Did my 45 min swim tonight. This was the first time that I have done the 1/2 IM distance at once. It wasn't that bad and I was hitting my 1oo yds right about 2 min the whole way.

Nice job!

I did about a mile of OWS this morning!  Nice morning for a swim in the lake, although this hot spell has the lake warming rapidly!

The water temp at our OWS last night was around 78 and it felt disgusting!  There were small pockets of really cold water that I'd hit and slow down around to enjoy the relief.

Did 2 hours of the Spinnervals 13.0 - Tough Love DVD.  Holy crap. That stuff is intense.

I swear half the time we were out of the saddle.  How does that improve overall cycling fitness? I thought the goal was to stay in the saddle, especially for climbing. On the brightside, my arms feel like they got a workout!

Nice workout...I haven't done any of the Spinnervals but have heard great things about it. I would like to get a indoor trainer for the bike so I can get some time in during the hot summer. Any suggestions? I don't really ant rollers though.

I'm having an absolutely insane day at work so I'm really looking forward to my workout tonight - 2,000 yard swim followed by an hour of aqua jogging. I expect to look like a prune when I exit the pool!

I feel like I've been gone for a bit, but I have been checking in on the thread.  Glad to see everyone's getting some good training in, IMLP is coming up soon for a lot of you

I got a lot of great training in over the weekend on the bike.  Was up in Summit County at my brothers for the weekend and got some real altitude training in.  Summit County is mostly in the 9k-10k ft elevation range.  Not much in terms of flat either, so some great hill training.

Saturday I got a 19mile mountain bike ride in up there with my brother.  First time I got to ride a high quality full suspension mountain bike.  WOW what a difference compared to my 10 year old hard tail.  I was able to just put the power to the wheel and really take off on the flats and uphills.

Monday I got a 50mile ride in starting at Breckenridge at about 10k feet.  The ride dropped to about 9k feet over 10 miles, up over a small hill (~800ft in ~2-3miles).  Back down to 9k on the way down, then a 9mile climb from 9k to 12k (Loveland Pass, which is one point of the continental divide).  I then rode that same route backwards to go get my car.  All together, around 5k+ of climbing over 50miles.

Tuesday (Today) I got another 50 miler in around the county up there with around 2k ft of climbing, but it pretty much all came on some good climbs as opposed to rollers.

I think I'm going to be able to do really well on the olympic Kathleen and I have on Sunday.  I know she's mentioned there's one killer climb about 6 miles into the bike leg (~600ft in 2/3 of a mile... yes, think 15-18% grade).  I think I'm ready to just sit there and spin through it without burning a lot of energy.  I've been feeling really strong on hills over the last month and hopefully can use that to my advantage and save a lot more energy than most will on that climb.

Oh and over the last week I've noticed my weight is down near/below 150lbs [fluctuating between 145 and 153] (I was 170lbs with ~23% body fat a year and a half ago).  I haven't been that weight in over ten years.  I know weight is a bad indicator, but based on what my lower stomach looks like, I can tell my body fat percentage has gotten pretty low as well, so it's a good thing.  Hopefully it doesn't make me too much like a dense rock in the water though ;-)

So I've been missing alot of workouts due to some family issues.  My wife's company has been in the process of being bought out  (which happened today) and they axed the whole executive staff.  So far all indications are that she is going to be fine (and may get a promotion out of it) and they're sending her off for more travel. However, the new company hired the 'Bobs'  who haven't finished their assessment, so we'll see.  If she does get the axe we'll be fine, just no Italy trip or tri bike next year

I know its her problem and not mine but she's been a wreck the past week so I feel I just need to be there.

I wonder if anyone gets the Bobs reference.

Went to the pool again last night, still a 30 minute wait, didn't swim again, fourth time in a row;  I could be patient and wait but its not my strong suit.  I need to find a new pool but can't really add any additional expenses until our job situation is settled, the university I attended lets alumni swim for free, but the hours aren't great in the summer.

PennState - 2010-07-06 2:13 PM My brick today was in 90 deg heat.

As for a trainer I have a computrainer which is a great tool, but pricey!

Fluid trainers are generally quieter than wind trainers. There are also magnetic trainers.

Rollers are supposed to be the best, but YMMV.

I didn't even know it got up to 90 in Pennsylvania (sp?)!  Ouch.

Bob's = Office Space

Yes, get the reference ;-)

Being there for support is definitely very important.  She supports you in your IM training, so it's definitely important to support her back.  Actually, it's more important.  Glad it looks promising for her, hopefully it works out for the best and she's happier in the end and you're happier with an even nicer tri bike next year ;-

You're really taking advantage of your vacation!

12k are you serious?  You could probably throw a rock into space from that distance.  Can you even breathe?

If I didn't take advantage of the time off, I'd be doing disgracing all of you who have to manage your time.  I already feel I'm not doing enough each day to be worthy of the gift of this much free time.

As for the breathing... Surprisingly, I was actually feeling really good even riding up at that altitude.  I did keep the HR much lower earlier in the climb and then waited longer than normal before trying to give the last push to the top and allow the HR to go over LT.  12k sounds like a lot, but it's the equivalent of someone that lives at sea-level climbing from 4k ft up to 7k ft since I live at 5k feet.  You feel it, but it's not un-doable.

Blew another rear tube tonight. Luckily it was just as I was getting home. I guess I'll be taking my tire to the bike shop to have them look at it. I haven't found anything sharp on it but I think they can help me figure out what is going on with the flats.

I did get some good hill repeats in before my tire blew though.

I like my Cyclops Fluid 2 trainer.  Quiet and relatively easy on tires if I set it right.  I have rollers and they are probably a better training tool for bike handling, but I wrecked and still haven't mastered them yet.  The spinnerval series are for me a method of putting in the proper intensity to trainer rides instead of falling into the habit of mind numbing pedaling without purpose.

I'll be honest with you, I love his music. I do. I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".

Not to change the mood but what's everyone's take on increasing speed on the bike, in short and long distance?  Intensity?  Volume?  Intensity then Volume?

I'm a podcast nut, and one quote that hit me was, "If you ride your bike all the time at 18 miles per hour, you'll just get really goood at riding your bike 18 miles an hour."

It seems to be a direct hit against volume training, and tbh, the guys I know who are fast on the bike, got there on low volume, high frequency, and  high intensity workouts.  For example 12 miles a day 6 days a week at breakneck pace all the time.  The guy I know who do traditional tri workouts aren't as fast, but then again my window into the tri world is really small.

So I finally got in to see my doctor about my foot pain that has been bugging me for the past two weeks.

The good news is that it isn't plantar fasciitis. Yay!

The bad news is that he thinks it might be a stress fracture which would put my half Ironman in jeopardy. They took x-rays today and I have another appointment (this time with a podiatrist) to find out the results on Friday afternoon. So if you can think good thoughts for me for it not to be a stress fracture I'd appreciate it. In the meantime I'll be doing a lot of aqua jogging!
