By the way, how would you like to be another 1-2 minutes faster for each 10 miles ridden in your Time Trials?  Lower your aerobars more.  You should get your collar bones about level with your seat.  It can be really hard to get comfortable in that position, but it would be faster if you don't lose power.

Wow!  I love the lines you drew!  Thank you!  I've been wanting to lose another spacer.  I'm super comfortable on it so I don't think it would be a big deal.

I got some pictures and a video on my road bike.  I'll post it later on Friday.  I have my suspicions on what needs to be changed.  I'm wondering if you'll think the same thing.  I won't sway your opinion, though. Wink

I had a long conversation with my favorite mechanic at my LBS today.  He wishes he had one of those cool bike fitting thing-a-ma-gigers.  He's ready to help me dial in my position on both bikes.  My LBS rocks, big time!

Tracy, if you haven't already read this article I suggest you do.  It will be a good way to understand the goal of tri bike fit.  And as a result, it implies what you want in a road bike fit.  I know your tri bike fits well, so we may just work backwards from that to your road bike...

http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit.html

Then, as a weekend project, get your husband to help you carefully take all the measurements needed for this bike fit calculator: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=FIT_CALCULATOR_INTRO

It would be interesting to take their TRI bike recommendation with your measurements and see how it compares to your B2 that we know fits well.  But I think it will be a great double-check for us in what it tells you about your recommended road bike fit.

And it looks to me like this page holds all of the geometry specs for your B2.  I reference this because I think it's already pretty close to a good road bike fit for you also.  (lucky!) and these values may help us locate a suitable road bike frame for you if your current one won't work out.

http://2011.feltracing.com/South-Africa/2011/TT-TRI/TT-TRI-Series/B2.aspx

Thank you, Jeff.  I'll check out all of these.

Happy Friday everyone!

Tracy & Jeff I am enjoying the bike photos, diagrams and discussion!

I started the day with a 6 mile run on the trail while the sun was rising. 27 degrees, no wind, sunshine on the frosted trail and the puppy running by my side - that is my happy place .

Now if I could just get rid of this blasted headache Yell.

Karl I was thinking of you on this run because of all the clothes I wore. I had on an Under Armour base layer shirt, and nike running sweatshirt that has a hood and hand covers, ear warmer head band thing, fleece lined running tights, a pair of thin yoga pants over the running tights, gloves and wool socks. For the 2nd lap I took off the gloves and hood and unzipped my sweatshirt but it takes a lot to keep me warm! That is probably because I run so slow .

I've enjoyed the bike discussion as well. I'm sure I could benefit tremendously if I took a few pics of how I look.

I got in my first long, slow run in two, almost three weeks. I ran 7 miles and felt great, not counting the soreness in my hamstrings and butt from doing a hard leg workout on Tuesday. My soreness meant I ran even slower than usual, but I am gratfeul for NO KNEE PAIN, as in NO IT BAND issues this morning!!! YAY! My body is definitely tired and some friends are talking about mountain biking tomorrow and I want to pass, but not sure that I can.. AAHHHH!

I think Jeff really enjoys doing this kind of stuff.

Dina/Warren, I've tried hinting (perhaps not even hinting) that interval training on the bike isn't directly helpful for us TTers (which triathletes are).  Most cycling training plans assume you will be a bike racer and therefore DO focus to some extent on explosive power.

We don't really need that.  If you are doing one of Jorge's workouts for instance, what's the entire duration from beginning to end?  And if you have any sort of power measuring device, what does it say is the AVERAGE from beginning to end?

Despite the high numbers you maintain during the high intensity portions, I think your average will be lower than if you rode it like a single hard tempo ride.  Because your rest periods will be very low power.  But in a hard tempo ride (perhaps I should call it a threshold ride?) you will be going as hard as you can comfortably handle from beginning to end.  It's worth an experiment anyway...those of you who have a power number, what are the averages you are seeing for an entire Jorge workout?

