Andrea,
Sorry to hear that you're not supposed to run, bike, swim.

I hope it's just a temporary thing. How long until you can run again? If your pt says never, you might want to get a new pt. I had a doctor tell me to never run again because of my knees, and another doctor (2nd opinion) give me a gradual running program and wished me success.

Joann

Nah, they don't say I can never run again. They just don't understand why it's really important to me. I will get this worked out, the problem is that I've never had a long break in my training, so I have to take one now to get it fixed.
I'll be back to tri's and marathons, but for now I'll just keep bugging my PT about what things I can do.

Andrea, I'm sorry to hear about your new instructions.  What does the PT say the problem is

Newest theory is bursitis. Before they thought it was just that my SI joint was restricted. In addition to that, my left side is disgustingly weaker than my right. I didn't even know but now it's obvious.
So they've got me doing a lot of ham/glute strength exercises and then ultrasound, stim, ice and deep tissue massage. With the massage, I know it's going to help, but damn it hurts.

They've also suggested that I work out like I'm 85. Meaning, easy, low resistance, about 30 minutes at a time. I promised them a full month without any running of any kind, but I'll be bargaining for swimming and biking in another 2 weeks.

All of that is fine, except that I'm worried I'll lose my cardiovascular fitness. I started running 4 years ago, but I remember how hard it was and I don't want to go through it again.

Andrea, thats not fun.  It soudns like they have a plan to get you healthy again.

Last night, I was reading Jack Daniels' book on injury recovery.  One of the points he made is that its MUCH easier to regain fitness than earn it the first time.  Yes, you will lose fitness in the short term by taking a break.  But in the long term, you'll be much better off.  Daniels actually lays out a plan for getting back into form based upon how long you've been out, whether you've done other fitness stuff while away from running, whether you've gained weight.

Please remember that you are young.  You have a lifetime of fitness ahead of you.  What is a couple of months compared to a lifetime of fitness?  Take a long view.  You can afford to.

BTW, here's a link to a good discussion about heart rate training.  Its posted by the coach that I've worked with some in the past, Mary Eggers.  Some good stuff.

Welcom back everyone and welcome, Cole. JoAnne, you are the hostess with the mostess!! Sorry about the granny workouts, Andrea, but you will get it back faster than you think if you allow yourself to heal!!

Since we have 15 feet of snow, I probably have to travel to events until July , so we are going to a duathlon in March (too cold to swim) and to Las Vegas Irongirl tri in April. Yippee!!

Teresa,
Sorry to hear about the snow...it was 70+ here yesterday and 65+ today. I have a lot of respect for those of you who keep up with your training indoors. I usually have to put my bike on a trainer in the winter, but so far I have even been able to ride outdoors.

What are the distances for the duathlon you are doing in March?

My first planned race is a duathlon on May 17.  My first tri is scheduled for 6/1 or thereabouts.  My first Oly is the following weekend.

OK, Cole.  I'm going to ask you much the same questions that I asked everyone else.

First, what is it that you (and your husband) want to get out of doing triathlons?

Short duathlon with a 2 mile run/ 12 mile bike/ 2 mile run. Should take me 3 or 4 hours since I have done nothing outdoors since September. Oh, and Cole, you just keep your nice weather to yourself, will ya!!

Teresa,
Thank you for your response. My first duathlon is a 2.4 mile run- 12 mile bike- 1.2 mile run. I appreciate you also telling me how long you expect it to take you. I know how long it takes me to ride 12 miles, but I don't know how to factor in fatigue from running.

Ron,
I need a goal to keep me focused....the duathlon in April is that goal. I ride (bicycles-road and trail) a lot from April to November. Last year I put about 2800 miles on my bikes. I need to keep up my fitness so that I am not too out of shape when riding season starts. With the shorter days, I am not able to ride enough to stay in shape. However, running is still an option. We are able to get in a walk/jog after work and before work. We are still able to ride on the weekends. The duathlon seemed like a good idea, but I am still not sure about the racing aspect. I have participated in a lot of "rides" but never anything that involves caring how fast I finish. Even though I am not fully comfortable with racing...the fear of being last is what keeps me training.

