owl_girl - 2012-07-07 12:38 PM I'm hoping to run a marathon in June.  I'll have a nice big running base built up by then. Wink

Where is that going to be?  June sounds hot! Tongue out

Alaska!  I should be fine. Laughing

Good luck, Johnny!

What's everyone else up to?

As for me Tracy, I'm up to 5'8" and about 157 lbs. Laughing

But if you're asking about training or racing, I'm finally back off the "rest" wagon.  I got a short 30 mile ride in this morning and I am planning an easy 5 miles before hitting a solid week next week.....I hope.  I need to get my training levels up in a hurry if I am going to be trained up for the 2 HIM's I have planned in about 8 weeks.  I feel like I have a very long way to go before I am ready and the storm work I just went through didn't help me any.

I also apologize for not being around for what seems like a long time, even before the storm, and I feel like I haven't been doing enough to help all of you out as you progress in your training.  Hopefully I'll be able to get back on both the training horse and the mentoring horse starting tomorrow.  I'll try to get caught up on all of the post's over the past week in the coming days.

I think you get a pass due to the storm.  You better get back to it, though!

I got a very nice 46 mile ride followed by a 2 mile transition run done today.  I was going to climb one our local ugly hills, however, my husband went salmon fishing this morning.  He got back (with his limit) just as the sun came out and the heat and humidity rose.  (By heat, I mean it got into the 60's.  Don't laugh.  Those temps wipe me out!)  I decided it would not be a good idea to do the climb so I just rode an easy route with about 1000 feet of elevation gain.  This snow white girl got sunburned!  Arg!!!!  My arms hurt!!!

Tomorrow, we are going to do a local bike Tour.  I'm going to pull the munchkin in the bike trailer with my old mountain bike with knobby tires on the 13 mile route.  My husband is going to ride the 30 miler since his ribs still hurt.  A few of my friends are doing the 45 mile and 70 mile rides.  Should be a fun day!

No need to apologize. This is why we are a great group, there is always someone around to jump in a lend a hand or a little extra encouragement.

Now don't hammer yourself too hard trying to make up for missed training while you get ready for the HIMs!

I agree about the bike challenge and the heat! Looks like today is our last day for this extreme heat, at least for a while. Now if we could just get some rain. Remember that pic I took of the fish in my friends pond - well the fish are starting to die . The pond is too shallow and way too hot.

Thanks for the compliments on the photo. That was taken at last weeks race. It really captured the moment for me and I didn't even know they were taking my picture!

60's?! That would feel really cold to me right now. I can't even go outside without sweat dripping down my arms. I constantly feel like I need a shower even though I just had one. Not complaining though - I promised this winter that I would not complain about the heat.

Glad you had a good ride today and have a blast tomorrow!

We're still building fires in the woodstove.  It helps take some of the damp chill out of the house.

Tracy, there are no fires being built in northern Indiana for sure.  Well, unless they are for cooking on a grill or at a campsite.

_________

I am back on the training wagon as of yesterday.  The plan didn't go according to the way I planned it but I was at least able to get my 30 mile ride in but I missed the 5 mile run later in the evening.  My daughters boyfriend came over and he got "the talk" from me.  But not before his parents came to pick him up.  We spent a little bit of time talking about what my expectations are as a father and if he ever mistreated my daughter that no one may ever find his rotting corpse.  I didn't really say that but I did tell him how important my girls are to me and that I would step in front of a bullet for them.

Anyway, I got 2 rides in today.  One is in my training log but not really a training ride.  Lis got a new bike and we took it out for a spin.  I would like to say it was a quick one but it wasn't really...............ummm.......quick.  We went 8.5 miles in about 50 minutes.  That was okay with me though.  I think we both enjoyed it and I hope we get into the habit of this together.  Later I went out for my own 30 miler and tried to crank out some relatively hard reps to get back into the swing of things.  Hopefully I'll have the next couple of months to get into HIM shape before my A race and planning HIM get here.

Dirk glad you are back at it and your speech to the boyfriend reminds me of my Dad. It was a little embarrassing at the time but I always knew (still know) that if I ever needed ANYTHING my Dad would go to bat for me. I'm sure your girls feel the same.

Had a crazy ride this afternoon - deer, snakes, storm blew in and I ended up back home on the trainer. Just tried to get my data from my Garmin 305 and it is dead . Won't charge, turn on or anything. Bummer. If anyone has any tips for getting this thing working again let me know. Otherwise it looks like I'm going Garmin shopping.

I'll be out of town for a few days. I'm heading to the Lake of the Ozarks with some of my friends from high school and all of our kids. I'm really looking forward to it and I have sworn to myself No Training. I have not had a day off in weeks. As I'm typing this I'm thinking how I can probably squeeze in a swim .

Hi Junkies, Just posted my race report.

The race went really well overall. I still haven't gotten over this mental block that seems to be holding me back on the run, but I'm super happy with the swim and bike.

My knee is a bit sore so I'll be taking a few days off of training.

Fun Day for me today, I was finally able to get some spare time and made it to the HIM bike course.  Rode the entire course and then ran 5 miles.  Total time 3hr51m.  Not bad, but the run was terrible.  I still need to get my bike fitness up to be able to consistently run after.

Dirk/Brenda:  Not sure if it will help you or not, but I put some mental notes about the course into my training log.  If you have the course map up you can get an idea of the areas I am referring to.  Also the elevation chart at the bottom of the map is just about spot on!

