Taking a break from work.  (I just looked at my last post -- I promise, English really is my first language.)

This made me laugh.

This week and next are a little lighter on the volume as I head into my last race on 10/6. Still some decent intensity on the schedule but not as many hours.

Right now I am wrestling with whether to make the trip to South Bend Indiana for the Notre Dame Invitational Cross Country Meet on Friday afternoon. My son Gil is running for Alabama at the meet and there will be several top ranked teams there. Work schedule is fine for me to go but I would have to drive and thats a LONG way to drive from the Gulf Coast......Sure would be exciting though.

I agree with Rene!  You could also fly into Chicago and rent a car (done it many many times to get to South Bend).  If you go, try to get to the LaSalle Grill (might need reservations).  It's one of the few oases in the food-desert that is South Bend.  It is NOT light fare, but -- at least as of two years ago, and for many years before that -- very good.

Flying would definitely be preferred but since this is something I have just recently considered, airfare is ridiculously expensive. I could make the drive work and I actually enjoy long road trips but I have pretty much decided not to go. Fortunately, I will be able to make it to his remaining races for the Fall season including the SEC Championships and SE Regionals.

Rene - congrats on your PR.  Sounds like it was a good trial run for Florida!

Randy, seriously man... fly if you can.  Those long drives wear you out more than you realize (speaking from experience).  And you do have a race the following weekend (appealing to the competitor in you).

Michael, I was down in North Carolina over the weekend not too far from Brevard / Hendersonville.  Is that anywhere near where you go?  Some beautiful country there!  And great mountain biking trails.  A bit too much driving for the weekend, but it was great to catch up with some old friends!

I took a few days "off" from harder training mainly due to work and the weekend (plus a friggin' headcold) and my legs felt almost normal for a change when I woke up this morning.  Like Randy, I'm tentatively planning on racing in two weeks, so I did my last long run today (12 miles) and will do one more tough bike later this week and then taper a bit and catch up on some swimming.  Also, starting to lean toward doing the half marathon.  I just don't seem to have the strength in my legs this year for the full.  The long runs have been really challenging.  Not surprising as I tried to ratchet things up pretty quickly in August.

Half sounds wise to me. As Jason suggested earlier, keep training as much as possible as if it were the full (but skip those 18-20 mile runs), and then run the half and you could be really strong for it.

Yes, we were near each other. The cabin where we go is middle of nowhere, about 20 minutes southeast of Brevard (so not really towards Hendersonville, which is more northeast). It is near Cedar Mountain, which is a town the same way that other post offices constitute a 'town'. This last weekend, we also drove to Hendersonville (well, near there) to pick apples at an orchard that we've been visiting for 10 years, now. It was a tough season for them because of a frost, but we still got some very nice Romes, Pink Ladies, and Mutsu, and a lot of cider apples that we'll press next weekend. Our house smells like apples right now!

It is indeed a small world.  That's exactly where our friends' cabin is (actually their family's cabin as they share it among 7 cousins).  Off of the road that starts just north? of the fire station in Cedar Mountain (sorry, names escape me now).  Anyway, I can see why you enjoy going there so much.  Absolutely beautiful area!

Hi! I'm reading. I miss you. Michael, my heart aches to hear of your troubles. I hope they're resolved soon. I need to catch up on race results, but congratulations to all of you with results you're happy with!

I'm only running lately. I've got a 60 mile relay race with friends this Saturday, then a half marathon on October 14th. My husband comes home around that time so I'll be able to get into triathlon mode again. Yay!

Reasonover Creek Rd.  I know it well.  I sometimes run down that road to Fawn Lake to do some trail running in Dupont.  We're a couple of miles from there, on a dirt road off a gravel road off of Rich Mountain Rd. off of 276.  Just thinking about it makes me feel good.  Now, back to the desk...

Yep - that's it!  I had the "pleasure" of riding on Reasonover on a hybrid bike fitted for my friend's wife who is over a foot shorter than I am (and down the gravel path at the end of it).  Lots of mountain bikers on the trails near there where we hiked in Dupont.  Not used to almost getting run over when I hike.  Anyway, very active mountain bike area.  Almost made me want to think about taking it up :-)  Lucky you... nice change of pace from Columbia in the summers (especially with no a/c)!

Good to hear from you Blanda, and nice running.

Hey gang, just realized we hit page 100. Woohoo!  I don't know what it is about powers of ten that get me excited...

Great workouts for me today after a cruddy day at work -- ride, then run, then swim.

Yes, mountain biking is king there.  I've found them to be very conscientious, at least.

I had my first mountain biking experience on Big Rock trail, taken there by a very talented mountain biker who figured "he's a cyclist; he can do it".  Well, I could (except I did walk the bike over two spots on the descent that were just too scary), but it scared the cr@p out of me.  Those mountain bikers are crazy!

I guess I've been working too hard.  I was working until 1:00am last night, then went to bed, and apparently slept through my family getting up and my alarm and didn't stir one bit until 10:00am this morning.  I woke up and looked at the clock and couldn't believe that it said 10:00am.  (I normally get up around 5 or 6.)

Michael-you must have needed the sleep/rest.

Not much going on here.  Feel a little lost with having a light training week. Just a swim at lunch at that's it for today. The next few days are a little busier. I have been able to get some yardwork done. Funny how its too hot to do certain things around the yard in the Summer but not to hot to run/bike outside.

I am really getting in to the build for IMAZ. Six weeks of killing it before a couple nice easy weeks to recover. The volume is going up and so is the fatigue. I do feel like I am finally making some fitness breakthroughs. It seems like for much of the year I was on a plateau or at least making very slow progress. All of a sudden I am doing paces/intervals/workouts that used to destroy me and feeling pretty good while doing them.

I was running last night and my super easy recovery pace was faster than my all out 5K pace at my first triathlon :) (that was five years ago, so it didn't happen overnight). Sometimes it is nice to look back for perspective. The cooler weather has certainly made the running much, much more pleasurable.

ETA--all of that improvement is coming in the bike and run. Swimming is still my achilles heel-something I plan to work on very seriously over the winter.

On that other website which will not be named they have a very nice write-up about the book with a lot of pictures. It is worth heading over to look at it (if you haven't already).

The article discussing the Crowie book on ST has some great pictures. May have to spend some time at the book store checking it out.

Well, the weekend is right around the corner. I think we have some folks racing. Jamie and Nate are teeing it up and Nick is doing Augusta HIM.  Anyone else racing?  Any big plans?

Nothing major on deck for me.  Decided not to make the trip to South Bend to see Gil race. We have alot going on over the next month and the family budget would breathe easier without me making the trip.  I plan to get some training done, maybe do some yardwork and watch some college football.

Yeah, it was the article on ST that got me interested in the book.

I'll be at the same race as Jamie and Nate.  No big expectations for me as I'm just geting back to training.  I'm certainly enjoying the cooler weather -- free speed!

Hi all, checking in.  It's been a tough week with driving to and from San Diego and trying to get training in.  I work the next 19 out of 21 days but it's going to be shift work so I should be able to get my training done.

I have a sleeveless wetsuit but it looks like I will need a full for the cold waters at IM AZ.  In general, I don't like the feeling of full suits as it seems to constrict my shoulders.  I suppose the technology has gotten better?  I prefer not to lay down $600 for a full suit I will rarely use, so I'm thinking about renting one for the week.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  Jim

X2. I'm using mine this weekend then it sits in a closet for 6 months. If it can be useful to you, you're more than welcome.