Training for a multi-sport event also keeps me from getting in a rut, it improves fitness, and keeps the body/muscles better balanced. I just wished that I actually liked running.

I was just kidding when I said 3-4 hours (I hope). I am really a slow runner, but am getting strong on the bike so I should be able to do the duathlon in less and 1 1/2 hrs.

Good stuff, Cole.  You obviously do a LOT of riding.  2800 miles last year?  Oh yeah!

Ok, so the next question is this.  What do you want to get out of being part of this group?

Oh, and my name is Rob, not Ron.     Ron is actually one of the guys who run this website.

Hi All,

Good to have you back, Ridge. I hope you had a good trip.

I'm thinking of doing a duathlon in April: 2.2 mile run/9 mile ride/ 2.2 mile run. I have never done one, and hope there are other slow people there if I do it

We actually saw the sun yesterday - that was very encouraging. I'm sick of our weather, but I have to remember why I love it here in the Pacific NW: no hurricanes, no giant insects, no reptiles, no humidity, nice scenery, four seasons.

I have been happy with my running progress, but am still VERY frustrated with getting sick every few weeks. Does this happen to any of you? I know my immune system is going from bad(from last year) to better(after tonsil surgery), but I'm still getting sick more than normal. I often get sick, or at least get a very sore throat, after some of my better workouts. Is there a huge drop in the immune system after workouts? If so, does anyone have any ideas about what to do after workouts to avoid susceptiblilty to sickness?

I know everyone has their own physical issues to deal with, and this one seems to be mine right now. It's encouraging to see the determination and spirit of you all when facing your giants (Andrea, catjammies, etc.) Keep up the good fight everyone!

Sorry about the wrong name RoB....I noticed that after I hit the submit button. The most appealing thing about this group (other than there are at least 2 other women about my age with kids) is gaining from the experiences of the group. It seems that most of you have done at least 1 triathlon before. I am very new to this (obviously since I really believed Teresa was going to do a sprint duathlon in 3-4 hours
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/surpr... ). I like having people to go to when I have questions. I like seeing other people's logs to help me understand how I am doing with my training. I like to know what obstacles other people deal with. I like the encouragement and humor that this group offers.

Jo,
I haven't dealt with any immune issues after workouts. I wonder if the cold temperatures affect the lungs differently. I haven't seen snow or been outside in your kind of weather for a very long time.

Jo, I'm not aware of degredation of the immune system at levels that we're exercising at.  In fact, getting moderate amounts of exercise like we're doing is generally beneficial to the immune system.  In contrast, major elite level competitors can jeopardize their health with really hard training.  But at the levels we're at, thats not an issue.  Again, generally the opposite.

Jo, have you talked to your doc about what might be going on?  I'm guessing you have, but just thought I'd throw that out there.  Definitely seems like a medical question.

Ridge,
That's good about the immune system. I do feel that I'm gaining ground in this area and getting stronger overall. I have been seeing an ENT specialist - she gave me the "all- clear" in early January, but maybe I need to go back if this keeps up ...or maybe just wait out the winter and see how things go in the spring. Today I feel normal and had a great run. We'll see how I feel tomorrow. I don't mean to be a whiner

Cole, I have finally started to enjoy running (just a little bit), so there's hope for you. It helps to have a goal like a triathlon or duathlon to force me to run. I like the health/physical benefits I'm seeing from training - plus it's changing the way I eat. Good luck with your plan, and go for it!

Hey, you're not being a whiner.  Being sick is no fun.  It affects EVERYTHING.  So don't worry about whining a little.  Its not.

Cole, starting to run can be a challenge, even for someone who's fit like you.  You have a decent aerobic base from all your cycling, but I'm guessing your muscles and body just arent used to the runnign motion and its stresses.  Without knowing what you've been doing so far, perhaps try a starting 5K plan.  A beginner plan.  This would incorporate a lot of walking first.  Then gradually add in small doses of running.  Doing walk/run combos for a while definitely helps condition the body for more running.   Is something like that workable do you think?

Thank you guys...It is nice to know that there are others who have not always loved running. It is also nice to know that there is hope for me.

