. All my riding has been in the gym or spin class. Hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend

When your body tells you to stop you stop.Saturday 1 1/2 hr run followed by 1/2 hr swim. Rest Sunday. |

Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Okay so I got my 10 miles done. Not the best run I've ever had - then again not the worst either. I am feeling very lucky to be able to still train outside hearing about all the cold weather in other places. I even got a very quick swim in to try out my new long sleeve wetsuit. Worked like a dream! |

But since my knee hurts, I wasn't able to take advantage of it. Super bummed about that. I haven't been outside on my bike in months and might not get another good chance until March or so. |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED KRISTY: Great job on being smart and not tempted to push that knee with that beautiful January 60 degree Ohio weather. EVERYONE: I was totally psyched yesterday because I finally did a run I always wanted to do, kind of a mini goal. It was a 10 mile run from my house to the end of a main road at Wampatuck State Park which is near my house and has some decent hills. I actually was able to fit the run in after attending a series of Saturday kid's basketbal games. Went out about 4:00 and was able to get through the state park section just as it got really dark. I know they say coyotes are more afraid of us but it is still a little spooky in the forest at night by yourself when they start howling, I do have to say I picked my pace up a little bit at that point. Ran for close to 2 hours keeping my heart rate at 135 as planned and I felt really strong. Although a little slower this was the first time I went over 10 miles and wasn't dying as I reached my house. It was a balmy 43 degrees and I ran in shorts and longsleeve top which is great up here in Boston this time of year and it is actually supposed to go into the 50's today, yahoo! ??REMINDER: Weigh-ins are due by 8:00 EST tonight. I am in at 176.5 down 1.5. Have a great Sunday everyone!

I am in at 176.5 down 1.5. You're brave! Glad you had such an amazing run. Good going on the 1.5 lbs. too. I'm at the same weight, 160. Excuses: It's been a bad week for deadlines and flu-like symptoms. I had my flu shot and that was the result. But after hearing the news reports about how bad it was this year, I decided I better get one. My first race is 10 weeks away. I haven't done well so far, but I'll buckling down and training this week. I want Mamma and my siblings to be proud of me. |

Member 54 Kenosha | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED "I have some 2-in-1 shorts I have been running and and really like. However, when they wet, they weigh around 10 pounds. I need some ideas for wet weather running gear." Probably any TRI specific shorts would be great. They are like bike shorts with a more minimalistic chamois. Most of my gear is Pearl Izumi (PI). Since I just started with TRI last season I only have two pair of actual TRI shorts and a TRI suit. 1st pair were PI - "Select" series. They were absolutely awesome and I thought I'd never need a different model or design. After a few weeks of training and never ending washing I decided to get some more of the same. Went to the PI store and all they had were "Elite" series. I bought them. 2nd pair were PI - "Elite" series. They fit and functioned even better than the Selects did. Both pair are excellent for swimming, then straight to the bike, or swim straight to the run if that is what your training day entails. They retain next to zero water when you get out of the lake. I do not recommend you do pool swims in your TRI shorts unless you are wealthy and can afford to replace them regularly because the pool Chlorine ruins them quickly. I have other gear I could review for you as well but short answer to 10lb shorts is to ditch them and get the TRI specific shorts. Enjoy Edited by John_S 2013-01-13 5:29 PM |

New user 41 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Current weight: 201.6. But I don't believe it. I accidentally reported a wrong number last week and was at 204 (rather than 202). With my knee injury, I didn't hardly exercise last week. So I don't see how I could have lost 2.4 pounds. I really think this morning's weigh in was an anomaly. At least that's what I'm telling myself so I don't use it as an excuse to eat a whole pizza. |

Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Happy Monday! Looks like everyone is off to a good start for the week. After a full weekend of workouts I did not make it to 6 am swim practice this morning - luckily for me there is a mid-day session too so I can still go stretch out my muscles from yesterday's bike ride. Even though it's hard I find that it's a good idea for me to have my whole week of workouts in my head at the beginning of the week. That way I can plan ahead for meals and whatnot and hopefully not get thrown off by a hectic activity schedule during the week. I also find that it's helpful to commit to your family members when you'll be working out that way they can help you stick to your schedule. My workout schedule is actually posted on our fridge along with the kids activity schedule. So this morning when I was sipping coffee instead of at the pool my husband said, no swimming today - eh. It's actually helpful to have him hold me accountable in that way. Now I gotta go eat something so that I'm ready for the noon workout |

New user 41 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED I got good news at the doctor today. The knee pain that's been bothering me for the last week is just bursitis. He said running on the ice is really tough on the hamstrings so that probably is what started the problem. The good news is that you can run through bursitis without doing any additional damage. So as long as I'm not actively limping, I'm good to get back to training. I had bursitis in my hip before and I got over it in a few weeks. Doctor's sending me to physical therapy on Friday to get an assessment and get some exercises I can do at home. Ice. Rest. Advil. But overall, no big deal. I'm in less pain today, so the plan for tomorrow is to go to the Y, run a short 15 minutes on the treadmill to test it out, upper body weight lifting, then a short swim. If I feel fine after that, Wednesday I'll get on the trainer for 30-45 minutes and I should be back on track. |