Warren, you mentioned all boats rising or something to that effect....I have no evidence of this but I really feel like I'm riding better in my 40s than in my 20s when I was a dedicated roady and had an elite runner's cardio system.  Why?  Shouldn't be.  The only thing I can think of is that I had been squatting very heavily in those years in between.

My only possible guess as to why is that perhaps the muscles are most metabolically efficient at X% of max strength?   So if my max strength goes up, then efficiency increases at around my threshold???  Don't know.  But even if that max power stuff helps, it's not enough to beat out the value of steady state tempo or threshold rides. (IMO)

I was actually listening to this discussion and I subscribed to it a little while after you suggested it a couple of months or so ago.  If you look back a couple of months, I started doing the 3 hour intensity rides at close to, at and over threshold for a few weeks.  However the mileage on my legs was beginning to take it's toll on my marathon training and I had to back off to make sure I didn't crash my runs.  I also think I was re-developing my sports induced asthma symptoms by riding so long, so frequently at such a high level of intensity.

I definitely see the logic behind your position but right now I can't keep up the high intensity in both running and cycling.  I plan to see if I can pick it up again once I am through Boston and then hope to carry that into my HIM's this season.

BTW, my sports induced asthma was mostly my fault.  I am supposed to use an inhaler 15-20 minutes prior to cycling but I forget nearly all of the time.  Were I to take it correctly I doubt I would have any issues. Once I notice the symptoms I have found it requires me to back off for a few weeks to bring it completely under control.

I run slower on the treadmill at a higher heart rate than outside.  I’m not sure if it’s the heat inside versus outside, or the boredom, or what.  I also totally agree that treadmills are all quite different in terms of actual speed.  I use a foot pod calibrated while I run outside, and the indoor treadmills will vary ~20-40 seconds/mile.  So that could be part of the issue too.  When indoors, I think it’s best to run by feel and heart rate.

I am exactly the same.  I have concluded that it is most likely because of the heat inside the house or the gym that contributes to this condition.  For me all of my treadmills runs for more than 2 years have been during the winter months and none during the warmer temps.  For this reason I can only figure it's the heat acclimation, or lack thereof, driving my HR higher.

KWDreamun - 2013-03-07 5:49 AM Question for all my northern running friends which is almost everyone.  Today it was COLD!  Prior to running i rode the bike on the trainer for 30 minutes and came in and changed shirts it was so wet (I was hot).  I put on a short sleeve shirt and long sleeve shirt, long running pants, gloves and skull hat thing and I had on socks.  About the end of mile 1, my feet got so cold i could not feel them.  I only ran 3 today but gosh the last 2 were MISERABLE.  What did I do wrong?

Sorry Karl, I just can't relate.  My feet never get cold at those temperatures as long as I'm running.

I don't know if there is enough room in those shoes, but if there is, add a 2nd pair of socks on top of your usual running socks.

I am the same as Jeff.  I have run in sub zero temps without having cold feet after the first mile or two.  However, each of us are different and handle varying temps differently.  But..........I would agree with Matt that you should always change your socks prior to going out on a colder run after a ride on the trainer.  The sweat draining into your shoes and soaking your socks was the most likely contributor to cold feet.

HOW SORE IS TOO SORE? WHEN TO TELL IF I REALLY NEED TO REST?

Okay, I am ridiculously sore from head to toe. I ran a 46 minute tempo run on Tuesday morning and then I hit legs and shoulders hard (lifted as heavy as I could). Swam a short 20 minute swim at lunch and ended the day with a slow and easy 2 hour bike ride on the trainer. On Wednesday, I did a 40 minute swim at lunch and then hit the gym after work for a 1 mile warm up run and then hit back and biceps as hard as I could.

This morning, I could barely get out of bed when my 4:45 a.m. alarm went off. I almost skipped my morning swim - long, easy 70 minute swim. My husband encouraged me to go swim.... this is the first time he has ever kicked me out of the bed and told me to go work out (kinda awesome). I got up and went to the pool. Took about 15 laps to get warmed up and had a long swim, but did not cover the distance I hoped to. When I got out, I could feel all the soreness again.

