Can I ask what you are doing for your nutrition plan during the race?

I am going to eat some balance bars, fig newtons and drink gatorade. I've been practicing my nutrition for the past couple of months and those seem to work best with my digestion. I will have 2 balance bars, 6 newtons and 4 bottles of gatorade on the bike. I will have a balance bar when I start the run and 6 more newtons in the middle(a couple every mile for a couple miles 4-6). I will drink gatorade every chance I get on the run. I figure I will burn around 4-5k calories and my plan is to take in around 2000. I do pretty well when I have had 4 hour training sessions. I burn about 2-3k calories and take in around 1500. Of course this is as close as I can get with estimating, but I seem pretty close. We shall see how well I do.

I've thought about high cliff, but I think I am going to do the Olympic distance in Verona the week before. I hear that they do part of the Ironman loop in the Oly there and I really would like to do that under race conditions. But if I still feel good....who knows?

Hi folks.  Sorry I've been AWOL.  Just got back from 2 weeks of work-related travel.  I'm wiped.  Did my first bike ride of the spring with our team today.  Felt weird being so warm outside.

Hydration.
Don't start too fast.
Have a plan.

Nothing too groundbreaking, but important things to remember I think.

Great job for a "training run".  Congrats on sticking with it even though you weren't rested for it.  It will pay off later in the season.

Whoa, from sprint to HIM!  I can empathize with your swim experience (except for the saltwater) and swallowing water.  You hung in there and persevered to the finish.  At least now you know what to expect at Steelhead.  The HIM distance is tough because you can't really relax, but you can't push it like an Oly either.

Great job!!

Thanks.

Of course I think it should be required reading. That way you won't make the same mistakes I did. I was really irritated by the whole swim cap and goggles thing. I cannot believe that I made that mistake.

Of course it was a fantastic expierience. Everyone was great. From the other participants to the volunteers, everyone was great. I had a funny experience in the finishers tent. 2 guys were sitting around complaining that they had to wait 'forever' for the awards ceremony and wouldn't get out of there for a long time. I had just finished 10 min ago so I was savoring my seat and some pizza. I leaned over and said, 'you know, if you finish slow like me, you can just leave when you are done.' They looked at each other and we all started laughing. We then talked about the course a little and our different experiences. After a min, I got up and said, well, it's time for me to go now....maybe next time you will have a better strategy and we all laughed again and I took off.

As a side note, when I did my sprint tri last summer and they had pizza at the end, I thought it was gross and a very bad idea. I thought, who the heck wants pizza after doing a tri? Of course when I got to the food tent at the end of the HIM, I thought....MMMM, Pizza!

Funny how my perspective changed.

In the changing room after IM WI last fall a guy had a friend bring in a whole pizza.  A couple of us sitting near him begged for a piece of pizza from this total stranger.  Luckily he felt sorry for us and gave us a piece....man, did that taste good!!
