Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSEDcarrie639 - 2011-06-30 9:09 AM . . . but if you could go pro, would you, why or why not? Is there an advantage to being and AG'er when you are good enough to go pro? A lot of reasons. As Scott mentioned you may qualify as pro, but you're going to have your butt handed to you every time, so you'd rather stay an Age Grouper and be able to do things like qualify for Kona. Also, with regard to sponsorships, sometimes its better to be a fast age grouper than a mediocre pro (even though the pro is technically "faster"). Look as Lisbeth Kenyon. She's an age grouper who has won her division at Kona several times (and qualified to go pro). Fuel Belt just feautred her in a full page ad. There are lots of pros out there who have never been feautured in a full page ad. Take a look at IM results for any race outside of Kona, particularly with the women, you'll have several age groupers finishing in the top 10 overall and beating out several pros. On the flip side there are individuals who go pro (and remain pro) even though they know they're not super competative at the highest levels for other reasons (such as the fact that as a pro you pay $700 and can enter any IM during the year -- thus avoiding having to register a year in advance and being able to race for a cheaper price). |