Try holding the lap button and the mode button at the same time for about 5-10 seconds.  My 305 would lock up occasionally and that is the fix. It actually began to happen pretty frequently toward the end of my battery's life.

Her's a link to the owners manual, page 6 is where the instructions are for what to do (at the bottom in italics).

Garmin 305

If that doesn't work there's always the 910XT.  I love my watch!

Thanks Dirk! I bought the watch used from the BT classifieds and it didn't come with all the instructions. Looks like it JUST came back to life while I was typing this message but I bet it is on its last leg. Glad it came back though. I really don't want to buy anything new right now. I'd rather put it on my Christmas list. I'll remember that tip for next time!

From my race report comments

JeffY - 2012-07-09 7:11 AM

Sorry you are disappointed by the run.  How does that pace compare to your open 5k time?  I ask because when you describe yourself as having a mental issue keeping you from running faster, it sounds to me like the Central Governor is kicking in to limit you.  The Central Nervous System will stop you and it does this by either sapping your will or sapping your strength (not sure of the mechanism), but it does this usually in response to an elevated core temperature.

I haven't done a 5k in a while, my last one was in December and I did it in 24:02 - 7:45/mi and I did a 3 mile race in March in 23:04 - 7:41/mi.

I think I have more in me than the 9:00/mi pace I did the race in, but I can't seem to force the issue mentally.

Another apology - I've been offline since Tuesday.  I'll catch up as possible through the day.  Work is a mess, so I'm digging out.  It looks like there were some nice races in there.

As for my week, I was able to bike like a crazy person (big thanks to my wife for putting up with me and manning the fort).  Starting with the climbfest with Jonathan last Sunday and ending with my own climbfest yesterday, I was able to get in 20+ hours, 340+ miles, and 26,000+ feet of climbing, in some nice windy weather just for added fun.  It's been hot, though not hot like some of you are dealing with.  My legs actually feel pretty good and I'm back to "normal" training this week.

I was really hoping to race with Jonathan over the weekend, but we had some family stuff on Sat. I couldn't avoid so I missed the race.

Warren that is pretty awesome job on the bike this past week. If I was able to put those hours up for a month that would be a major acomplishment. That's a great job and it's great to hear that you are no worse for wear and feel pretty good considering the effort you put in last week.

Speaking of lot's work I was able to get a very nice week of training in this past week. I put up just under 15 hours of training last week. It helped that I was off from work and my wife wasn't so I had a lot of lattitude in getting my work in whenever I wanted to which was pretty nice. It made for a great week of training and more importantly I feel pretty good. I think my body gave up and stopped protesting and is finally getting with the program. I am hoping to have another big week this week as my first Tri is in 3 weeks and I really want to make sure that I am ready for it and honestly I really do want to do well even though it will be my first one.

Karl that's great to hear that you and your wife are looking to do your first Tri in Oct. That will give you both plenty of time to work on your swim and for her to work on her biking. Plus you both can train and support each other.

Back in town and looking to get caught up. Still have to check the race reports and I'll hopefully get to those over the next couple days. My daughter and I had a WONDERFUL time and stayed an extra day. Although the campground was 275 miles away we ran into two sets of neighbors that live within 2 miles from our home who were camping also. That was just too funny. Both Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes Michigan were absolutely beautiful with clear blue water. It was amazing.

Tony - so glad you got in a good training week on your week off. 20ish days until your first tri?! How very exciting!! You've put in the time so you'll be ready and don't let your body or anyone else tell you otherwise.

Karl - I'm envious that you'll have the triathlon to share with your wife. How fun to have your life partner as a training partner. I have a feeling that she'll love it and be totally hooked.

Warren - welcome back! Impressive bike miles you got in! Glad you're on the same TdF team as me.

Matt - I read your HIM notes. Thanks so much for sharing. Congrats on getting a really nice brick workout done yesterday.

Dirk - glad you're all caught up on the storm damage and you survived the workload. I know your bike miles with Lisa are slower than your normal training but some things are just worth it no matter. Who knows where this may lead for her?

Dina - I absolutely love your avatar/facebook picture. I saw it last week when we were camping and thought it was from some inspirational poster that I couldn't see the words. That's a great shot of you. Have fun on your trip!

Vero - congrats on finishing your race. Don't beat yourself up over your run pace. It's bound to be slower in a tri than in a stand alone race and having something to improve upon is a good thing.

Tracy - how does one get sunburned in 60 degree weather? I can't imagine building a fire to keep the chill out of the house in the middle of summer. What's the hottest it gets there? Hope your 13 mile ride pulling your son was enjoyable.

Samantha - I've been on my trainer a lot too with the heat. At least you're getting the miles in. Like you, I'd like to thank Stan for suggesting the TdF challenge.

Paul - being a claims adjuster in the midwest the last couple weeks with the storms wouldn't be fun. I'll look for your race report on your DU.

Hope the rest of you are doing well and training hard! Have a wonderful week!

Question.

I've never used a race belt as I've typically just pinned the race bib to my shorts or shirt which I put on during transition.  If I were to want a race belt, where do I go to buy one?

Brenda, small world isn't it?!  One of my most ridiculous small world stories:  I ran into someone I knew from childhood at the TAJ MAHAL!!  It was crazy.  I went to the University of Michigan and on Taj Mahal grounds I saw a group of people with Michigan State t-shirts on (it was a student group), and of course being the rival school I had to say something and I yelled GO BLUE.  Then suddenly I hear my name!  And there was someone I knew in the group!!!  A childhood friend's kid sister.  It had probably been nearly 10 years since I saw her, and then I run into her in India... So crazy!