In general, I feel really good, I don't mind feeling sore... makes me smile to know how hard I am working my body.... but, am I being counterproductive to keep pushing when I feel this sore? Do I really need to give my body more rest?

Jen, sounds like you are describing just the typical DOMS pain from your resistance training.  As long as you aren't referring to tendon/joint pain then you can just suck it up and do all of your typical endurance training!

But my rule of thumb for strength training is to never hit a muscle again with weights until the soreness from the previous workout is gone.

BTW, there is nothing counterproductive about your soreness.  It's good.  It shows that you've been inconsistent with the strength training!

Thanks Jeff... knew I could count on support here to keep going... LOL. No joint  or tendon pain, just muscle soreness. Looking forward to my Friday morning run and lunchtime chest & triceps session.

Again, as I usually do, I agree with Jeff.  I carry soreness much of the time.  Especially through my normal training weeks, build phase and sometimes recovery weeks.  But there is a balance to look for.  If you are feeling more tired than normal or have trouble completing routine kinds of work outs, you may need the break for an overall body rest.  Don't be afraid to work out with the same things and make yourself more tired though.  Experiment with your body and determine your areas of limitations.  That's how we learn to push ourselves harder and make fitness improvements.

Edit:

HA!  I am the first one on the 100th page!  I win!!

Tracy very nice and same here today. I got a 6.5 mile run on a beautiful warm sunny day for a change. It certainly was much better than the last two days of snow, rain and wind.

27 mile ride in 22 mph gusts of wind and clouds but at least I got outside on my bike for a change!

2hr and 35 miles on the trainer! Longest ride this year and it was absolutely brutal! At least I get to run in 50 degrees today!

Tracy, Dina and Matt nice work with the bike workouts. I am schedule to do a 3:15 ride on the trainer today and sooooo don't want to do it. Another Jorge torture session like slowly being roasted over a bed of coals. My legs are trash today but you guys have got me motivated to give it shot later on this afternoon.

Very jealous of all of all you outside in sunny warm weather.  We've actually had a small opening of high 30s low 40s, which is "warm" for me this time of year.  With snowbanks and salt on the roads, no way am I taking my bike outside, but running in shorts outside for a change is nice!

um, Warren. 30s and 40s = shorts weather?

Originally they were predicting that we'd get like 4-5 inches from that snowstorm that came through last week, but it actually ended up missing us altogether.  I was SO happy that it did!

Today our temp here got into the 60s.  I got out for a run, but I was not able to force myself for a bike ride as frankly my legs are just tired.  And I feel very lame for saying that with what everyone else is saying they've worked through!  Yesterday I got in 3 runs for a total of 17 miles (3/11/3) and today I ran another 4, and I would *like* to run another 3 later tonight, but I'm not sure yet about that!

I've also got some homework to do because I've got my PT session tomorrow morning and I need to go back and take some notes on what you guys said to be sure I know what to say to my physical therapist :D

I was able to get the bike workout in today and did 3 hours. I cut it short 15 minutes my legs are just very tired and a little tight from all the work this week. I really had to push myself to finish as well. I think at around 2:15 my legs were ready to call it a day but I was able to push through it and finish. I think you guys really motivated me to get this one in today as I was very close to skipping it. Besides it gave me an excuse to have a few beers this evening to forget about how my legs are feeling.

Warren I also did my run yesterday in shorts as well. I think it was a little warmer though in the upper 40's but really nice out. I think mid 40's is about my limit with running shorts anything colder and I'm wearing running pants.

I'm super proud of everyone for getting in some long and very important workouts this weekend.  I was able to get the dog to run 5 miles today.  That's about all she had in her before she started to get bored and want to wander around a bit....which basically means she ends up tripping me.  I think if I was able to hold a pace in the mid 7's she would be happy as a clam running, but 9 min/mile is not exactly enough exercise for her.

