. . . but if you could go pro, would you, why or why not?  Is there an advantage to being and AG'er when you are good enough to go pro?

My guess is level of competition.  You can compete with the average Joe and Elites at the AG level for Kona slots, etc., or you can compete against other Pros.  I could be way off on this, but that's my guess.

A lot of reasons.  As Scott mentioned you may qualify as pro, but you're going to have your butt handed to you every time, so you'd rather stay an Age Grouper and be able to do things like qualify for Kona.  Also, with regard to sponsorships, sometimes its better to be a fast age grouper than a mediocre pro (even though the pro is technically "faster").  Look as Lisbeth Kenyon.  She's an age grouper who has won her division at Kona several times (and qualified to go pro).  Fuel Belt just feautred her in a full page ad.  There are lots of pros out there who have never been feautured in a full page ad.

Take a look at IM results for any race outside of Kona, particularly with the women, you'll have several age groupers finishing in the top 10 overall and beating out several pros.

On the flip side there are individuals who go pro (and remain pro) even though they know they're not super competative at the highest levels for other reasons (such as the fact that as a pro you pay $700 and can enter any IM during the year -- thus avoiding having to register a year in advance and being able to race for a cheaper price).

kaburns1214 - 2011-06-29 7:14 PM You may have won the gene pool lottery, but you still work hard.  There are no "easy" ways to Kona (unless you compete on the Biggest Loser).
Thank you and yes. And to reciprocate, it's why I think you could qualify as well because you are willing to do the work. In your case I think 2-3 years more of doing consistent training. Not huge volume training, just 365 days per year of s/b/r. You just have to love to train and you will start contending in the AG at the big races.

I'm not giving up.  I'm just realizing that short term I need to continue to train and improve and once I think I have a shot and need to pick my races wisely (can you say Ironman Korea or Wales?)

I'm not sure if you are asking me, but no one is going to be too excited about a 42 year old pro.

I'd be excited about a 42 year old pro (although I have no sponsorship opportunties to offer).

Check this out....  Just won $250 of performance improvement services from the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute here in town.  May be a start of a good weekend?  Time to go shopping.

Just finished ordering Blue Seventy Fusion Wetsuit.  Ordered from OneTri.com with 15% discount, and also ordered new Zoot Tri Top.  SAved $60.  Looks like TriSports.com is no longer the sponsor here?  I didn't see them on the Sponsor page, and a just ordered De Soto Tri Shorts a few weeks back.  Anyway, let's hope this thing fits!!  I spoke with a rep there, and they strongly suggested a Medium based on my build.

I've been running with a garmin lately and I think I have enough data points to see a pattern. I'm not sure if everyone is like this or not but, I noticed that my running pace looks like a wave. I start slow say 10:30 minutes and go down to 9 and spike back to 10:00 all the way downspiking in this  manner to say 6:30 and I'll end with a avg pace of 7:30-8:30 on shorter distances and 9-10 minutes on longer distances. Is this common or is there something I can do to smooth it out a little?

How was everyone's month? Low totals for me with my Dad in town for 2 weeks (thus all the golf!) and the AZ and NM fires killing air quality and keeping me inside some days when I should be training.

June's totals:
Bike:4h 34m 45s  - 67.86 Mi
Run:5h 44m 05s  - 31.1 Mi
Swim:2h 20m 44s  - 6397 Yd
Golf:

18h 30m

So, I always laugh when the roadkill is posted here - I never see roadkill, but this morning I saw so many 'live', I have to report to you.

1 tabby cat, 1 tuxedo cat, 1 raven that did not move at all as I ran past, 1 gray cat, 1 rabbit, a frog, and one last black cat. No roadkill....

Darn, had I known I was that close to 600 miles of biking I would have added 2 miles tonight.  Actually we cut our ride short by about 3 miles.  Swim needs to increase for July, a lot!

Run:21h 29m 58s  - 123.47 Mi

Live animals are good, dead ones are kind of depressing.  I saw several dead garter snakes running last night.  They may be snakes but they're small and I feel bad.

It just how the Garmin picks up satellites.  I use lap pace or average pace, which helps to smooth out the peaks and valleys.  Instantaneous pace can be deceiving.