Ridge,
I am on week 5 (of 8 weeks) of the couch-5K plan. I thought that I should be faster and it should take less time for me to "get into" running. I have 8 weeks until the duathlon, so I should be in good shape for completing the running part, but I don't think that I will be much faster than someone walking fast. My husband and I ran Saturday (total run time was 15 minutes), and it was the first time in the 5 week plan that I sort of had fun. Jo is right...there is hope.

Cole, for what its worth, I started back to running this summer after a long injury layoff.  I started with walk runs.  Mostly walk, a touch of runs.    I've slowly been able to build up.  A couple of weeks ago, I ran a 10K for the first time, averaging about an 8:45 min/mile.  I hope to continue slowly building up my running.  In fact, I was able to run 8 straight days the last week or so.

I found that I got into decent enough run condition that I could get into a very peaceful, tranquil state while running easily.  Very therapeutic.  Some times I would go out, and just lose myself while running.  It probably took me a couple of months or so to get to that point.

Hi Rob,

I'm brand new to Triathlons and to BT and would love to join your group. A little about me:

Name: Bunny/Jesse
Story: I'm 34 years old and have never been an endurance athlete. I am a very competitive person and in HS, I was a 4 sport athlete - Football, Hockey, Track (Shotput, Discus and 4X100) and Baseball. In 2005 I spent the summer trying out running and found that, once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. By the time the summer ended, I ran about 3 miles without too much difficulty. In 2007, I decided that I wanted a new personal challenge and had my eye on a Tri, but never made it happen. I was lazy. In late 2007, I had quite a medical scare where, for about a month, I thought I may have throat cancer. I committed to myself that, if it turned out not to be cancer I owed it to myself to make the Tri this year. Well, no cancer so...here I am!

Family Status: I am married with 2 children, ages 2 and 3 (almost 4). My oldest is also a special needs boy, having been diagnosed with Autism a couple of years ago now. I also work full time and am studying for the GMAT (hoping to go to Grad school in '08 or '09)

Current Training: Well - none I have been gearing up for this Tri and begin, in earnest tomorrow (Monday) with core work.

This Years' Races: I only have 1 booked - a sprint in Pewaukee, WI.

Goals: I also could afford to lose some weight (I'm at 221lbs. as of a few hours ago). I don't know my % body fat but I'm sure it's more than I like. I have a 38 inch waist and, as a side effect of this personal challenge that is training for a Tri, weight loss would be great!

I hope you still have room for me.

Jesse, absolutely, welcome!

It looks like you've been through a lot the last couple of years.  Kids, the autism diagnosis, the throat cancer scare, the career change (hopefully) to grad school.  You definitely need the relief that exercise gives!

I saw your signature.  J-Mac is a great story, isnt it?  Incredible.    It actually happened in the town where I live.

Anyway, welcome.  Glad to have you aboard!  This is rounding out to be an awesome group!

Jesse, over the next few days, I'll ask you some questions that I've asked the others.  So just giving you a heads-up.

Jesse,
Welcome! We are glad to have you in the group. I am glad that you have committed to exercise and improving your health. I train with my husband who was a HS football player and weighs about 15 pounds more than you. My husband had a heart attack 4 years ago while riding a bicycle. He had been trying to get in shape and lose weight for several months. We beleive that the exercise he had been doing all summer, is what saved him. He had built up collateral blood vessels in his heart that kept some blood flowing (enough to keep the heart beating). Needless to say, we are big fans of exercise. He still battles his weight, but adding the running to his cycling has made it a little easier. Good luck with your training, and we will be here to encourage you along the way.

Regarding the comments on running, and the love/hate relationship many in the group have (or is that a hate/hate relationship ... lol)...

Running is my least favourite of the disciplines as well, and after having spent many years biking and swimming extensively, but not focusing on running, have been having trouble getting my endurance up in this area.

As and FYI: I have started the heart rate zone training recently, and have been focusing on keeping my heartrate in the Zone 2 - Zone 3 areas. I have noticed significant improvements in my overall endurance doing this, and have found the runs to be much more enjoyable as well. Might be worth taking a read of some of the previous posts on this if you have not tried it.