I am preparing to head to Ohio tomorrow after I get off work.  I found out my dad is having a heart cath on Tuesday morning and I am planning on being there.  He reported to me that the doc thinks he has 3 arteries 100% blocked.  They are planning to install stints if they can but anything other than that is undetermined at this point.  My dad has had a triple bypass already and his health has been bad for several years.

I would appreciate your prayers for my dad for the next couple of days if you think about it.

I had the weather to get a ride in outside today but wasn't able to take advantage of it.  Lis and I went shopping for some new flooring and it took long enough that I didn't feel like I had the time with the other things I needed to get done tonight.  I did get a nice 4 mile run in outside in shorts like Warren and Tony did, so that will suffice.  The run was a little faster than normal with an average pace of 7:42.  It felt pretty easy but I have no data for HR because I have been having problems with my Garmin the past couple of days.   It did a complete reset and I lost all my data and settings and it still won't sync all of my bike data.  I'll have to look into it as I have time.

Edit:

BTW, I got my longest run of the season in last Friday.........21 miles in 2:54:55 with 2 miles a little faster than marathon pace.  These 2 miles came at mile 18 (7:14) and 19 (7:20) to let me feel what hard miles on tired legs would feel like.  My foot seems to be doing well too.  And tis week is a recovery week.  I have one more training cycle with high mileage runs of 21, 22 and the last week before the taper will be 18-20 miles for the last long run.

I ran the Shamrock Scurry 5k on Saturday, the day after a long, slow 7 mile run (building back up from IT band issue). The course was very hilly and my finish time: 31:43 and I placed 249 out of 630. Want to know the awesome part - I did while pushing 2 kids in a double jogging stroller.... I win!

Went mountain biking later in the day and totally bonked. Last week's training caught up to me. I've been dragging all day today and took a 2 hour nap with the kiddos (which I never do). I am supposed to get up and do a 2 hour session on the trainer in the morning, but am seriously considering skipping it (or making it a short 45 minute ride instead) and giving my body some extra rest. I am already planning to swim at lunch.

Dirk good luck and have a safe trip. Your Dad will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everything goes well for him. It sounds like your training for Boston is going very well, awesome job on the 21 mile long run. I think you may find that you are going to exceed your expectations for this marathon. Glad to hear that your foot is holding up and not giving you any issues as well.

Jen congrats on the 5K. I am very impressed by that fact that you finished ahead of 381 other people and you were pushing a double jogging that is pretty freakin awesome! You sound exactly how I feel. Get some rest.

*Warning*  Mommy brag time!

My little munchkin did a 2 mile race today in 24:47!  Woo hoo for the 3 year old!  I did this race when I was 35 weeks pregnant in 21:19.  He's getting fast!

Tracy, congrats on the munchkin run...lol that is awesome!

Jen, congrats on the 5K and yes that is a very hilly course, congrats!

Dirk, prayers are for your dad!  Also congrats on the run.

My hat is off to all of ya'll for the biking.  It was 54 today and it was just to cold for me to ride outside early so i got on the trainer instead.  Those of ya'll doing the trainer for 2 - 3+ hours, my hat is off to ya'll.

We are having a small dualathlon this weekend and I haven't ridden my tri bike since Oct..yikes that will be scarry, I might just ride my road bike.

i am sooooooo ready for winter to be over, we have 1 more cold front coming thru this week and maybe that will be it.

jgerbodegrant - 2013-03-10 7:52 PM I'm super proud of everyone for getting in some long and very important workouts this weekend.

Yeah, I'm dreading the day my pup is not satisfied by just being near me. He went 2.5 miles with me on the trail the other day not on leash (there was no one around) and never ran off once. I'm sure this won't last much longer though! He does this thing where he sort of yawns and lets out a whine like - aren't you finished yet?! How old is your dog now?

RunningYogini - 2013-03-09 8:05 PM 45 mile bike ride in the warm sunshine.  Are you jealous??? Cool

Dirk I will be praying for your Dad. My Dad has had a history of health issues also with quadruple bypass being one of the things on the list. I know how you feel.

Nice job on your runs! It's gotta feel good knowing you have made it this far into your training and your foot is holding up so well!
