The bicycle hunt is still on-- I tried out a couple bikes and have definitely determined that cannondales are not going to work for me, and I am now focused on either a trek or a specialized and planning to go bike shopping again next weekend. My best friend's coming into town and she's a bike fanatic so I'm sure she'll motivate me to just buy one already :-)

I forgot, are you looking for a tri-bike or a road-bike (or a bmx bike, who knows, really?).

natebs - 2008-01-14 12:30 AM Weekend was crap for me, was interested at all in training, first weekend in a long long time that I took off both days. Maybe I needed it, we`ll see this week. All the swimming I`ve been doing I think has wore down my upper body, it has been sore for a few weeks now, hopefuly the rest will do me good. I`m thinking of staying out of the pool till Tue. or Wed.. I`II hit the tredmill today, I`m on nightshift this week thats why I`m writing this at 12:30 am, nights still young. Nathan

Nathan,

I had to take the weekend off too. My body was rebelling after ramping up hours training, and I started feeling a bit under the weather. For me, staying healthy early in the training season is becoming more important than hitting all the marks in the training program. Will try to get out on the roads in the snow for a run this morning.

I KNEW IT WAS BIGGER THAN A CENTURY RIDE!

 CONGRATS!

(Did you get down on one knee or did you do it mid-stride?

I was going to get down on a knee, but she realized what was going on, started crying, and kissed me.

I kinda blew the good week of eating I had going, but it was sort of a special occasion.

congrats!! a very good reason to forget about good eating!

as for the bike-- i am looking for a tri bike, i think. i just want one that's comfortable enough-- i had a road bike for a while that i hated and it took me a long time to try roadbiking again after the pain my first one left me in (and it was fitted and the right size supposedly, but maybe the guy was new?). and i borrowed a tri bike last year and found it far more comfortable so i think i might stick to tri bikes?

any advice anyone has is always appreciated, cuz i don't know enough about either to have a firm opinion i guess.

Comfort is a big thing.  I only have a roadie, but I flip the seat post around and shove the seat up all the time for more of a tri position.  Even when I don't have the aeros on it.

I love laying on the aeros for a solo ride, but I also like roading it in a pace line on 50+ mile rides.  If you get in a pace line and lay on aeros, somebody will probably save the group and just go ahead and kick you off your bike.  Thus, I went with the roadie.

If you're more comfortable on a tri bike, and that's the type of cycling you like doing, then go with a tri bike.  If you want to do group rides, don't be surprised if they drop you like a rock when you show up on your tri bike, though.  Cyclist are a-holes by nature anyway.  There are groups around where I live that I just won't ride with anymore.   Too much ego, always racing, and just general bike snobbery.

There's also nothing wrong with getting drop bars on a tri frame.  I'm basically doing the poor man's version of that with my set up.

You need to go watch a bunch of Dolph Lundgren or Charles Bronson movies immediately.

Look for me on ESPN2 tonight.  I'll be the guy in a seat in the upperdeck that the camera won't ever show.  Heading up for the MS State and Kentucky game.  Got a ride up and back, too, so I'll have a few beers, maybe a hot dog or two, back in bed by midnight.  Good times.

So, I've got a five mile run floating out there if anybody wants to go ahead and do it for me.

Heh... I would have said the same thing if it wasn't my engagment.

How's every body doing with their training starting off the year?  I've been pretty busy lately and haven't had a chance to stalk everybody's blog.  Warning, though.  Banks don't work on Monday, and I'm gonna find some time to snoop.

I just discovered a great way to get motivated is to join in on the BT challenges.  I threw myself into the T.I.T.S. (Time In The Saddle) team, and it has really helped me boost my bike time/miles.  I'm nearing 250 miles in January already.  I'm not sure what next month's challenge will be, but I'm sure you'll find a way to the kick in the rear you need to work on a discipline.

It's also fun posting in the team thread.  Especially for Team T.I.T.S.  The possibilities are endless.

Heh... I've still got his lifeless body in the garage.  The trashman wouldn't put him in the truck.  I think I'll have to go out by night and dump him in a lake, Sopranos style.

what's on tap for the weekend folks?

spinning class first thing tomorrow then a long run on sunday and monday off so probably something then too (will i start swimming again soon? that is the question :-) )

BUT I bought a bike tonight!! nothing to inspire the bike porn addicts but a good entry level bike--the specialized allez- and a slightly used one, which i wanted, and a good deal. so no more bike excuses (and probably fewer spinning classes too).

hope everyone has a good long weekend!

Kerry-Those are cool looking bikes!!

Hey everyone, here's a pretty unique approach to coaching for triathlon. They also have a lot of videos, podcasts up for free viewing. Some swim drills explained, etc.

endurancenation.us

Have a good weekend. I am doing nothing cuz I pulled a butt muscle which is remarkable because I was pretty much born without a butt. Maybe it's phantom pain like when people still feel their amputated arm, etc. Who knows.

sore knee
I few months ago a had a small bump on my left knee cap, it was only sore when i forgot and bent down on that knee, it never bothered me on any of my training. I went to the doctor and he said just to put ice on it and it will go away...it didn`t. A month ago I went back to him and he gave me some topical anti-inflamator to rob on it ( didn`t work ). I also went for xray and ultrasound for it. The ultrasound showed nothing and I`m going back this week to find out about the xray. But... last night and this morning on my run it hurt quite abit and this morning I had to stop my run. If the xray shows nother i think the next step is a MRI. The swelling around my knee was alot more this morning and so I iced it. Has anyone else had a lump on their knee cap?

I've never had this problem. Where is it on your kneecap? Is it hard or soft (i.e. like a spur or a cyst). I am sure that it's nothing but keep us posted as to what your doctor says. I know it sucks getting injured when you have a schedule and you're following a plan, etc. but it will pass a few days of not running will not hurt you. Keep on truckin'.

its on the lower part,( if you kneel down and the first part that touches the ground is the spot). Is not a cyst according to the specialist using the ultrasound, she said everything looked great from what she could, so I`II let you know when I see the Doc this week.

Nate,
Sorry to hear about the knee. I bet it will go away with some rest and time. Keep us posted.

Kerry,
Congrats on the bike! It looks sweet. Let me know when you are ready to do some hill climbing I just went to this road, GMR (Glendora Mountain Road), for the second time yesterday. It is about 1/2 way between me and Pasadina.

My weekend plans:
yesterday I did a hill ride, today I did a bike fit and am painting my hallway, tomorrow a run and a hike.

I got aero bars today! The guy doing my bike fit is a long time triathlete and he recommended them for anything Olympic dist or over. I honestly never considered them before because I thought it would be better to wait until I became independently wealthy and then buy a tri bike. He would have lowered my regular handle bars down if I didn't do the aeros so that my hip angles (my non-technical term) would be correct. But I decided why, not!

Do any of you have aero bars on a road frame? What are your thoughts?

I am looking forward to getting used to them. They are just the clip on kind so there are no fancy shifters or anything on the ends. Now I think I need a water bottle up front.
